gretchch,
----------------------------------------I am sorry to hear your mom is having such a tough time, my prayers to your mom and you. My mom had cancer so I know how difficult this can be on everyone. Is your mom's cancer limited to just one lobe of the thyroid? Has there been any mention of distant mets? Does she have the resources to get a second opinion from a cancer center such as MD Anderson or Sloan Kettering? This is not a good way to start the new year but there is always hope and prayer does work.

She's already had her entire thyroid removed, and been through the radioactive iodine treatment once. A few weeks after that treatment, she was diagnosed with her first recurrence (that's how we know the RAI doesn't work for her) and had all the lymph nodes on the left side of her neck removed. Just this week she had the diagnosis of the second recurrence. We are currently looking for a doctor to give a second opinion -- I have a friend who is an oncology nurse, and she has sent out an email to the docs she knows to get some names. No distant metastasis found as of yet, so we're still a bit hopeful, but my mom is getting REALLY tired of the surgery... this will be the 4th in 6 months.

My experience with kidney cancer surgeries reinforces that your mom is right to be tired of ongoing surgery.
----------------------------------------The pain is unrelenting and the painkillers cause problems like constipation and addiction. The surgery creates new problems which one must learn to live with. As you get older life does not get any easier. A cure for all cancers would be a great gift to all of mankind. There is a tremendous amount of research going on and I am hopeful that someone will find the secret soon.

Thanks for the suggestions of where to go for a second opinion. She is thinking about Sloan Kettering, since she will have to return to New York state for her surgery (she lives in Florida during the winter).

I went to MD Anderson but would have no reservations going to Sloan Kettering.
----------------------------------------They are the top 2 cancer hospitals in the US and possibly the world. http://health.usnews.com/best-hospitals/rankings/cancer They are both teaching hospitals so they use the latest up to date treatments. They both have a lot of experience with treating cancer. If I was looking for a cancer doctor i would pick someone that does a procedure 1-2 times a week over a doctor that does a procedure 1-2 times a month/year. MD Anderson treated me very well. They came to my hotel the night before my appointment to get blood and urine samples. They reviewed the case using a team of specialists in various fields, to decide on what treatment course to follow. My doctor was Head of the Urology Dept. at MD Anderson and a professor at The University of Texas. My doctor had an interest in organ conservation, which was lucky for me as my local Urologist would have removed both kidneys and put me on dialysis. I lost about 25% of each kidney so i was left with more than enough to avoid dialysis. You need at least 1/2 of 1 kidney to survive w/o dialysis. I was treated better at that hospital than at most resorts. I was very impressed and would recommend it to anyone. I am sure that Sloan Kettering is just as good.

Last minute update in the results for our new crunchers.
----------------------------------------grumpygrampy joined 10/09/2011 5 badges (1 Silver) breewillhelp 10/12/2011 2 badges (1 Silver) Two-Boxers 10/22/2011 2 badges Burno 10/26/2011 4 badges houal 11/25/2011 1 badge That is a total of 14 Bronze and 2 Silver earned by 5 new crunchers. I was concerned that we had a new member join and never return any results. On another forum thread I read that a large team (about 8,000) had over a thousand join and never return any results. So I am no longer concerned. However, I wish msgdlsmith the best and wish he would join us on the forum as I would like to know more about his story; he was given 4 hours to live and is still surviving.

Still working for 4 Sapphire badges.
----------------------------------------I need 2,117 days (5.8 years) of run time. It looks like mid May 2012 is possible. Run time/project is about 333 days so early February is possible to go Emerald on my SNURK signature globe. It may take until February 2013 to get a Sapphire globe.

Daylight Savings Time in 2012 is March 11
Only 2 months and 10 days to go. I don't like Daylight Savings---the extra hours of sunlight burns the grass. ![]() |

The citizens of Arizona agree.
----------------------------------------The solution is to do what they do, grow rocks, not grass. On another note, I see that dl1000v has left the team. Thanks for crunching with us. We appreciate visitors very much. We now have 8 contributing team members and one non responsive member. The 5 new crunchers, and the 3 seasoned survivors have done very well in 2011, we have 60 years of run time. If we can find 5-8 new members in 2012 that would be great. I am still working on 1 promise to join. If you know anyone that might be interested send them an invitation to join WCG. if you have a PC collecting dust power it up and download BOINC. This would be a great way to get kids interested in science and research, so if you know any gamers see if they might be interested.
