The forecast here has been "it will start cooling tomorrow" for several days now. It hasn't. Upper 90's during the day, upper 60's overnight.
I've had to cut the Pentium D system back to 50% to keep it cool enough. The good news is the pool is just right. - D |

Just passing through to say hi to all my old crunching buddies. Wow -- great to hear from you! Graham Hood was in here earlier in the week as well. Sure would be nice to see the two of you back in here regularly!. Hope all is well with you. |

Still, humans can surprise you when they're forced to fight for survival. Sun Tzu says the way to have an army defeat an overwhelming opponent is to have them fight on the death ground - where their only chance to survive is to defeat the enemy. If humans ended war, famine and disease, you'd see us really settle Mars. Maybe you have hit on the answer, Keith. I am reminded of a scene from “The Hitchhiker Guide to the Galaxy” where all of the lawyers, accountants, philosophers, telephone sanitizers and the like were put on a space ship and sent out to colonize a planet. What a perfect solution to population control. Every so often we just take certain segments of the population, make them astronauts and send them off to colonize Mars. A perfect example of Sun Tzu’s death ground. However, it would bring us back dangerously close to the 1957 question, “Who is John Galt?” ![]() (My appologies in advance to all the lawyers, accountants, philosophers & telephone sanitizers ... I was just quoting someone else )For the record, Douglas Adams was a lifelong Humanist. |

One of my heroes died today ... Walter Cronkite. Perhaps the last of the news journalists before they became news personalities. ![]() Okay, now I'm starting to get scared. Ed McMahon, Farrah Fawcett, Michael Jackson, Walter Cronkite..... don't drink the water...I grew up on Walter Cronkite though my folks were more inclined to Huntley and Brinkley. Funny, I always remember him when I remember the space shots. He had two things you don't find in the media today - class and backbone. Either I'm showing my age or class has gone the way of chivalry and integrity. Sigh. I agree. And his reation to the Kennedy assignation. And when Johnson lost him he lost the war. He was all about factuality, honesty and integrity. However he was 92 ... he certainly beat the odds. Sadly his own profession will probably not give his life 1% of the coverage they just gave the narcissistic little pedophile. Now I am showing my age not to mention my bias. Good night.DM: We share bias and age I suspect. ![]() |

We hit 102 in the high desert at 11:00 this morning, and now it's 107. Three more hours of heating before it starts backing off...
----------------------------------------The one thing I love about this place - I was in my pool this morning at 1:30 and it was just pure awesome. If you can make it through the day, the nights are great! Looks like it will make it to 113F, though, so I'm shutting down my computers until tonight. Stay cool, everyone! ![]()

I'm actually getting a break as T-clouds are building in the high country and I may get some shade before long. The down side is there will cloud-to-ground lightening higher up and the resulting fires. 102F with 6% humidity. It should end up below 105. ![]() ![]() |

Personally I think Ayn Rand’s views were and are a steaming pile of dingo dung (can we say that here?) She once lectured at the college I attended and I suffered through it. But the story line of “Atlas Shrugged”, taken only a piece of fiction, does present some interesting questions. What does happen to the non-producers when the producers stop producing? I have to cut back on production due to electricity cost--the last few months my bill has been in the 480.00 range per month and haven't been working--if i get back to work i will crank up again--we got a 18 per cent raise in fuel cost
