Morning all, about 8-12 inches of snow now and still falling! No chance of going out.
I remember those days too Tony, difference is of course I remember the early 40s too, no problem keeping warm in those far off days, Most of London where I lived at that time was on fire thanks to those nice little Luftwaffe pilots. On reflection, I think I prefer the falling snow to the falling bombs! Stay indoors, Stay warm, and keep smiling! |

Ditto here Ted! I didn't expect it to still be snowing when I woke up this morning but it is, and obviously snowed all night long. It is at least 8" deep now, and I must confess it looks beautiful, just like a picture post card! The cars in the car park are quite unidentifiable but I can't believe anyone is going to try and go out anyway!
What is it about human nature that makes one quite happy to remain indoors normally, and then have this overwhelming desire to go out when one can't! I just need to go out by tomorrow as I have 2 birthday cards to post! Stay safe everyone and have a good day! |

Morning all
----------------------------------------No more snow but it remained below freezing all night so roads promise to be tricky. >>>>>>>>>>> Tonys tales of "the good old days" certainly rang a bell Your gas fired "copper" (as we called it ) was in our case coal fired in corner of the scullery/kitchen ,The Kitchen/living room was heated by a cast iron "Kitchener " stove a sort of early Aga on which a kettle simmered ready to bring to the boil .Toast was easily made on this , a drop down front of the fire box allowed you to let heat into room and do the toast as long as you used the toastin fork. a wire telesopic fork that kept the bread close to the fire and your hands safe from burning . The scullery had brick floor & was un heated good chance of frozen pipes. The "Facility's" were outside and almost certainly Frozen up despite being wrapped up with old coats ect ...... The pantry was under the stairs had a marble slab in and a meat safe (wooden cupboard with perforated zinc mesh sides to allow air flow) NO fridge . Milk, when we had it delivered in bottles could push the cap off the bottle and stand an inch above the neck .But as we had a farm at the end of the road we got our milk in a jug. Going to collect the milk from the dairy attached to the cow shed I remember the smell of the sterilizing fluid A commercial version of Milton now used for babies bottles. The milk jug had a muslin cover with beads hanging down to keep it in position . >>>>>>>>>>>>>> |

Not normally in work on a Wednesday
----------------------------------------But got a call to go in as they couldnt get in the office building so ended up doing some pathway gritting after letting folks in ( key was in the place it has been for the last 10 years ) but couldnt be found And its snowed again . >>>>>>>>>>>>>> 1962/63 winter if you recall was pretty grim Dec--late Feb snow never went away.in Kent we had snow ploughs they cut carriage ways on roads and banked up snow just stayed 5 feet high. I don't recall us running out of grub despite our meagre storage. pavements were cleared if not by council workers the local population cleared outside their house's . Cars did have snow chains and when I worked in a garage customers had heavy treaded tyres "Town and country" ? fitted stored for them and fitted at onset of winter . In 1964 when I worked at Dungeness Powerstation we had snow. & due to the flat nature of the location the snow drifted,Roads in the district had snow fences back from the road to prevent blockages but once you had over a certain amount of the white stuff ...... The station was at the end of a 2 mile approach road another 4 miles into Lydd and we the station staff had to clear that to ensure the next shift could get in to re leave us there was a time when we were cut off and the army who were based in Lydd used half tracks to feed us again due to the nature of the area they couldnt fetch the next shift in because the staff couldnt get close enough for transport help being stuck in the outer villages ....... >>>>>>>>>> this week we have had freezing weather the canal frozen canal boats with smoking chimneys the smell of wood smoke . at Glasson dock small coastal vessels were loading coal and there was ice on top of the water in the dock (sea Water) so its C O L D >>>>>>>>> keep warm Lads and Laddettes ![]() ---------------------------------------- [Edit 2 times, last edit by densnaps at Jan 6, 2010 12:15:25 PM] |

Still heavy snow here! Apparently Alfie is having the time of his life this morning (daughter just phoned). He is out in the road with his master (son-in-law) and refuses to come in!! None of them could get to work this morning and my daughter (who is a Theatre nurse) said they had to cancel all operations! There are all these knock-on effects that you don't initially think about.
I am trying to work out why, when I could go out at any time I like, it doesn't bother me, and now I can't go out, it is all I want to do! I have got to get some of those jobs done that I promised myself I would do today. ![]() |

It is getting a bit scary now!
Snow hasn't stopped falling all day and now the falling snow is getting thicker and faster! I think my hopes of a thaw tomorrow were completely too optimistic! ![]() |

Evening all
Yes, we in the smoke finally got our share too but it isn't too deap and pretty constant traffic have kept the roads clear. It's only the pavements that can be dodgy and many people are taking their chances of walking in the road. And yes, it's not as bad so far as 1962/3. My Daughter No 2 was born in the November of 62 and we hadn't yet got full central heating as the snow didn't move and the Thames froze over enough for me to walk along part of it. The one bonus I can remember is that I had a Morris 1000 at the time which, because of it's front wheel drive, was one of the best cars to have when dealing with the conditions, and i needed my car for work daily. As for the 40's, my experience is much like yours Den with a copper in the scullery where the one sink and cold tap (fed from the local Lake) was and, naturally, an outside loo. Life took place in the room that was kithen, dining and living combined with the range for cooking, heating the irons which also doubled up as hot water bottles and an oil lamp on the dining table where everybody sat in the dark evenings and I did my homework. And, I remember it all with fondness and, of course, virtually no-one had television and such luxeries for us to be envious of. |

Evening all,
Spent the morning, between angina attacks, clearing the snow from the front path. Laid down for a nap in the afternoon, and woke up to anoter three inches of snow. So I have given up, and am hibernating until the spring! |
