Re: Research Log: Updates from the Harvard Team

We saw a nice uptick in crunching time over the last few days. Great - keep the results coming biggrin .

Re: Research Log: Updates from the Harvard Team

Our friends at IBM were so nice to add a ‘call-to-arms’ to their recent member eMail to boost CEP2 participation. Thank you!

Here is the text:
Help The Clean Energy Project

The Clean Energy Project from Harvard University needs your help! This project is conducting valuable research into materials that can improve efficiency and lower the cost of using solar power.

Many volunteers are contributing to the project and it is running smoothly on their computers. However, due to the higher system requirements of this project, a small percent of computers do not have the capacity to run this project. In order to meet our commitment of minimal impact on your computer, this project is not automatically selected when people join World Community Grid. However, our caution has resulted in The Clean Energy Project progressing slower than desired.

Please consider reviewing the system requirements <http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/help/viewTo...ecture_recap_20111202> for this project and if your computer is capable, please add this worthy project by going to your My Projects <http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/ms/viewMyPr...ecture_recap_20111202> page and adding it to your list of projects.

Re: Research Log: Updates from the Harvard Team

My colleague who is a mathematician figured out that you probably have around 3700-3800 users or hosts, he did not tell me which.

He wrote, "... You asked how many people on WCG are running CEP2. A rough estimate is 3760, derived as follows:

Yesterday (Mon. 12/5/2011), CEP2 consumed about 4% of the resources of WCG, as measured either by credits or run time. (There were 8 projects active on WCG yesterday, so an equal share would have been 12.5%)

The number of active users on WCG (from BOINC Stats) is 94,007. And 4% of 94,007 is 3760...."

I think he must have measured hosts, but I am no mathematician.

I took a look at WCG's Requirements,
https://secure.worldcommunitygrid.org/help/viewTopic.do?shortName=minimumreq.

I think that at least half of the 97000 WCG crunchers would have equipment that could handle at least one thread on this project.

Re: Research Log: Updates from the Harvard Team

I just checked, my colleague did mean users, not hosts. Hey, that's why we have mathematicians, they know how to do that stuff.

Re: Research Log: Updates from the Harvard Team

BTW, Mr. or Ms. CE Scientist, you only have badges from this project, which is quite understandable. But, I know you guys are humorists from your FB cartoons, you should have, like, Gold Oakleaf Clusters on your badges. That would be so OMG cool!!

Re: Research Log: Updates from the Harvard Team

But, so did the post on that jerk writer in the New York Times who wrote up Foldit without mentioning rosetta@home or HPF2 orWCG or BOINC . I know he had a word count and very little space; but he only needed a line or two. The print is small.

Re: Research Log: Updates from the Harvard Team

Hi Richard,
I don't think we get special Gold-Oakleaf-Clusters-treatment on the official forum - but we'll see whether we can do some counterfeiting on our facebook log biggrin .
Best wishes
Your Harvard CEP team
