Two days ago, I received "imminent hard drive failure" for the solid state drive on my main crunching box, so it has been off most of the time since then, while I wait for a replacement to arrive. Unfortunately, my production is down significantly. Hopefully I will get it early next week.

I have a 60 GB Samsung SSD 830 Series drive.
----------------------------------------The instructions stated specifically not to use it as a cache as each location has a limited number of operations. Who would have thought that you could wear out a solid state device? On the good side they don't have to be defragged as the drive itself takes care of that. After looking around I found that Intel makes a 10 GB SSD specifically for use as a cache and it will not wear out.

I'm not using the drive for cache -- it has my Linux OS and programs loaded on it, and that's about it. All "data" directories, including the "projects" and "slots" directories for BOINC, are on a RAID 5 array of 3 regular magnetic drives.

Surprising that it failed in that configuration.
----------------------------------------On my i7 the SSD is transparent; data is read/written to the SSD and later copied to the hard drive. Samsung SSD Magician is loaded and between it and Intel Rapid Storage Technology it works well and I don't mess with it.
