I happen to stroll over to grid.org just to look around and compare it to WCG. I must say that I was shocked: They have a lot more users (10x) than WCG and two projects running currently. But their website looks like it was designed by my 5 year old sister.
I was reading their Forum posts and it seems as if their are losing steam. There seem to be two reasons for that: 1) Their Cancer project currently does not have any new (useful) data to be crunched and 2) their HPF project (the same we are running here on WCG) continuously fails to record the results that users return to the server. If this ever happened to me here I would get really really mad. Is there any way WCG could start an initiative to either convince grid.org users to switch or partner with grid.org so they use our stuff (which seems to work just fine). After all we are better looking ![]() Give me your thoughts. |

I would have thought the best way to try to recruit the members would be to post a letter to their forum saying pretty much the sort of things that you have said here and saying that if anyone still wants to help out in folding/crunching, why don't they come over to WCG. They could even start their own team so they can keep any camaraderie that they already have.

Are there any members here who used to be over at grid.org ?
Another idea is to contact any members who are openly disgruntled and have some sort of contact info (www, Yahoo, AIM, MSN etc). |

I am not sure what is happening over at grid.org, but we should remember that IBM has a lot more resources that can be made available to the World Community Grid than are available to United Devices. IBM is leasing the software that we are running in the WCG from United Devices and United Devices is listed among the partners of the WCG. Perhaps IBM chose to start up the World Community Grid because of concerns such as you are stating. |

Would you like me to start a thread here promoting my U.D team??? ![]() Oh...and the mods at grid would only delete such a post anyway....at least they would if you posted links to this project....that is grid policy ![]() |

from someone that's got nearly 400k points racked up over at grid.org, and is pretty active in the forums...
i would tend to feel that wcg looks and feels so much similar, from the client point of view, to grid.org. (seriously...no offense intended, but it looks like someone here basically just grabbed the grid.org program, which was in place years before wcg even existed, and changed the colors...) if i were to permanently switch my focus on which project i have my computers working on, due to the troubles grid.org is having, i would tend to sway away from wcg because it is so similar, and for all i know could wind up with the same troubles. right now i'm here basically getting a feel for things, though i seem to be leaning towards focusing more of my efforts towards folding@home. re: posting at grid.org forums. they're not like the forums here, where you have to download the client and register, etc, just to even post(i'd recommend changing that, btw...). anyone can register for the forums, anyone can post. only thing i'd say is they don't tend to take to people coming and posting, telling people to switch projects, very lightly. no offense or anything intended, just a view from someone on the other side of the fence. ![]() (hits preview button and sees new post...hi vaio...lol) |

(seriously...no offense intended, but it looks like someone here basically just grabbed the grid.org program, which was in place years before wcg even existed, and changed the colors...) That was very valuable input. I liked that response. But here is my view on this. Yes grid.org existed way before WCG and they also used the software before. But the truth of the matter is that grid.org and WCG both got their software from United Devices. grid.org didn't come up with it. I also somewhat support the notion that WCG was born out of the need and desperation that areose from the troubles at grid.org. WCG changed the colors....thats the obvious part. But WCG is also put together by IBM. They are the difference between grid.org and WCG. They make sure that what happens on grid.org will never happen here. They sell a commercial version of the grid technology through their Global Services devisions. So we can be sure that it works and doesn't just lose data from time to time. The WCG is grid.com with better colors and a heavy weight on its side. |
