For those newcomers here who may be wondering about if their computer can handle CEP. YES there is a warning about older computers etc, but honestly, most all computers except the oldest most pathetic (can you say packard bell anyone) should be able to handle CEP with no problem.
I have a 7 ish year old laptop running CEP with no problems. If it starts clugging a bit just set your priority down about ten percent and it will find the best of both worlds. Do remember the main 'theme' of these programs is to use your computer in it's spare time. If you have one with a bit of processing power you can run it 24/7 in real time, if you got an older one, just set it to actually just use it when YOU are not. Give it a try, I did and it works fine, and every little bit helps. This is a really good cause too and these are great people to work with. Aaron |

You need to reach out beyond this forum with this appeal. This is just preaching to the choir. You need to post up this information on Facebook and ask all of the "Like" people to Share the post, and to reach out to their colleagues and friends.

I have mitrichr. I just posted it here as well so that those who may be thinking about the project and possibly checked out the forum to see if they could hear what others are saying could see that they can run it as well on their machines. Granted we all believe it is a good project and well worth the time but many might not be aware how computer 'flexible' it really is, because of the warning on the sign up page which makes it sound like do not even think about it or else.

@ascholten - its not if older computers can handle CEP2 its on the older machines sometimes you run into problems if you get 2 running at the same time... on my 2 machines that are double processor (yep they are older) so because of that fact they have set it to standard only run on 1 processor but cause of how BOINC works... it causes it to only have 1 CEP-2 work unit on the machine at a time and that is actually much less than single processor...
----------------------------------------depending on how my computers are doing i have 3-4 computers with 5-7 processors working at a time one of my double processors can actually handle 2 CEP-2's at the same time but since the other double processors can not i just do the single processor thing. as far as getting others to run it there are a lot of people paranoid about running things like BOINC so it is hard to convince people to run them. if i can convince people to run boinc i can get them to do wcg... and then to do cep2 but most of them will not go to multiple processor on cep2 because it actually dose slow them down noticeable or in there opinion noticeable so I get who i can for as long as i can and hopefully we will get these project crunched. I also hope the research here is going fast enough I have heard rumors that its going to slow but I figure in about 30-40 days i will get emerald and then in about 1 year i should get sapphire... I wish i could go faster without computer problems but its the speed i can go Again I love the fact the scientists communicate as much as they do here ![]() |

Roberto, Xavier, and Alan are currently on a trip to ‘Quitel 2011’, the XXXVII Congress of Theoretical Chemists of Latin Expression, which is held in Riviera Maya, Mexico. The presentations on the Clean Energy Project were very well received.

I also hope like nasher that this project is going as fast as the scientists hoped.
----------------------------------------But that is a question - what was the expectation? How quick should it run in comparison to how it really does? So we all know if we have to buy some more computers... ![]() ![]() |

So we all know if we have to buy some more computers... If you live in the Northern hemisphere (or the Southern, in six months) go ahead and buy new 'puters and do like I do: Rather than run a 1500 watt electric heater as supplementary heat, I'm using a couple of fans to circulate air and 4 systems running 28 lightly-overclocked cores (for now; I could throw more cores online, but I'll wait until it gets colder) running CEP2 tasks.![]() Seemed like a good trade-off, to me: Spend a little money on the electricity to run CEP2, but scavenge the waste heat for my physical comfort - a "twofer". Of course the ideal setup would use the waste heat to maintain ideal temperatures in a brewery...that would be a "threefer". ![]() |

Well throw a few of those computers into a closet with a few vats of your favorite ale brewing and it can be a threefer. If it wasn't so messy and you could figure out a way to cook a burger or two on the heat sinks, we could have a good ole fourfer :D
I have some bearded dragons as pets. Between the heat lamps and under gravel heaters they can suck up a lot of energy. I have their cage setup so it's over two of my computers running CEP, and there is plastic around the sides, to channel the heat from the computers right up into the bottom of their glass cages / sand and it keeps them warm that way and overall, given what it cost to run a few 75 watt to 100 watt heat bulb bulb 24/7 a few heat pads / strips etc I figure I am actually breaking even or even saving a few bucks each month. Plus the computers are doing work here. Its a big plus all around. Maybe I should get some hamsters and hook a generator to their little treadmill to offset the costs. oh i better shut up while I am ahead. Aaron |
