We see a whole lot of new crunchers visiting our Forums today which is nice:
hl4545581 has no country listed, no SNURK sign and no posts so far - joined just recently so I'll not be too pushy ![]() Dorfbewohner is a blank page in all respects also. Do you live in a German village? philipp bauer has posted three times, but lists no country, but it would be interesting to know - it could be Anglo-saxon, French, German ... anything. Please tell us ![]() huangyizhe could be from China. Are you? ![]() Henk Haneveld who doesn't post seems not to have noticed I guessed he comes from the Netherlands. Do you? You could put that in your Forum Profile even if you don't want to post ![]() |

Firstly, my apologies for a tardy reply, circumstances beyond my control.
In reply to your question, I do attend, not as often as I would like (us pensioners have have be more frugal). ![]() ![]() The 1980's were really formative in shaping the grounds that football and other sports that we have today. In 1985 there was a fire at the Bradford City stadium, killing 35 people. This was followed by the horrors of the Heysal Stadium and in 1989 the Hillsborough disaster. This led to the government of the day to introduce no smoking at all sporting venues, complete reconstruction of stadiums. If you had visited some of these grounds, such as Sincil Bank (Lincoln) Roots Hall (Southend) or the Northampton Football and County Cricket ground, you would have known how dire watching watching footy (Soccer) could be. Onto a lighter point, you are right about the southern counties and vinification and viticulture. The soil and climate conditions are much the same as Northern France. There are vineyards but as yet still to produce 1st class wine (to my knowledge) indeed there is a vineyard about 10 miles from where I now live. One thing they have found in the same area as our countries main hops (beer production) growers there is a very acceptable cider producer (Biddenden). My point about the Bohr / Heisenberg meeting is that it is likely that neither of them wanted all the issues raised. On one side, Bohr certainly helped in the escape of many Jewish people that arrived in Stockholm from Copenhagen, Certainly Heisenberg could not let it be known that he had told Bohr of what was happening in Hitler's Germany. Perhaps it was for the best that the conversation happened and further comment would would not be useful I do not know and perhaps that secret is best kept secret. |

No apology needed, Leppins_lane
----------------------------------------![]() No other place can muster a fan culture as the British – even as they try their best. Don't pensioners get a free or discounted public transportation fare any more? Yes, I remember they started renovating the stadiums big time after all the tragic events. They put up those bars that should prevent all the spectators tumbling all the way from the top to the bottom toppling everyone on their way, and possibly make them suffocate. I remember English football so well and with great joy. Every Saturday afternoon Danish TV showed a match. We always hoped for Leeds, Liverpool, Manchester United (and – sorry – to a lesser degree Sheffield Wednesday, Arsenal, or Chelsea). All too often we were served Wolverhampton, Derby, or Stoke. This is an instance of Protestant thinking. You shouldn’t have too much fun! We used to celebrate big time watching the Cup Final with porter, chips, chocolates, anything … and I remember many of the players, even Kenny Hibbitt of Wolverhampton who was not all that bad even as he was a Wolves player (and missed his teeth). Little Billy Bremner, Tony Sheridan, and one very elegant player with the first name of Alan who may have played with Liverpool or rather Leeds – don’t get me going – Gordon Banks, Ray Clemence with his eagle stare that almost made you afraid, not to forget Peter Schmeichel. You just taught me two new words: 'vinification and viticulture'. In fact I meant crooked roadsides flowering with rhododendrons, whitethorns, lilacs and lots of other plants in mid May. The wine part came as a surprise to me on a transatlantic flight with British Airways. They offered wine. British Wine! I must have repeated that in a highly incredulous voice, because the steward practically cringed. Actually, it was quite good. We also grow grapes and make wine in Denmark now; I even think they are into cider as well. Pear as well as apple. Yes, I would think Niels Bohr could have helped Jewish people he may have known professionally to escape to Sweden. Ironically, the best help the Jewish community received came from Georg Duckwitz. His leak of the Germans’ plans led to a hasty arrangement by the Jewish community and their Danish friends and helpers to arrange for the escape of the vast majority of the Danish Jews. ![]() Added: I wouldn't be able to fall asleep tonight if I didn't find out ![]() Allan (double 'l')Clarke, Leeds United ![]() ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Jan 3, 2018 6:08:41 PM] |

You show a picture of Allan Clarke. During the 1978 - 79 campaign he became very concerned with the way the players were not playing. He got in touch with manager of the local colliery and arranged that his players were taken to the coalface. Whilst they having a shower at the pit head he blasted the players by saying "These men pay your wages, show some respect to them when you are playing a game of football. The players got the message and improved sufficiently to gain promotion to the second division. The manager at Hilssborough (The Wednesday) was a certain Jack Charlton.. He had given his word that he would leave once he had gained promotion to the then Second Division.
The early 70's Leeds team had, Lorimer, Hunter, Clarke, Charlton, Bremner and Stiles, some of the hardest men in football. Nearly all regulars at the FA's disciplinary committee. I do have a bus pass which will allow me to travel by bus to Sheffield, it would take 2 days, there is no provision for free rail travel. |

European morning check of 'Recently active' - now with music!
----------------------------------------Hang on! BladeD, you made my day before it began! ![]() javif is from Spain. Not only Spain, but Granada with Alhambra which I wanted to see ever since I first heard the mysterious name in a geography lesson in school, and which have been so lucky to visit. Excellent, javif PMH_UK top marks! - it's a good day today shaping up here ... kaniri@siberia gives a hint in his name, but is that true? Nothing hardwired to support it. It would probably be cold there as well. Darkmatter.NI is definitely from the UK, but is able to put a smoke screen on everything by disguising as a Knight Who Says NI. To branjo's regret the NI part is, however, as I - if I may say so - ![]() Crystal Pellet steadfastly has no country except for the Netherlands in his SNURK sign Spameater we know your diet, but you are a continued mystery as to location Apis Tintinnambulator - ah, we spoke, you are an Englishman for all the her good reasons and traditions ![]() Leppins_lane originally from Leppins Lane but transplanted to the Garden of England, thank you for the anecdote about Allan Clarke. Overnight my subconscious was at work and presented me with the three 'S'es I always know I ought to remember: Shearer, Sutton and Tony Sheringham who was a little too old to be put on the team and participate in that game, but who was shifted in as a last defense, and within minutes he scored! Do you remember? He laughed and laughed, and everybody laughed. Was is against Germany in the European Championship? So, it would take you 2 days by free fare bus to reach Sheffield Wednesday ![]() Not exactly Greyhound, eh? Do you go by car or pay British Rail? EDIT: 'alway' changed into the more intelligible 'always' [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Jan 4, 2018 10:08:54 AM] |

Oh I wish things were simple or even economic, then I could plan more visits to the club I committed my support. I have done further digging into match price tickets to add to transport cost, (family up north would always give me shelter). As things stand it will have to be me seeing the team when they are in London, although there are two stadiums I will never attend (least said, soonest mended).

tsk, tsk, tsk, how sad, Leppins_lane
![]() Are the home matches better than the away ones? More local fans? Meeting old friends? I suppose it would not help to switch loyalties to another team … which of course also would be out of town at every second match … and which of course nobody does. Do you know any who did? Even in your team's blackest hour! That's when they need you the most ![]() No, stay away from stadiums you don't trust ![]() I’m sure you have thought this through thoroughly and from each and every angle … sigh Teddy Sheringham, do you have any clue as to what match I’m thinking of – it was an international one, and I’m pretty sure he wore this black jersey and this could very well be his personal victory celebration. |

Now that is very impressing, and I would like to be able to use that facility
![]() I tried to register. All went well until I came to a field called CPID. What is the heck CPID? I never, never get past all those border controls without problems ![]() Never! And it makes me nervous ![]() Very, very nervous. All that bureaucracy! I tend to take it personally.
