Maybe you have hit on the answer, Keith. I am reminded of a scene from “The Hitchhiker Guide to the Galaxy” where all of the lawyers, accountants, philosophers, telephone sanitizers and the like were put on a space ship and sent out to colonize a planet. What a perfect solution to population control. Every so often we just take certain segments of the population, make them astronauts and send them off to colonize Mars. A perfect example of Sun Tzu’s death ground. However, it would bring us back dangerously close to the 1957 question, “Who is John Galt?” ![]() (My appologies in advance to all the lawyers, accountants, philosophers & telephone sanitizers ... I was just quoting someone else )if you remember the absurdly named trilogy (five books), you will remember that after the group (the Golgafrinchans) was sent off to space, the remaining people were killed by a disease that was spread through unsanitized telephone receivers. just a thought ![]() In Memory of Dave Bell |

I have an audio of the original BBC broadcast. Just another example of unintended consequences. Stop by more often. ![]() ![]() |

You guys are gonna get me started about the Flash Gordon serials fighting the evil Emperor Ming, the Gene Autry serials fighting all those crazy underground empires (amazing what you can find in a cave), the original black and white George Reeve Superman, the black and white Popeye cartoons (with the clapping doors). The new stuff was Mighty Mouse (with his girlfriend Pearl Pureheart), Rocky and Bullwinkle, Father Knows Best, etc. You know, college kids these days missed a lot. We old farts pre-date PCs, PDAs, and iTumes. Then there's cable TV, cell phones, foreign cars, freeways, the moon landings, Vietnam, the race riots, Civil Rights and desegregation, space travel, all the assasinations, knowing about hurricanes days in advance, microwaves, drive-thrus (we just had drive-ins), and for some of us, Korea and the atomic era. Then I think about my grandmother who knew life before TV, radio, theaters, electricity, indoor plumbing, cars, planes, tractors (the mule pulled the plow), telephones and enough to make us old farts feel downright young! What are today's college kids' grandkids going to miss out on? Don't start me on Flash Gordon!!! I had a very, very serious childhood crush on Dale Arden. I think the death of Walter Cronkite has taken me on a trip down memory lane. ![]() I remember when a station would sign off of the air for the night. It was a black and white picture of the flag waving in the wind with the national anthem playing in the background followed by white video noise. Now when a station signs off, they switch over to infomercials.... No pride anymore. Makes me sad.

Now to totally switch direction... I did not know that we had sent a Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter into orbit around the moon, but we apparently have and it has been taking pictures. Surprisingly these of the Apollo landing sites have not gotten any attention in the press that I have seen. I especially liked the astronaut footpath visible in the Apollo 14 photograph!

If they had taken time to report this, there would have been less time to report on the Jackson family. (Besides, only old fuddy-dudies would have taken time to read it) Neat site. |

Hey, I just cracked the top 11,000.. Congrat's Mike! O' Joy ... this is the last day of 106F. The next four days are forecast for 101F. I hope it is true. I started a couple of machines last night. Probably not a good decision as the house did not cool off as much overnight. Maybe I just miss the sound of all those fans ... Good morning MOT! ![]() ![]() |

You obviously get your news from the wrong place. If you have any interest at all in space exploration, I suggest you sign up for the Science@NASA newsletter . They usually send out something about once a week. I bet you also did not hear about LCROSS, the companion mission. It's going to impact the moon around the middle of October in an attempt to look for frozen water. In the "good old days" stuff like this used to get a decent amount of coverage on the evening news. To tie this back to Walter Cronkite, there hasn't been any network news anchor with any real interest in or understanding of space exploration since Cronkite retired. - D |
