@ nanoprobe Do you know if the app_info will work with ATI if I change the <file_name> to wcg_hcc1_img_6.56_windows_intelx86__ati_hcc1 ? I got a quad with a low end HD6750 with a bad response mouse lag. I tried to run the main screen with the onboard Intel graphic - It helps a lot with video lag but do nothing for the mouse pointer If you change everything that says nvidia or CUDA to ati it should work. Let me know and if it doesn't, I should have something else that will.

Tried it & it runs a bit better with the app_info but..
all my cpu tasks were gone after restarting BM & got this when updating: 2012/10/13 14:52:28 PM World Community Grid Reporting 2 completed tasks, not requesting new tasks 2012/10/13 14:52:33 PM World Community Grid Scheduler request completed 2012/10/13 14:52:33 PM World Community Grid Message from server: This project doesn't support computers of type anonymous |

nanoprobe,
----------------------------------------How did you find those command line switches? After you change them and restart BOINC, how can you confirm they're being used? I'm not seeing any change in responsiveness, after changing the values, which is why I'm thinking they're not being used. I looked in Task Manager, on the Processes tab, in the Command Line column, but didn't see them being used? I tried moving the <cmdline> line to be OUTSIDE the <coproc> tag, since that's what I see done here and here ... but when I did that, all my tasks errored out immediately with things like: 10/13/2012 9:38:31 AM | World Community Grid | [sched_op] Reason: Unrecoverable error for task X0900069130976200605232111_1 ( - exit code 293 (0x125)) ... so, maybe those command line arguments aren't supported at all? Final question: If a user sets up this custom app_info for the WCG HCC GPU tasks, does that mean BOINC will not be able to run other WCG task types without additional configuration inside this file? I just don't see a problem (regarding the lag). simply go to Tools/computing preferences/processer usage and uncheck "while computer is in use" and "Use GPU while computer is in use" . In the "only after the computer has been idle for" put in 1 minute, or even .1 minutes. As soon as you touch the mouse or keyboard, you've got 100% of your machine back.
----------------------------------------There is also an exclusive application tab. I added my media player (VLC) and X-plane in to this. So now even when watching a bluray, or flying a F22 at 60 FPS, I'm good. Just got to remember to close the app when I'm done. ![]() |

I want the CPUs to be crunching while I work. I want the GPUs to be crunching while I work. I don't want "100% of my machine back". I want this WCG GPU project to be able to work on GPU tasks, while I work, without any interference (screen lag), so that it works efficiently like my other GPU projects Poem@Home and GPUGrid.Net. Your proposals are not solutions that fit our scenarios. [Edit 4 times, last edit by JacobKlein at Oct 13, 2012 1:59:19 PM] |

Overnight in 13 hours, I got 75,831 points, mostly from HCC GPU. That's a daily rate of over 139,000 points, a results rate I have never before seen. The new HCC GPU app seems to be producing the goods. Apart from minor lags, I have seen no problems at all. Well done, team.....I hope the additional research effort contributes to more effective tools for treating cancer.

Tried it & it runs a bit better with the app_info but.. Try editing the file with note pad and change the target frequency to 30 and gpu polling mode to 8 Here are some general rules. --gpu-target-frequency 60 (default 30; higher number = smaller chunks) --gpu-polling-mode 16 (default 1; ms between polling for results from gpu) --process-priority 1 (default 2 (normal), 0 (lowest) ... 4 (highest); process prio in windows) Higher target frequency means the data is getting split into more chunks and in between the chunks the gpu can do something else like refreshing your screen, but in summary more time is spend on moving data to/from gpu. Lower polling mode leads to a more busy cpu on some systems (like mine) but faster loading of the gpu with the next chunk of data. The trick is to find the best combination of target frequency and polling mode for your system. Different size WUs can make that even more tricky. all my cpu tasks were gone after restarting BM & got this when updating: 2012/10/13 14:52:28 PM World Community Grid Reporting 2 completed tasks, not requesting new tasks 2012/10/13 14:52:33 PM World Community Grid Scheduler request completed 2012/10/13 14:52:33 PM World Community Grid Message from server: This project doesn't support computers of type anonymous I was afraid of that. Sorry. You may only be able to run GPU tasks. Is your card ATI or Nvidia

Try changing the parameters of the file as per your second link and see if it helps. I'll look for more solutions. As for your final question, I don't know. Yeah, but.. umm, how would we have any idea what parameters would work for the wcg_hcc1_img_6.56_windows_intelx86__nvidia_hcc1 executable? You seem to be having us "try this and try that". I appreciate the help, but couldn't you actually try your solutions first? I mean, I see you pretty much copy/pasted a bunch of MilkyWay stuff, including a parameter list with tags in the wrong spot!, but now I'm thinking that parameter list includes parameters that are specific to the MilkyWay executable. I'm so frustrated with this issue. We shouldn't have to guess at a solution. In the end, I think this issue is something IBM will have to investigate and fix. I'm forced to babysit the suspending and resuming of these tasks manually, and it sure is a pain. |

I agree with Dave A. While I am pleased WCG has finally released the long awaited GPU app, for my farm this is a very inefficient use of both GPU's and CPU's. I'm sure WCG will make some improvements over time but the "work-arounds" are a bit comical at this point. I pitty the non-tech, casual cruncher trying to sort it. Best of luck folks but I will keep my GPUs at MW and Einstein for now.
