As you can see from my SNURK sig I am from the UK, more specifically England. I have based my User Name on where the city I was born in and a clue to a sporting affiation. I now live in the south of the country, looking out my rear window I can see the flight path into one airfield, looking out of the front I can see gliders from another airfield. Both of these airfields played a major role in the 'Battle of Britain.

Thank you, Leppins_lane. In your own cryptic, British way you give answers that form riddles
----------------------------------------![]() Others are probably smarter ![]() But now we have Google Maps ![]() and I find the place where a plaque ought to be installed in commemoration of your birth to the north-north-west of Sheffield, the city where they made scissors and knives they taught me in school, the counterpart of Essen, Germany, and Eskilstuna, Sweden. Where you are now, is somewhat more problematic. There were numerous air fields in service during Bomber Harry's command. When I visited Ted, then captain of the Edwardians in 2011, I paid a visit on my way north to East Kirkby (with the -by ending indicating a certain Viking influence) in Lincolnshire- not that far from your place of birth - where they had a very good display. You may have seen it. I have to guess you live there. I know of no other place ![]() A few days ago I listened to an interview with the Danish author of 'Britain’s Victory – Denmark’s Freedom' a new book by Mikkel Plannthin which seem to descibe in detail the Danish participation in the allied air forces. If you are interested in these things, I'm sure you can find it at your library. I made a reservation for it myself (forgot to reserve some time to read it at the same time). ![]() ADDED: The signature melody for that radio programme was 'Coming in on a Wing and Prayer' [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Dec 31, 2017 11:27:35 AM] |

little_mermaid, well done in locating my city, a little bit of history would tell you that on 15th April 1989 some 96 supporters of Liverpool Football Club died at the beginning of an FA Cup semi-final against Nottingham Forest. This saddened me for too many reasons, not least because when I go to watch Sheffield Wednesday I always will sit in the Leppins Lane end of the ground and not on the Kop End, it gives me the title of being a 'Lep_Ender'.
----------------------------------------Your comments about my location now, I have to say that I am much further south than the airfields of Lincolnshire / Nottinghamshire used by Bomber Command led by Arthur Harris. I refer to the Fighter Command Battle of Britain July - late September 1940 which took place over the fields of Kent, Surrey, Middlesex and Essex. I feel I must pay my respect to your countryman Niels Bohr as a scientist and great humanitarian. His meeting with Werner Heisenberg had many implications for the Jewish population still living in Copenhagen. Please find attached article about this very secret meeting. http://www.nww2m.com/2011/09/the-mysterious-m...hr-and-werner-heisenberg/ [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Dec 31, 2017 1:04:12 PM] |

Thank you for your kind comments and your interesting information, Leppins_lane
![]() I'm sorry, I ought being able recall the the news of the tragedy at Hillsborough Stadium in 1989. It must have been in the news, of course, but I lived in the USA at the time where football does not mean football. I know it's a poor excuse. 96 fans killed must have been mentioned, of course. I remember watching the tragedy at Heysel Stadion, Brussels, unfold on TV, though. These disasters are gruesome. Fathers go with their sons to have a good time - and then ![]() Yes, I'm aware that stadium seating is of extreme importance. I had the good luck to be at a match on St. Andrew's in Birmingham, and I just sat down at a pretty good vacant seat soon to be told, that 'this is my seat; I have been sitting there for xx years!' So, I moved, of course. You must be a pretty dedicated Sheffield Wednesday fan to take the trip to Sheffield. Do you watch all their matches out and home? Yes, there is a difference between the Battle of Britain and the time after the arrival of the US forces. I didn't know you had the former in mind. I just had to make my guess at the one I know ![]() So you are in that part of England that looks as if it is one big garden in mid May ... really lovely. It was a complicated conversation Heisenberg and Bohr had. They were clearly scientists and not all that trained in intelligence gathering, body language or psychology. It says: "After the war, the two men were never able to reconcile the details of the conversation. They were unable to agree upon basic facts and what was precisely each said and heard, much less gain a clear understanding of the context, meaning, and implications each meant to convey." I can understand that, because it has probably not been in either's nature to play that game. And, indeed, that is what the article suggests in the end of the article. Masters of slinking they were not. |

If cowtipperbs decides one day to add a country to his Forum Profile, we'll all know. [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Jan 1, 2018 11:05:13 PM] |
