Now to totally switch direction... I did not know that we had sent a Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter into orbit around the moon, but we apparently have and it has been taking pictures. Surprisingly these of the Apollo landing sites have not gotten any attention in the press that I have seen. I especially liked the astronaut footpath visible in the Apollo 14 photograph!

You obviously get your news from the wrong place. laughing laughing
If you have any interest at all in space exploration, I suggest you sign up for the Science@NASA newsletter . They usually send out something about once a week.

I bet you also did not hear about LCROSS, the companion mission. It's going to impact the moon around the middle of October in an attempt to look for frozen water.

In the "good old days" stuff like this used to get a decent amount of coverage on the evening news. To tie this back to Walter Cronkite, there hasn't been any network news anchor with any real interest in or understanding of space exploration since Cronkite retired.

Thanks -- I have subscribed. I also agree with you 100% on Walter Cronkite.

I remember reading about both when they launched. They hoped to get pictures back from the LRO of the Apollo 11 landing site in time for the anniversary of the landing. With all the recent deaths though, I'm sure it got well buried if not forgotten.

My disgust with the media is right there with you on this, RT!

[rant] While I agree 100%, we, “the lazy masses”, have brought it on ourselves. With technology that allows CNN, FoxNews, or MSNBC (take your pick) to monitor in real time who is tuning in and who is tuning out and who is buying what, I would expect nothing less. Media has always been about ratings and selling products that we don’t need (and probably don’t work). After all, just take this pill and the pounds of fat will drain off you while you live on a diet of pizza, beer and ice cream and the only exercise you ever get is going to the door to get the next pizza. If you just take this pill your <beep> will get so large that every woman will want you. Buy this cheap piece of crap and you will have abs of steel. Who buys this sh!t? “We” do! Who watches this sh!t, “We” do. Who supports this media? “We” do. Who protests it? Almost no one. When did an unreadable disclaimer at the bottom of the screen make the lies in the rest of the commercial acceptable? When did two cars colliding in an intersection become “breaking news” just because you can see a dead body? Just when did it become acceptable for some dweeb “investigative reporter” to get away with asking the mother of a child just gunned down, “Just how do you feel right now?” When did the misfortune of someone else become our source of entertainment? When you can spend your entire day watching and listening only to reports that support your beliefs, opinions and your voyeurism, why would a network want to provide anything else ... much less balance ... much less verified facts? Just as we get the politicians “we” deserve, “we” also get the media “we” deserve. [/rant]

Dang.... that sounds just like something I would have written. Those of us that refuse to watch/listen/read anything like that are so few as to not have any influence. sigh.

Seems we are stuck with Terril Owens, Michael Jackson, Paris Hilton and the list goes on.....and on.....and on sad Who would have thought of this. And how in the world was it even considered? In IOWA?

The above is depressing. Now I will get away and go take the wife to a movie and dinner. (It is the least I can do for 20 of the best years of my life (and the other 26 biggrin ))

I signed up too.. i've always been a big proponent of the space exploration and NASA programs.. I even watched the latest space shuttle mission launch while here at work... (on the internet).

Re: smilesmile Join "MyOnlineTeam" Today - Chapter 37 smilesmile

Who would have thought of this.

Hummmm ... I wonder if anyone considered donating the butter to a food bank? confused

As to sham products ... just who are the people who buy this stuff? Why do we allow them to vote? Heck, why do we allow them to breed. laughing biggrin laughing

This is a true story. When I was very young and we were living in San Diego there was a huge outbreak in house flies one summer. All over the city the topic of conversation was the flies. While reading a magazine (probably a comic book) I saw an ad for the "Arkansas Fly Killer". When used as directed, there was a "money back" guarantee that it would kill all flies (no picture of the product). Being a helpful young boy I took the ad to my dad and suggested we buy one (or several). He burst into laughter. It seems this scam had been around since he was a boy. The "Arkansas Fly Killer" consisted of two blocks of wood the size of a sugar cube. The instructions for use were, "Place the fly on one block of wood and strike it firmly with the other block of wood." Yes, if used as directed it would kill all flies although catching the fly and getting it to stay on the little block of wood does seem a bit problematic. laughing biggrin I learned a valuable lesson in advertising that day that I never forgot. wink
