The first time I ever used the Upgrade instead of a clean install of Ubuntu was when I went from 9.10 to 10.04 5 months ago. I don't think the process itself went any faster than a complete clean install, but it was a time-saver not to have to reinstall any of my specialized software or restore my files afterward. I had done a complete backup before the Upgrade. I didn't need it because everything went smoothly, but I would certainly agree in recommending it!
----------------------------------------What is your opinion, Sekerob: Is the easy availability of BOINC 6.10.58 from Ubuntu 10.10 a big advantage? I'm running BOINC 6.10.17 now and am perfectly happy with it, and I'm reading about problems with 6.10.58. I'm not so sure I want to go to 6.10.58 any time soon. ![]() |

Don't know, the command I found is different to the standard update-manager -d and tested it, basically doing same as update-manager --devel-release . The article was explicit to say this would not work with Ubuntu's before 10.04 but some diggin' brings out that it even can get to work from H.Heron 8.04 LTS http://linuxers.org/book/export/html/793 listing out several upgrade paths. My Lucid is anyway already half way Mavericked, so don't expect it to produce any problems when I'm ready to run it.... going to wait a little longer for such things as:
----------------------------------------Ubuntu Font Will Be Default In 10.10 Date: 9/30/2010 Posted by Andrew A recent update in Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat (it probably didn't reach the users yet) sets the Ubuntu font as the default Application, Window title, and Desktop font for Ubuntu 10.10: ubuntu-artwork (53.7) maverick; urgency=low * debian/gconf-defaults - Set default Application, Window title, and Desktop fonts to "Ubuntu" The default font size will be set to 11 (instead of 10). Today went digging again on why my WiFi would sometimes not reconnect automatically causing BOINC to log many failed transfer attempts and found a few module lines to add, set the BSSID/Router MAC and unplugged and plugged the dongle many times to find if stable... it seems, the spinner on the panel bar revolves and now connects many times faster at that then before. Basically had 14 hours of 4 cores completed work sitting in the transfer window of BOINC, so that cleared fast including 4 CEP2 results... will be good to regain a few spots on the ranking ladder. Stick with 6.10.17 or set the new "while processor usage..." to zero to disable in 6.10.58 if there are no user responsiveness impacts (function is getting a few fixes in 6.12). The option is now also available on the website device profile with a rather more intelligent text than Berkeley came up with. edit: spellin' ;-)

Tried Byobo, a tabbed terminal window for a while, then CliCompanion came along with a command pick list window on top. Get it from http://okiebuntu.homelinux.com/okwiki/clicompanion or http://www.ubuntugeek.com/clicompanion-easy-w...mmand-line-in-ubuntu.html . You can define your own commands with syntax and add them to the pick list.

Pulling hair... WiFi died again and finally stumbled on the word that was missing in my searches "Lucid Lynx wireless dropping connection" and low / behold, this seems to be a global pain in the posteriors for years under Linux. The latest fix:
----------------------------------------sudo iwconfig wlan0 power off Where my wifi connection is wlan0 and iwconfig is another wireless configuation tool, that everyjoe explains: http://everyjoe.com/technology/howto-use-iwconfig/ It was already present on my Lucid Lynx system. The power off is when the power management is disabled :D edit: type in man iwconfig and the manual is listed. Also what seems to be expansive on this tool is this manual: http://www.linuxhomenetworking.com/wiki/index...eless-tools_Configuration covering different distros. Enjoy (if it is an issue for you)

One way to get the WiFi to drop was also to let the BOINCTasks window open from a remote host in the tasks or messages view... well so far things keep on running... scary... just touched the thick oak desk ;P

The final straw... now a crontab job is run to restart network-manager.
----------------------------------------And whilst WCG is battling GPFS [was that involved in the big outage?], I'm taking on to play with Btrfs http://www.linux.com/learn/tutorials/371623-w...ct-get-started-with-btrfs the B-tree file system. It's going to be ultra stable and lowest in overhead.

... and still the WIFI is running without me having to apply manual therapy. :D
----------------------------------------One member comments on the kernel and Lucid updating this. Well I installed the LTS 64 bit 10.04 which became 10.04.1 but it held on to that 2.6.32 kernel, albeit the minor increased meantime from 2.6.32.21 to 2.6.32.25 (not 44 as I wrote before). How to see which kernel you've got visit this link: http://www.liberiangeek.net/2010/08/view-curr...-ubuntu-10-04-lucid-lynx/ You can set in the Synaptic Repository preferences which updates to get and if wanting to stick to the Long Term Support release... which I've left as it came. ![]()

As those who've read through this thread from the top know, I early on adopted the Nautilus Elementary enhancements which make the file browser much nicer and elegant to operate, plus other bits got added such as the integrated Nautilus Terminal (v 0.7). In search of more grails, saw an article on adding commands to the context menu and stumbled on Nautilus Actions Configurations Tool. Sure enough it was in the Ubuntu Software Centre, but could not locate where it put it in the menu... more searching and more stumbling to find this great tutorial how to create your own command. See
----------------------------------------http://techthrob.com/2010/07/07/adding-a-secu...us-file-manager-in-linux/ demonstrating right on topic, "Shred" and after adding a few more eradicate parms and restarting nautilus, it was there with it's own assigned icon. The target files got nicely overwritten, never to be seen again other than an endless series of 00000000. :O))))))) PS: The tool sits in the system > preferences menu
