Wow. That new xeon is probably one of the absolute coolest new things I've seen in awhile.

It won't be fully x86 compatible.
----------------------------------------On page 657f in the "Knights Corner Instruction Set Reference Manual" which can be downloaded via a link in this forum post aimed at developers, Intel details which registers and instructions are not supported in the Knights Corner architecture. This includes any instructions operating on MMX, XMM and YMM registers, more or less all of the instruction set extensions introduced over the course of the last 17 years – namely MMX, any iteration of SSE and AVX. This includes most specialize floating point operations apparently. So anything that will run on these cards will require a recompile at the very least it seems. ![]() ![]() ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by twilyth at Jul 15, 2012 8:59:51 AM] |

Turn Android into free WiFi Hotspot (no root)
----------------------------------------FoxFi enables WiFi or Bluetooth Hotspot on your Android phone - no tether plan or rooting required! This is a new Android app with great reviews in Android Market. Bluetooth mode works for all phones. WiFi mode currently works on most Samsung/Motorola/LG phones and new HTC phones with Android 4.0 (HTC One etc). WiFi mode does NOT work on Motorola Droid 1, Motorola Triumph, Samsung Admire, LG Revolution or older HTC phones, use Bluetooth mode instead. Connect your tablets, computers or game console with WPA security. FoxFi usage is covered under your phone's existing data plan. http://foxfi.com/ |

Both my factory-standard Android phones (an ancient HTC Legend and a somewhat newer HTC Sensation) have the possibility for a WiFi Hotspot, out-of-the-box. I use it quite often.
----------------------------------------This app doesn't seem to add anything further, or do I miss some features which are added by this app? ![]() |

Funny, last year gave me dad the very cell phone featured in this technology for the elderly item: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/programmes/click_online/9745189.stm Huge letters on display, big buttons, and an alert button when the shell is closed, that is programmed to call the health care center and the kids when something is on. And now, texting at the oddest hours to the remotest places [high up the mountain]. The network will keep trying to get through until in reach.

What do you guys think of the intel NUC that's suppose to be coming out in October of this year. It will have a dual-core Intel i3 processor, 4GB of RAM, and a 40GB mSATA SS Drive and wifi built in. All this on a 4"X4" board. It's suppose to retail for about $400 US.
I thought it might be something I could just setup and leave crunching away on a shelf somewhere? More info: http://www.geek.com/articles/chips/intel-unve...mini-pc-for-400-20120611/ |

Looks petty good for 400 bucks. Not sure how the cooling would work out 24/7. I just picked up a laptop, Asus i5 (3rd gen) processor for 399 after rebate. Bit bigger but dual core w/hyperthreading. If the electric consumption is low, might just work. You could build your own quad core rig close to the same price too. Be bigger set up but more powerful.

Given that Intel is active at the supercomputer-market and at the consumer-market as well, I don't think IBM can continue to ignore the consumer-space any longer and still not worry over Intel's NUC -- which I see as having the potential to evolve into a MFCD (made-for-crunching-device) for consumers over time. Where is IBM's competitor to Intel's NUC? </comment> ; |

I run an i3 laptop and a dell mini netbook at home and worry about the laptops fan giving out as it's constantly roaring away, but so far so good.
I was thinking that a little desktop might be more of a "heavyduty" setup than a laptop but I guess it all depends on the quality of the parts going in. I too would like to see an IBM answer to the NUC, but doubt that they are interested in doing anything at the consumer level, although the nintendo wii succsessor has a power 7 chip in it, as far as I know. |
