Re: New Beta starting Aug 23, 2011

We have released another version of BETA. application verstion 6.16 has a few bug fixes.

Thanks,
-Uplinger

Got a few 6.616s.

Running OK on Win XP Intel duo, suspends quickly.
Ditto on Dotsch-UX Ubuntu Linux Intel duo laptop.

On Win2000 AMD 2.4 hogs CPU with Boinc manager and Task manager only updating every 20 seconds or so.
Suspend takes a while (until next 20sec slot?).

Re: New Beta starting Aug 23, 2011

All wcg_beta13_vina_6.16_windows_intelx86 WUs running OK here - XP-32 SP3 and Win7-x64 SP1.

On the XP-32 machine, I tested suspending & resuming these beta WUs, with LAIM both on and off. All behaved as expected.
BOINC 6.2.19, Intel QX9650 in motherboard with G33 chipset.
I did not shut down the BOINC service or reboot the machine during the tests.

[Edit]: Update: I just discovered that during my suspend/resume testing, an FAAH WU crashed during startup with a "no heartbeat from client" timeout error. The BOINCmgr log shows that at the time of the hangup, I had intentionally or otherwise started several new FAAH WUs within a few seconds, which is probably what triggered the problem. It may or may not be related to the fact that several beta WUs were running or being suspended at the time. (Task: faah24195_ZINC02058798_x2IEN_wtHIV_03_0)

Re: New Beta starting Aug 23, 2011

I did not shut down the BOINC service or reboot the machine during the tests.

I have tested suspending WUs (after waiting for new individual checkpoints to be started), then shut down the service and finally rebooted on all my machines due to basic housekeeping today.

I was lucky enough to be speaking to the author of BoincTasks today and I offered to make a video of what I perceived to be a bug. Just as I was about to start making it, I saw the first of these betas coming in so naturally deployed my 'beta-net' in order to grab 1 beta per each available thread.

This is the maximum amount of betas that will be sent, isn't it?

I'm seeing similar behavior on a AMD 2.9 and Win7. The WU does not seem to respect the "use at most xx%" setting. I had two WUs running at the same time on a dual core and processor was solid at 100% even with "at most" set to 75%. The suspend took about 3 seconds. It's too hot here for me to run this particular system at 100%, so I'll be running these one at a time.

Re: New Beta starting Aug 23, 2011

So far I have 4 running on my Quad running Vista 64bit, 1 on same machine under an XP Home VM, 1 on same machine Ubuntu 10.04 virtual machine, and hopefully once I get a chance also running Snow Leopard on a third virtual machine. Trying to see if there are any problems running this many at once on one piece of hardware.

Re: New Beta starting Aug 23, 2011

Just picked up 4 on my i7 (SMT on) running Win7 64bit. No problem with suspending/resuming - happens immediately. The tasks also respect the throttle command from BOINC if activated. I'm never using this option but just tried it because of the experiences from other users. Everything looks nice and smooth so far biggrin

Re: New Beta starting Aug 23, 2011

I guess this is going to be a "mixed" review...

I got 2 betas running in the same set-up that I reported video hiccoughs in with the first beta batch. My initial impression was that I got less severe and less frequent stuttering -- so that I would have thought most people wouldn't seriously complain about it. But to really keep an eye on task stop/starts, memory usage, page faults etc. I started the task manager too. When I did experience video stutters I couldn't correlate them to any obvious events in the task manager. But then at one point the whole display stopped updating for perhaps 10 or 20 seconds and that threw me so hard I wasn't looking closely enough to see if there were any correlations or not. Maybe it's just that WinXP is poor at some aspects of memory or task management, 'cos it certainly seemed to be a system-wide fault. I definitely got the impression that WCG contributed to it, but I couldn't really say it caused it. I don't have enough tools (or expertise) to go any deeper.

Just my 2p. Do with it what you will.
