Want to very seriously pimp and improve the Linux Lucid file browser called Naulitus? When so, follow the instructions from the below.
----------------------------------------What is Nautilus Elementary And How to Install Nautilus Elementary in Ubuntu Lucid, Karmic Read more: http://www.techdrivein.com/2010/05/what-is-na...how-to.html#ixzz0p2DaxSKH After, you get additional features such as sub-headed sections in the left side bar grouping personal folders and favorites, various disk resources [devices] and all that's on the (W)LAN under [network]. Also see the top posts bar on right bottom for more great stuff. It's not quite windows user friendly yet [too much stuff needs done via the command line] but it's closing in to ![]()

Did I ever confez what the issue was that stabilized the WIFI, but still not totally perfect? In Firefox, many pages refused to show and the refresh icon just spinning along... for flash and the FIFA World Cup watching in latest Opera 10.60. Hitting stop would often show part of the page being loaded in the background. Type about:config in the address bar, ok and find the network.dns.disableIPv6 value and change that to true, default false. Things suddenly loaded. Of course the wifi itself need to have IPv6 set to ignore.
----------------------------------------(for flash and the FIFA World Cup watching in latest Opera 10.60... Mozilla did something to Firefox flash, but what I've not figured out yet... the streams don't start)

A topic that came up in the CEP2 performance was some having set up Linux with NTFS, where mine is in ext4. Easy checking on filesystem in Lucid Lynx is with Systemmonitor in the Filesystem tab. See that the Windows partition is marked as fuseblk, mounted after each boot, so I can listen to ripped music from the NTFS drive... which may explain part of the time losses during use.
----------------------------------------Still not thinking that Linux at LL 10.04.0 is a smooth operator. 10.04.1 is coming soon according https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+milestone/ubuntu-10.04.1. There was in last update a bunch of wifi backporting and still not 100%. The wifi craps out when under longer high loads. Firefox continues to be unresponsive even after latest auto-update to 3.6.7. Comparatively, Opera 10.6 performs on this platform superbly, but missing some of the must-have add-ons that make writing and archiving easy such as zotero and scribefire. Former says they're unable to replicate the functionality in Opera, so will continue to revisit the issue with FFX. Beta 4 is out, so who knows. It renders blazing fast and crisp. On Lucid Lynx, there's a nice review by Ars-Technica also touching on Maverick Meerkat. http://arstechnica.com/open-source/reviews/20...-reviews-ubuntu-1004.ars/. One Greg Kroah Hartman reports there's a bunch of kernel refreshes coming, 2.6.32 to be maintained for several years to come i.e. the LTS. Can't wait... so much to learn about the pitfalls to avoid on this platform... who'd thought NTFS could cause that much performance burden... no me. linux noob out.

So you thought that Linux is a smooth operator... well know, not so and found that I can make it cause the infamous "zero status / restart / if this happens often, reset the project" ladida when searching for files, particularly when using the indexless search function of the nautilus file explorer. Lost probably 16 crunching hours over 4 cores when seek, not knowing it would destroy progress on various tasks, the worst on CEP2 because the checkpoints are so far apart. NOW, i find that "Recoll", using the xapian indexing db gives superbly fast results [catfish proofed to be a dog also causing the zero statuses in BOINC to appear] ... Just need to know: How can I make it search files on a none native filing system such as my documents on the Windows/NTFS partition. Any expert in the vicinity. Not able to get past / which is essentially only the Linux partition.
----------------------------------------Many thanks in advance PS: Quickly looked with Google and found this: http://www.tuxradar.com/content/best-linux-desktop-search-tools which also happens to mention 'Recoll', so it seems I've got a favored tool by the 'experts' ;-)

So simple it proofed, the indexing within Recoll of Windows partitions. Appeared that the none-native store resources had entries in /media, for instance the C:/My documents was in /Media/HDD. Swiftly added to the table of directories to index and instant supply of lists of files that meet the search criteria. Evil thought as just got into scripting, adding mnt commands to scripts, then auto-start. How about adding those remote data stores, so having an immediate view of any redundant copies. Recoll is nice because it only indexes when taking the menu option. The continuous indexing in Windows proofed quite a CPU hogger, the worst part being that somehow BOINC on Linux is caused to crawl all 4 processes on the quad, when on Windows it only seemed to affect the core where the normal priority process is running. Did I miss something here? Can that be controlled somehow?
----------------------------------------Today also figured out how to add a repository to the PPA (Personal Package Archive) for auto-updating and low/behold Recoll/Xapian were updated upon finding new point releases. I'm no Linux adept, still not, but I'll give it a chance, whilst it is way way to hot to work outside, just 37% humidity... need a sombrero I think... a big one. Maybe they sell them at the Mexican restaurant at the Riviera. Hats to protect against the sun are not very popular here. Tanning is an illness... some hormones that cause kind of withdrawal symptoms it seems when missing a day.

The interesting adventure for today is how to access an ext4 Linux file system (default for Karmic and Lucid Lynx) from Windows 7. The first lines in the article found on the most well known search machine: http://www.soluvas.com/read-browse-explore-op...ilesystem-from-windows-7/ comes across as ominous:
----------------------------------------The latest Ubuntu Karmic Koala 9.10 uses ext4 filesystem by default, and previous versions use ext3 and ext2 filesystems. There are several good options to read and write ext2 filesystems from Windows systems, but ext3 or ext4 support is an entirely different scenario. Now it's off to read the rest, as I'm in W7 to do some work that I don't have the software for to do in Linux (and forgot to copy over files to the NTFS partition before booting over :() edit: And bingo, setting 'Read Only' as per the advise. Though definitely a ext4 fs, it shows in the screenshot as ext3. I'm okay with that, for now :D ![]() PS: Can you see that Linux swap file partition... yes we can!

Short but enormously sweet. The teeth grinding slowness in Lucid Lynx particularly in Firefox (3.6) and visiting sites such as PhotoBucket which has a lot of scripts running it was remedied by 2 steps, the second not really necessary, but what the heck:
----------------------------------------1. Visit System > Administration > Hardware Drivers. Check if version 'Recommended' is selected. (it was not on mine). After, blazing saddles. 2. Got the latest ported NVidia 256.35 drivers with help of Webupt8, a gem of a website, having this page up: http://www.webupd8.org/2010/06/how-to-install-nvidia-25635-display.html . After, howling on blazing saddles. And to celebrate the new found speeddemon, put GnoMenu http://www.webupd8.org/2010/07/probably-best-5-gnomenu-themes.htmlon integrating well with GLX-Dock (Cairo-Dock). Now there is a search box in the Menu so just typing a few letters will find instantly what you want to launch, and it starts to look like Windows 7... a real glossy desktop and speedy, howling on blazing saddles (Bet you, lots of CPU cycles are returned now to the crunching cause).

I'm running the 64bit ubuntu 10.04 at work and could not get the boinc client to work. So what I did was ran boincview using wine and configured my client with that. For some reason that build just crashes when you click the "attach to projects" button. This is my all time favorite linux cartoon... http://ubergeek.tv/article.php?pid=54 That was good----- |
