Re: Beta Testing for upcoming project application

Was kind of effortless to get more... on my way to Silver with this beta6 v 6.14.

Runs well, looking like an hour or less a piece.

Not checkpointing very frequently, noting 18 minutes apart for the first few.

Memory use very very pleasant low at 9mb RAM, peak 15mb RAM so far after 30 minutes. The Virtual Memory with almost 300mb is large. Might that imply substantial memory to disk i/o (?)... Process explorer properties screen suggests not. Kernel time and page faulting also very small.

Graphics frame nice dark corporate sky clean blue. Oddly, first time it came up, but after closing it and trying few minutes later the graphics screen refused to come back. Did not impede the job progress or cause other system instability.

The client, 6.2.28 shows still this rush, task switching bug, so got betas in "waiting to run" after running few seconds and 2 more running.

so far the current info.

[Edit: Turns out the TTC was not close... 2 hours is more realistic on the C2D centrino duo.]

[Edit2: The Peak memory near the end shows 21mb, still big thumbs up]

Re: Beta Testing for upcoming project application

Looking that way. The estimate started at 8 hours, but is coming down.

I concur about the memory use. Presumably this is the same FORTRAN memory management artefact we have seen before.

The disk IO so far is very acceptable.

Re: Beta Testing for upcoming project application

Updated my previous post with some data... memory peak went to 21mb. VM unmoving on 294mb.

On the graphics, they could only be brought up once. Exiting BOINC manager whilst leaving the service running and starting BM again allows to show the graphics once. And so on, a reproducible bug in client or science graphics?

I can't reproduce your graphics problem.

Regards. GIB@ !
Queue should be minimal, with no extra buffer at all (zero days extra). As one job gets close to completion, it will download only one more. They want beta results back quickly, so if you have a 3-4 day buffer queue, you aren't going to get any betas at all. With 5 cores running with 0 or 1 job waiting for each, I got one beta.

I have one to play with...almost an hour into it at 20% with less than four to go... No, never mind that. It just recalculated. Now at just over 1 hour run, it's showing 6% complete and 6.5 hours to go. That's a fairly big change. The percentage used no longer roughly compares.

I don't have a problem displaying graphics again with repeated requests, or even if exiting BOINC completely and restarting. In addition to the 3 blue rectangles for future info, the percent completed follows the BOINC percent complete very closely.

Not checkpointing very frequently, noting 18 minutes apart for the first few.

Checkpointing is fairly frequent here, every 2-3 minutes.

Re: Beta Testing for upcoming project application

sigh, yep of course... pref is set to 999 seconds disk write blushing

first job ended 1:54 hours. Result log rather short, no give aways, no best energy or anything.

Result Log

<core_client_version>6.2.28</core_client_version>
<![CDATA[
<stderr_txt>
Calling initGraphics()
INFO: No state to restore. Start from the beginning.
####Message = NORMAL STOP
called boinc_finish

</stderr_txt>
]]>

New work units, same graphics issue, can view for both the running jobs only once and having to exit/restart BM to get them up once more.

[Edit: This is not reproducible with HCC graphics. Can be opened and shut and reopened... i.e. only this Beta does this. Notice the graphics screen is re sizable. The Progress bar element does not, but the 2 frames do proportionally.]

Mine is set to 60 seconds....hmmm...I might kick that up a bit to get a better ratio of computation time.

Re: Beta Testing for upcoming project application

With this new round, I got one WU on 3 of my four machines. The good news is, each machine is running a different version of the BOINC client. One the current WCG client, one the recommended Boinc page client, and one the newest "beta" client from the Boinc pages. :) I'll post results when they finish. At the moment they are just in queue to run, not marked high priority.
