Here is an interesting article. http://venturebeat.com/2012/10/29/energy-depa...-of-nvidia-and-amd-chips/ It is about a 20 petaflop computer that is about to start. I quote from the article Nvidia says about 90 percent of the mathematical floating-point capability comes from its Tesla K20 graphics processing unit (GPU). The power efficiency of GPUs, which process lots of tasks in parallel, enables much more efficient computing to happen on Titan.

I find it very interesting that one member ABN@news is getting over 11,000 results a day with only 18 devices or about 600 results per device per hour. I have looked at his stats and they will be in the top 500 in results but not even in the top 5,000 in run time or points so they are not generating many points as well as run time. Another interesting point is the power required as I have calculated it to be under a watt per billion flops which is much lower than any home computer. I just wonder why WCG is not one of them. By the way I see that you are not in the top 5,000 in results yesterday so you must be either taking some time off or do not have many GPU's that work. I do not have one either. |

Here's an update on that multi-core Intel coprocessor - Phi/Knight's Corner.
----------------------------------------It's a really good article but long. Here are the guts that crunchers will probably be interested in - that and the fact that I still don't think that you can just drop one into a rig and run a normal app on it. It's being used on the new Stampede supercomputer right now and will probably be an HPC part for the foreseeable future. Overall though, Intel is promising 2X to 3X speedups, and only for software that lends itself to parallelization and vectorization. According to Joe Curley, Intel's director of marketing for the Data Center Group, that entails a relatively small portion of HPC applications. "But," he says, "customers who have those applications are motivated to find ways to get performance breakthroughs." Intel has to thread the needle here. It can't tout the Xeon Phi at the expense of its mainstream Xeon CPUs. The idea is to speed up applications or portions of applications that are out of reach for straight Xeons. But the chipmaker wants to sell you both products -- one for maximizing single-threaded codes, the other for highly parallel, vector-intensive ones. That's not really different from how NVIDIA has positioned its GPU accelerators relative to CPUs. NVIDIA, though, is more aggressive about pointing to big performance increases over CPU-only platforms, more on the order of 5X to 30X and beyond. For its new K20X Tesla part announced earlier today, the GPU-maker is claiming a 7X performance advantage over to a Sandy Bridge Xeon. Although that makes it seem like the GPU competition is three times faster than Knights Corner, the NVIDIA comparison is GPU-to-CPU, while Intel prefers to match its coprocessor against two Xeons. Nevertheless, NVIDIA's K20 does top Knights Corner in both raw performance and performance per watt. The 235 watt K20X offers 1.31 double precision teraflops, while the 225 watt 5110P, at 1.011 teraflops, delivers 300 gigaflops less. ----------------------------------------This pretty old news in terms of the actual concept, but soon it will be more than just vaporware. As far as I can tell, the real innovation is the 'via's' that connect the stacks vertically. There's not anything radically new about the chips in the stacks AFAIC tell although I've always wondered how they would handle cooling when they went 3D. Data rates will be 128 GB/s which is an order of magnitude faster than now and the tech should show up in cpu's in other semi's in a few years. The Gen1 demo, on display at SC12, was real silicon, and engineering samples for the Gen2 device are due out this summer. If all goes as planned, the Hybrid Memory Cube will be in full production at the end of this year or early 2014. In fact, contracts are already in place for the 2014 timeframe.
