Re: Not sure how much longer they will be able to keep crunching in the UK

Bacause that is the nature of religous war. You don't realize you're doomed until it's too late. You see a thread, read it, express an opinion and get your nose tweaked. Someone else comes along, reads it and tweaks back a little harder. Inevitably, the descent continues from there. Freedom of speech also comes with responsibility of speech. Not every post has to be responded to either. Some folks may enjoy a good banter back and forth. Fine, but with "religous" topics, the consequences of the banter are much more difficult to manage, something that hasn't gone well in the past. I've already violated my own self-imposed rule - if I'm not calm when I'm responding, I shouldn't be responding. All I know right now is that if I still feel this way tomorrow, there's a real good chance I'll walk away from WCG if not crunching all together.

Sad part is that if we humans did what we ought to, this whole topic would be a non-issue. For Christians, it's called being a good steward of God's creation. For non-believers, it's called living in harmony with nature. The outdoorsy types have the same idea applied to a much simpler situation - leave the campsite cleaner than you found it. Over-simplified - well, someone will say so whether it is or not. Plus, I'll probably get told the errors of my way soon enough. I'm bound to at least annoy at least someone saying this too simply because right now, I really don't care what others think about my opinion and I'm not all that concerned about the consequences since, given how I feel right now, this may well be the last post I ever make as a cruncher.

That seems a bit overreactive. confused However it is your time, machines, money and, to some extent, your vote. You might want to reconsider in the next few days. peace

I can't help thinking that there is a very bright psychology student busily working a PhD paper on "An Investigation Into the Mean Time to Insanity of the Avid Distributed Computing Participant". I will not cite any examples over the years here and other projects. sick I wonder what the newbies think when they first join the forum and blunder into these threads. confused Worrysome ...

They have tried to make this on par with religion--there is no reason to hold back on your views ,you are going to be attacked no matter what side of any subject you take. But it is everyone's moral duty to inform the ignorant masses. You have to remember not to take fools seriously and try to inform them.We all want to do what's right and that has nothing to do with crunching. If you have some kind of self imposed rule i think it quells the intellect--so keep on crunching and don't be afraid to give your opinion--we all can learn--Your friend Gerald

You're probably right on most counts DM. Idealism isn't limited to the young snots. Us old geezers dream of having lived a meaningful life, of leaving our kids a better world than what we got. I was on the road most all of yesterday. When I'm tired, I do tend to get cranky. Still, perhaps I do care too much. I mean after all, so what if a few more people die needlessly. So what that more folks suffer needlessly. So what if a new cure or new treatment comes a bit later. Geez, there's already over six billion of us. Who's going to miss a few hundred or a few thousand or even a few tens of thousands. Right? I mean, what's the odds of you or me ending up being one of them. It's not like we're going to win the lottery or to die of something the day before scientists announce they've found a cure. Pity the poor saps that do but hey, odds are it won't be us!

Do I care too much? Do I give a damn? Guilty as charged and proud of it!

So the mere fact that I believe I am right makes me right and gives me the right to expect and insist that others believe the same thing? I am all for rational, respectful, responsible debate. Where was that in the last thread? Are we really going to solve the issue and be able to proclaim to the world that a handful of untrained, ordinary folks have found the "Golden" truths that prove that climate change/global warming/whatever is/is not real? Now that we have a second thread on this, what has changed so significantly that we can all rest assured that it won't, or for that matter, already hasn't started down the same slippery slope? There are plenty of areas where I am undeniably part of the ignorant masses and there are plenty of people who think me a fool. So which am I really? Does my believing that I could lead a team of folks from diverse backgrounds who could get along and respect our differences and do the same with others make me part of the ignorant masses or a fool?

It's really not that urgent, Keith. Everything that is born also dies. We just try to improve the odds. The cosmos will not change much if you miss a stat's update. Take a crunch vacation. Take the kid to the park. Take the wife to dinner. Take a break. Then get back to work. biggrin

Astroturf--what is your point?Do you keep coming back just to irritate the good (sic) people in this thread?
While you obviously and vigorously support your rights to free speech, you seem quick to suppress that right for anyone who disagrees with you. Don't you are I both have the right to be disagreeable? Please when replying, use my correct name otherwise people reading your posts might think you were intending on insulting me, which is against Forum Policy.
Whether you know it or not a lot of good information was deleted in those threads.
As well as information that clearly violated Forum Policy, which was the reason the thread(s) were deleted.
if you cant contribute to the conversation why not ignore this part of the chat room? or start a conversation in another thread that you are passionate about
Sorry, I must have missed the post where you were appointed the moderator of this thread. I thought that I can read and post wherever and whenever I want as along as MY posts follow policy.
stop being negative
Me?? Negative?? By comparison?? I feel quite positive and upbeat right now. LOL

We call it "winter".

The 5.2 Belgiums are disappearing now in the southern hemisphere.
