Personally I think Ayn Rand’s views were and are a steaming pile of dingo dung (can we say that here?) She once lectured at the college I attended and I suffered through it. But the story line of “Atlas Shrugged”, taken only a piece of fiction, does present some interesting questions. What does happen to the non-producers when the producers stop producing? One of my heroes died today ... Walter Cronkite. Perhaps the last of the news journalists before they became news personalities. ![]() Thats what the Colt 45 is for--to keep the non producers out of your fridg. and on the street-- i liked Cronkite also---do you remember John Cameron Swayze hopscotching the world for headlines I thought he just did the Timex commercials? ![]() I can remember when i was a kid back in the olden days we would sit in front of the TV watching the test pattern hoping something would come on and i do remember Mr. Swayze on some news show and when he started he or maybe he said it at the end--hopscotching the world for headlines and i would wonder how in the world could he do that My parents bought their first TV in 1954 and got me this little rocking chair to watch it with them. I would watch the test patern because the first thing on in the morning (after the national anthem) was the Howdy Doody show. I would slowly rock my way to the TV until I was about 1 foot away from the screen. Mom would come along, grab the back of the chair and drag me back about 8 feet. Then the process would start all over until I was again a foot away. I still have the chair in the guest bedroom ... the cat likes to curl up there ... she is the only one who fits. Do you remember Tom Terrific? You could by a plastic sheet that stuck to the screen and a crayon. When Tom was in trouble he would ask his TV friends to draw a bridge so he could get over a river or a ladder to save someone in a burning build, airplane, car etc. ![]() ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by Dataman at Jul 19, 2009 2:14:35 AM] |

You guys are gonna get me started about the Flash Gordon serials fighting the evil Emperor Ming, the Gene Autry serials fighting all those crazy underground empires (amazing what you can find in a cave), the original black and white George Reeve Superman, the black and white Popeye cartoons (with the clapping doors). The new stuff was Mighty Mouse (with his girlfriend Pearl Pureheart), Rocky and Bullwinkle, Father Knows Best, etc.
----------------------------------------You know, college kids these days missed a lot. We old farts pre-date PCs, PDAs, and iTumes. Then there's cable TV, cell phones, foreign cars, freeways, the moon landings, Vietnam, the race riots, Civil Rights and desegregation, space travel, all the assasinations, knowing about hurricanes days in advance, microwaves, drive-thrus (we just had drive-ins), and for some of us, Korea and the atomic era. Then I think about my grandmother who knew life before TV, radio, theaters, electricity, indoor plumbing, cars, planes, tractors (the mule pulled the plow), telephones and enough to make us old farts feel downright young! What are today's college kids' grandkids going to miss out on? ---------------------------------------- [Edit 1 times, last edit by keithhenry at Jul 19, 2009 3:21:50 AM] |

What are today's college kids' grandkids going to miss out on? Don't start me on Flash Gordon!!! I had a very, very serious childhood crush on Dale Arden. I think the death of Walter Cronkite has taken me on a trip down memory lane. ![]() ![]() |
