The new GPU WU's turn my 6 Core GTX560ti powered machine to the screen refresh rate of a ZX81 (with just the 1K of RAM) I am unable to position my cursor correctly while a HCC GPU WU is running. Windows Media Player is unwatchable
----------------------------------------I was hoping this had been resolved before making this public Unfortunately not I am going to have to keep crunching with my GPU on GPUGrid there my PC operation is totally unaffected utilising the spare resources of my PC while letting me get on and achieve what I need to achieve while the grid picks up the crumbs nvidia_hcc1's are the first WU's to break this unwritten contract we have with the science guys. Not the red letter day for grid computing I had hoped for with the launch of this project Dave ![]() |

Refer to FAQ's and reset your client to only process WCG GPU tasks to run when the client is *idle*, which is BOINC world wide default. FAQs you find here: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/help/viewTopic.do?shortName=GPU
Few have the lag, many have the right hardware to not see the lag even when crunching GPU tasks during use. |

Sek is it possible to just pause the GPU crunching on idle and keep the rest of the WCG WU's running as previously
----------------------------------------Or do I have to abandon all crunching while my PC is busy Will watching a DVD on Media Centre count as active or idle? Dave ![]() |

p.s there's nothing wrong with the hardware

Hi SekeRob,
----------------------------------------I'm afraid David has a point. Why is it that other projects can use the GPU and not affect the user, while HCC creates so much trouble? I don't think that's the case for me, the last batch of BETAs that I've ran worked just fine (didn't get the chance to run any of the live WUs, but will do as soon as I get home tonight, even so, it's the same version of the app so don't expect anything to be different), no lag or frames on my PC, but still, we shouldn't dismiss it as "hardware related" and I don't even think that applies, since the GTX560Ti is not such a bad piece of graphics card. Sorry to butt in, but I know how nasty this can be since I've seen it on the v6.55 version of the app. Cheers! Edit: added the huuuge comment between parenthesis Knowledge is limited. yes, you can pause only GPU -- in the Activity tab

Hi SekeRob, I'm afraid David has a point. Why is it that other projects can use the GPU and not affect the user, while HCC creates so much trouble? Try running Folding@home (the long-time masters of GPU crunching) on an Nvidia card, especially the GTX 560/TI and see what happens. And Folding is optimized for CUDA too. It depends on the science being done, and what parts of the GPU it utilizes. The AMD cards work best on HCC, since they are better at OpenCL. There is no point complaining, unless you like to complain that your PC runs slowly when running games but not when running YouTube. |

Hi Jim,
----------------------------------------I think you are off by a long shot. I actually have an HD6870 1GB GDDR5 and I experienced lag/frames while running v6.55 not while playing games, not while running YouTube or some BD movie, but while simple clicking around the forum (indeed, everyone knows how much stress that puts on the GPU ). However, like I said, the problem was apparently fixed by the time v6.56 came out and that is exactly why I'm now asking why it can't be fixed for the Nvidia cards too.I don't like complaining and I resent stating that my PC runs slowly. It's true that I haven't run Folding@home, yet, as you can see from my signature, I run both SETI@Home and SETI@Home Beta, on GPU only and I never had such issues. Cheers! Knowledge is limited. p.s there's nothing wrong with the hardware ![]() Try leaving a full cpu unused by Boinc and see if that helps. ![]() ![]() |

Edit: added the huuuge comment between parenthesis There's 3 types of GPU processing: CUDA, which only runs on NVidia, Stream [IIRC] which is an ATI exclusive, and OpenCL. I see no point being made, as OpenCL was the choice made to facilitate an all platforms participation, and that code base is still under development. Anyone who bothers reading [sorry but that's the reality], will have noticed one of the posts yesterday that displays a screenshot of the project selections in BOINC. A quick check shows that when positioning the cursor on GPUGrid it's only running NVidia, speak CUDA.... so there you have it... *not* all platform. The decision to not go for CUDA was made a long time ago. |
