"Stampede's" Comprehensive Capabilities to Bolster U.S. Open Science Computational Resources

Texas Advanced Computing Center's new supercomputer to enable traditional HPC, data-intensive computing, and scientific visualization for nation's scientists

The Texas Advanced Computing Center (TACC) at The University of Texas at Austin today announced that it will deploy and support a world-class supercomputer with comprehensive computing and visualization capabilities for the open science community, as part of the National Science Foundation's (NSF) "eXtreme Digital" (XD) program.
The new system, called Stampede, will be built by TACC in partnership with Dell and Intel to support for four years the nation's scientists in addressing the most challenging scientific and engineering problems. NSF is providing $27.5 million immediately and Stampede is expected to be up and running in January 2013. The estimated investment will be more than $50 million over four years; the Stampede project may be renewed in 2017, which would enable four additional years of open science research on a successor system.

Maryland Robotics Center

The Maryland Robotics Center is an interdisciplinary research center housed in the Institute for Systems Research within the A. James Clark School of Engineering. The mission of the center is to advance robotic systems, underlying component technologies, and applications of robotics through research and educational programs that are interdisciplinary in nature and based on a systems approach.
The center's research activities include all aspects of robotics including development of component technologies (e.g., sensors, actuators, structures, and communication), novel robotic platforms, and intelligence and autonomy for robotic systems. The center consists of faculty members spanning the following academic departments: Aerospace Engineering, Bioengineering, Biology, Civil and Environmental Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Kinesiology and Mechanical Engineering. Research projects in the center are supported by the major federal funding agencies including NSF, ARO, ARL, ONR, AFOSR, NIH, DARPA, NASA, and NIST....

Facebook: Are you sure you want to click on that?

Facebook is ramping up the fight against those annoying and potentially harmful scam attacks.
The site is teaming up with WebSense, a San Diego, California-based Internet security firm, to warn users when they're about to leave Facebook for a site that might be trying to steal their personal data.
Starting today, any link users click on Facebook will be checked against WebSense's database of sites that might contain malware or be used for "phishing" of the user's credit card or other personal information...

Re: Hardware - Technology - news

This is for Jean Pierre as he always brings a smile and a warm heart to this forum.
I spent some time down at AMD in Austin,TX..
OOOH the toys they have there!
That's all I can say for now, more later onbiggrin

So I dont know if you've seen or if its' real,
someone put what they are calling a FX-8150 on PASSMARK benchmarks.
It didnt' do too well, not even as well as the I7 2600K,
never mind their 6 core when it comes out in nov (hopefully).
I was REALLY hoping AMD would have something to put in the 4th
box I'm building. Tired of just intel (I'm a gamer I remember
AMD's great stuff)

Chief Scientist at NASA Langley Acknowledges Andrea Rossi E-cat http://nickelenergy.wordpress.com/2011/06/02/...edges-andrea-rossi-e-cat/

Today is the 1 megawatt test of the E-cat.

I am not a believer but I find it interesting to follow. I hope I am wrong.
