Re: Not sure how much longer they will be able to keep crunching in the UK

hmmm, so sad and funny, on August 8 there is the 35th anniverasy of Broecker''s findings, the official coining of "Global Warming" and here we have a familiar name popping up from 1969 White House Staff, verbatim reproduced, text magnified for the visual impaired:

FOR JOHN EHRLICHMAN

As with so many of the more interesting environmental questions, we really don't have a very satisfactory measurement of the carbon dioxide problem. On the other hand, this very clearly is a problem, and, perhaps most particularly, is one that can seize the imagination of persons normally indifferent to projects of apocalyptic change.

The process is a simple one. Carbon dioxide in the atmosphere has the effect of a pane of glass in a greenhouse. The CO2 content is normally in a stable cycle, but recently man has begun to introduce instability through the burning of fossil fuels. At the turn of the century several persons raised the question whether this would change the temperature of the atmosphere. Over the years the hypothesis has been refined, and more evidence has come along to support it. it is now pretty clearly agreed that the CO2 content will rise 25% by 2000. this could increase the average temperature near the earth's surface by 7 degrees Fahrenheit. This in turn could raise the level of the sea by 10 feet. Good bye New York. Goodbye Washington, for that matter. We have no data on Seattle.

It is entirely possible that there will be countervailing effects. For example, an increase of dust in the atmosphere would tend to lower temperatures, and might offset the CO2 effect. Similarly, it is possible to conceive fairly mammoth man-made efforts to countervail the CO2. (E.g., stop burning fossil fuels.)

In any event, I would think this is a subject that the Administration ought to get involved wit. It is a natural for NATO. Perhaps the first order of business is to begin a worldwide monitoring system. At present, I believe only the United States is doing any serious monitoring, and we have only one or two stations.

Hugh Heffner knows a great deal about this, as does also the estimable Bob White, head of the U.S. Weather Bureau. (Teddy White's brother.)

Then Environmental Pollution Panel of the President's Science Advisory Committee reported at length on the subject in 1965. I attach their conclusions.

Daniel P. Moynihan

Referring back to reporting in 1965!

There's and other familiar name in there... give the people food and 'games', Hugh Heffner. A teasing piece of historical minutiae to add to the facts of (A)GCC... quick search on the right honorable 'Professor' Google's website and low and behold, it's printed on the internet, so it will be the: http://absolute-truths.com/?p=2758. Who'd thought that of Dick... he just climbed a few notches back on the esteem ladder, which step each can make out for her/himself.

Re: Not sure how much longer they will be able to keep crunching in the UK

114,000 hectares (500 square miles) of forest and peat (permafrost grounds below which loads of methane, CH4 are suspected), on fire in deeper Russia after extended drought and 130 year record heat. If the number is reliable, that is probably about the size of greater London turned to cinder.

oops, that's only 2 spots. others add up to another million hectares in various places... make that a good part of Greater Houston... what, 10,000 square miles?

The Climate is Normal... Really?

and then in 20 years we'll be having another Erin Brokovich movie... another responsible enterprise.

[OT]Sek have you heard of this documentary "Gasland"? I haven't seen it yet (saved in my Netflix queue for when it comes out on DVD). But very Erin Brokovich-esque about fracking...

In the film, Fox offers Hanger a bottle of water apparently polluted by a gas well tapping the Marcellus Shale and challenges him to drink it. Hanger uncomfortably declines. At the end of the interview, Hanger quickly takes off his microphone clip and walks out of the room.

Fine. That is a fact, now what is your opinion? If all you are going to post is facts then you can save your "breath" as I can read the news elsewhere (and do). If you are going to post something here, then add your opinion. The world doesn't need another news feed.

Re: Not sure how much longer they will be able to keep crunching in the UK

astrolab

Marysduby is just giving the counter argument to the claims made by Sek and Eso

These are all examples of weather just like the disaster unfolding in Pakistan

Hundreds have died in Peru on account of extreme cold weather and a state of emergency has been declared by the Peruvian Government.

The thing is this

Marysduby's claims are apparently not worthy of being in the thread whereas Eso's and Sek's are welcome

Is this not a self fulfilling bias one that all true believers in Man Made Global Warming need to be very aware of? The very same bias that struck at the heart of CRU, GISS and Penn State University in what has now become known as the Climategate Email Scandal?

Yes or No?

It's the yin and yang of a chaotic climate. There have always been and always will be weather related disasters inflicted on man. Are these events, extreme cold in Peru, extreme warmth in Russia, in any attributable way man's fault? No, such a suggestion is absurd. Think about it.

Sek you say it's a 130 year record. How hot was it 131 years ago in Russia? You know around about the time Karl Benz patented his first IC engine and before the Wright Brothers developed the powered Aeroplane?

Is the Climate normal? Absolutely

Almost unbelievably stable would be my way to describe it. With it's many built in checks and balances it copes real nicely with it's many varying inputs and outputs. We live on a really great planet you know.

I am very happy to be home in the unseasonable rain of Brussels - bliss

Dave
