Re: UK

Ahhhh........ no, I just assumed they were betas since:
a) I've never seen a beta before so don't know what to look for
b) the machines which have received them aren't signed up for HCC, but are signed up for beta testing.
There are 150 or so stacked up now and they are certainly running through OK.

And yes, they're non-beta, as I can now see from looking at the message log. Running through nicely at about 3.25 - 3.5 minutes per WU.

Re: UK

Each Graphics Card I have is on the "Excluded" list, so I won't GPU'ing any time soon, I can't afford to replace 1, let alone all 4, their not cheap (I would have thought my newest systems card would be okay atleast, seeing as I upgraded from the card it originally had, but no!) crying angry

I passed 72000 results for the team though.

Re: UK

Two member of the UK team, previously Inactive in 2012, found the 'ON' switch yesterday and stirred into life: biggrin
sgdale 0:003:10:52:03
DerekJGB 0:000:03:36:15

Time alone will tell if this is sustained activity. Although sgdale appears to have logged results this morning. smile

Re: UK

If you allow it to use your GPU..... do you get double the runtime?

on my quad core, 4 still show as running (as expected) but two of them have (running 1.00 CPUs + 1.00 ATI GPUs).

Re: UK

As expected the UK team has moved ahead of Wisconsin (if only by 2 days) to #85 in the RunTime rankings. Ahead of us now lie PlanetRomeo.com - Gays Against Aids 44 days and Team Norway 77 days. smile

Re: UK

Afternoon all,

Good to see a couple of members restarting their crunching and hopefully others will follow.

And I did manage to pass my first 100 days worth of RT for the team with the last update.

Crikey, only 3 or so minutes for a GPU HCC unit? Is that all they really take to complete shock

Re: UK

Nice to see steady progress in team rankings and memberhsip :-)

My HCC GPU units are averaging a little under 4 minutes on my i7 hex machine (none of my other machines will run them). Points awarded are the same as for a 'normal' HCC WU (which take 6-7 hours on one of my machines!). I don't think run-time is doubled, so far as I can see: it just shows 0.06 or 0.07 against each for runtime in 'results status', which is roughly 4 minutes.

Re: UK

There's been a request for someone to write a FAQ for HCC GPU, til then it's a case of piecing together bits and pieces from various threads, and I'm no expert so with that important caveat:

I think Mike is right. Total runtime per device will be largely unaffected, but Points and Results will increase substantiallly possibly by as much as a factor of 10.

I'm hampered because I haven't received any GPU WUs yet - an unforseen consequence of having my cache set at 10 days to ensure I snagged enough HCMD WUs to make Ruby. Hopefully the lunchtime update will confirm that I've crunched sufficient (Completed+P/V) that I can abort the rest and return to normal.

The UK team stats for the 7 days to 9th Oct show that HCC accounted for 25.21% RT 26.56% Pts and 61.99% Res. The GPU WUs arrived too late in the UTC day (10 Oct) to have any discernible impact. (They're grouped together under HCC with CPU WUs so its not going to be easy).

A factor of way more than 10 for results I'd suggest, unless it's a *very* fast cpu! Points-wise it'll be pro rata to results it seems :-)

The key thing is that it's only this factor for *one thread* on one core, unless you have more than one GPU of course. Also, in badge-chasing terms, this ties up one hyperthread, meaning that in my case I've 'lost' one day per day of HPF2 run-time. Having seen the incremental points increase from the midday update, however, I think I can live with that!

Edit: half a day of 1 x cpu + 1 x gpu was approximately 25K points earned !!! (Unless I'm misinterpreting something, and I don't think I am...)

Re: UK

Factor of 10 is maybe a bit excessive. I've browsed some more and *8 seems to be quoted for recent, high-level machines. Truth is, only time - several days - will tell.

knreed WCG tech has posted:
As far as the impact of GPU on the project, here is data on success results returned in the past 2 hours:
%_results num_results platform
37% 18768 CPU
36% 17877 ATI GPU
27% 13420 NVIDIA GPU

If we estimate 24 hours of results for CPU we get ~220,000 which is the same pace that we were previously completing results for the project.

If we estimate 24 hours of results for GPU we get ~375,000.

That is a VERY nice increase in work accomplished for the project.

Another comment which might be of interest:

i7-2600 AMD 6950
Power consumption went from 200W to 270W and turned my machine into a space heater. That 70W boosted throughput 2.4x.
