Got the new Elementary theme 2.0 http://www.webupd8.org/2010/10/install-elementary-gtk-theme-20-with.html which looks very neat, integrates very well with Nautilus Elementary, then went to look what on earth the acronym GIT in Linux world means... first off, it appears not much different from what it is in British slang :P

Ha, gotcha, a new header/kernel release in the queue 2.6.32.25... build 45 ... now I know why that number stuck
---------------------------------------- Clocking in at a total of 217MB and after application using 43KB more than before ... and still the WIFI is running without me having to apply manual therapy. :D One member comments on the kernel and Lucid updating this. Well I installed the LTS 64 bit 10.04 which became 10.04.1 but it held on to that 2.6.32 kernel, albeit the minor increased meantime from 2.6.32.21 to 2.6.32.25 (not 44 as I wrote before). How to see which kernel you've got visit this link: http://www.liberiangeek.net/2010/08/view-curr...-ubuntu-10-04-lucid-lynx/ You can set in the Synaptic Repository preferences which updates to get and if wanting to stick to the Long Term Support release... which I've left as it came. ![]()

I had to try Linux once again. There has always been some problem with it, so I have had to stay with Windows. I had some old copy of openSUSE 10.3 and it worked fine, until Boinc wanted some missing libraries or something like that
---------------------------------------- Then I downloaded newer version of openSUSE, but the old linux wasn't able to burn it on DVD with my sata burner. Only CDs, it said.. The next try was with Ubuntu 10.04. Everything fine, until... it wasn't able to use my SATA HDD, some well known RAID-problem, which I surprisingly confronted also with 9.10.. Oh well. As an old friend of microsoft, I've had to find instructions to every possible problem there is, but the boinc is now finally running. Let's see how long this happiness will last ![]()

So you're running BOINC on OpenSUSE xx now?... Excellent.
----------------------------------------Done with playing the swap space game and having gained virtually nothing, found an article on GParted Partition Editor, installed it from the Ubuntu Software Centre used that to issue the swapon command. Contemplating to move the actual BOINC data_dir into a RAM disk and back it up periodically. With UPS, the uptime and stability (after nearly 6 months plodding) is now at a point that it's worth investigating and testing. edit: Was just looking in "Disk Utility" that recides in the System > Administration menu and it so happened my eye fell on the "create > RAID Array". Something must be working there.

So you're running BOINC on OpenSUSE xx now?... Excellent. Ubuntu 10.04.1 LTS now installed and running. I tried disc burning with this distro too, but no go. So before I get a DVD copy of the latest OpenSUSE, I have to keep on practicing with Ubuntu.

An extensive test by Tom's Hardware store of Maverick Meerkat.
----------------------------------------http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/ubuntu-10-maverick-meerkat-linux,2774.html The low down is... No reason to upgrade from 10.04.1 Lucid Lynx.

After, got rid of the Docky bar component and switched back to Cairo-dock which is really the same, but am used to. The Macbuntu icons on the menus are keepers, to my monetary taste. Now for serious matters... 5 years of benchmarking... the comparison to Windows Vista/W7 is... wow. http://cityblogger.com/archives/2010/11/03/up...ntu-hardware-requirements ![]()

Seems like linux has been one full week on my computer. First one or two days were challenging but with some help I received from google, everything started working out fine. I even cancelled my W7 order to get familiar with the linux as well. One of the most important things to lead to this decision was the finding of native support for RAW images. We'll see whether I learn to play blu-ray disc's with this thing...
---------------------------------------- There are still applications that run only in Windows, so it has to be installed in one point or another. But then again, Ubuntu loads much faster than my vista ever did and there are not many important things I can't do with ubuntu. Those OS X look-alikes and transparencies does look nice, but how much do they slow down your system? When I enabled Ubuntu's graphical effects, videos in internet television weren't smooth anymore. I mean, H.264 full screen scaling from the resolution of 640x360 shouldn't be a problem for a decent GPU. ![]()

Don't know how to do this with Docky, but I'm running the Cairo-dock as (No OpenGL). The rest of the bells does not seem to impact performance.
----------------------------------------As to Blue Ray... have had an after-market Philips in the box and so far played DVD without issue. Still to try to burn a BR disk... the purpose of installing one. These dual sided take 50GB on this burner.
