Are the this year's monsoon floods due to global warming?

No single weather event can be attributed to climate change, but a warming climate does load the dice in favor of heavier extreme precipitation events. This occurs because more water vapor can evaporate into a warmer atmosphere, increasing the chances of record heavy downpours. In a study published in Science in 2006, Goswami et al. found that the level of heavy rainfall activity in the monsoon over India had more than doubled in the 50 years since the 1950s, leading to an increased disaster potential from heavy flooding. Moderate and weak rain events decreased over the past 50 years, leaving the total amount of rain deposited by the monsoon roughly constant. The authors commented, "These findings are in tune with model projections and some observations that indicate an increase in heavy rain events and a decrease in weak events under global warming scenarios." We should expect to see an increased number of disastrous monsoon floods in coming decades if the climate continues to warm as expected. Since the population continues to increase at a rapid rate in the region, death tolls from monsoon flooding disasters are likely to climb dramatically in coming decades.

Something is on with the Beaufort Gyre, in the meantime your mini multi year ice blob on the Canadian coast has drifted off, or melted, or raced over to the Siberian side.

All that blue is scheduled to be gone in a few weeks... probably before September 13.

marysdudy, one for you, from the annual climate report just out and published in that bulletin that the A.Watts's of this planet (he's a meteorologis) should be substribed too BAMS, lest he was kicked off the society... The Do it Your Self Diagnostics kit: All the Inconvenient Truth coming back at you: http://www.ncdc.noaa.gov/bams-state-of-the-climate/2009.php

PS, better go in hiding, the forests in outer Russia are on fire... there where allot of Chernobyl Fallout came down some 24 years ago. It's not the biggest boreal forest fire on record. Back in 1915 there was one that erased 1 million km square (440,000 square miles). Putin seemingly forced the Duma to sign the dismissal document of 70,000 firefighting captains (obviously not trained to do the job because like the roads and bridges in the US, not enough is spend on maintaining them properly... and those cost tax dollars... lots more than climate studies)

PS, the cows burb more than they flatulate, the story of changing the bacterial fermenting culture in cow stomachs to that of kangaroos several years old, though on quick peruse I see no mention here of that probably parallel run story.

Coincidences in life, the Autralian CSIRO (Commonwealth Scientific and Research Organization) also happened to have put out their update report on climate development. http://www.csiro.au/resources/State-of-the-Climate.html which interestingly shows 2 charts with temperature extremes grouped per decade:

No coincidence... ties in with many other signals, NOT the sun's cycle.
