Does it look like TigerDirect is renaming itself The all new CompUSA.com, or is it just me? I think they did buy CompUSA including the name. Yes, they did that back in January. here I can't find any thing that they are going to rebrand under CompUSA name. ??? Maybe tomorrow's breaking news? I noticed some common web pages today and got an e-mail to confirm my registration for the 100 PC givaway from CompUSA even though I registered from a TigerDirect page. The outlet store pages on TigerDirect now show both logos. They are both sub's of Systemax. The latest headlines here I don't see anything on the horizon. The stock has been flat and the tech sector has not exactly been "on fire" lately. Rebranding is very expensive. Their current theme seems to be "sister stores". Long term ... CompUSA was a major brand and I would see them going in that direction. CompUSA was a "brick and mortor' name while TigerDirect has has more of an online name ... they could go the other way. "The all new CompUSA" seems to have been coined after they were sold and most of the stores were closed. **** Good morning MOT! 47.5 here this morning ... I think Fall has fell. I will be away Friday through early next week.EDIT: Lots of Windows updates this morning and, of course, the mandatory reboot. ![]() ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by Dataman at Sep 10, 2008 3:01:52 PM] |

Enough work on the new quad for one night. One last note - I really would appreciate it if someone could step up and be willing to take about 30 seconds each day from this Saturday thru the next to do a simple copy and paste of the team data. I really don't want to have to debate shutting down a laptop and taking it with me just for a minute's worth of connectivity, especially on a vacation. Keith, I'll do it if it's not hard to do. Just let me know how to get the data. Jonathan, let me put this in your context - it's so easy even a Yalie could do it. After the team stats update at the end of the day (and before they update again the next end of day), simply go to this URL: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/team/viewTe...amp;numRecordsPerPage=350 then select the text in the data table starting with marysduby (the first entry) to Jayan Thettath (the last entry), copy it, go into Notepad, paste the text into there, save the file with some name (yymmdd eg.) as a txt file and then send that file to me (attached to an email). You could wait and mail them all to me at once when I'm back too. Wait to delete the txt files until I've confirmed getting them after my return (just in case). I'll send you the file from last night so you can see one. If you pull a copy of the data before the stats update tonight, you should end up with a file that looks the same. Gives you a chance to do a dry run. Once I'm back, I'll process the files thru my stats cooker and post each day's stats.EDIT: GEEZ! Forgot the most important part - THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU ---------------------------------------- [Edit 1 times, last edit by keithhenry at Sep 10, 2008 4:53:00 PM] |

Shoot. I add a quad and get less points. I'd better check the PV jail. ![]() All the WU's on the new machine will almost invariably go sit in the PV jail for some amount of time. The amount depends on if you keep a "queue" and how big. When you first start up BOINC on a new machine, it will pull enough WUs to "fill up your queue". Since those are all being sent at pretty much the same time, they are WU's just being sent out to users at that time. Unless they are single quorum WUs or the other cruncher(s) who get the same WU start crunching it when you do, it'll end up in the PV jail. As the machine works it's way down thru that initial "load" and gets into dealing with the normal in and out of the pipeline, you'll have higher that normal numbers in the PV jail. I've pondered it a bit and think you're best off loading up your queue in the beginning as opposed to slowly ramping it up on the new machine as the latter would appear to just delay it getting into normal mode. Every single WU on my new quad is going straight to the PV jail so far. |

My jail is down because I have a lot of resources at other projects and, for the last few weeks, I've to shut everything down from 13:00 - 19:00 due to heat. Have a great vacation. I'll be away too. ![]() ![]() |

I'm not sure what I'll do.. a PS3 would be nice, but not sure if I could really "use" it for wcg projects, right? What I meant earlier by "things" is upgrading my current desktop or how to speed it up, if possible. Dr. Mike (Hurricane Ike coming soon to a city near you.. rather me.. grr..) Mike, these days, the best way to upgrade a machine is usually to replace it with the current technology. The hardware geeks out there can get into building their own machines and deal with things like swapping out motherboards and such but us ordinary folks do better to take the "package deals". I prefer getting machines that I think are going to be the most reliable. Truth is, I hate dealing with stuff that breaks too soon or too often. I've found that Consumer Reports typically rates Apples and Lenovos best on reliability. They're not always what they choose as their "Best Buys" but I find that paying a little extra for quality costs less in the long run. I'd probably do okay with an Apple but I just haven't been able to make the "psychic" leap to the different architecture even though you should be able to run Windows stuff there just fine now (yea, I'm old and set in my ways and I admit it). The fact that I can get Lenovos at a discount is icing on the cake. With a couple of pieces of info and the right URL, you can get the same discount too (all legit too). Figure on around $1400-1500 for a nice desktop (with monitor) or laptop. That's not their low end machines but it's not the high end either. I find that gets me machines I can count on to be pretty trouble free for 3-4 years at least for a laptop and probably even longer for a desktop. It's nice if you can use them for other uses too (like in a LAN in your office if you end up with your own practice) but eventually, you run out of excuses like that and you just have to buy a cruncher. Over time, you can pick up more knowledge from folks here and others you know but your time is highly occupied with other things for now.---------------------------------------- [Edit 1 times, last edit by keithhenry at Sep 10, 2008 5:43:03 PM] |

Look at the graphs at the bottom of my data sheet. WCG running on four computers produces between 1500 to 2900 BOINC points per day. PS3grid running on my 8800GT returns 3232 points per day minimum. That means that my one graphics card is more efficient than any of the CPUs at my disposal. Moral of the story - CRUNCH ON YOUR GRAPHICS CARDS (if you have Nvidia, which you should).

Oh wait, no, don't do that. |

Unfortunately, a project's science apps have to support this. I believe you've found the two projects that do. The fact that PS3Grid requires you run a 6.3 level of BOINC also indicates that BOINC itself needed changes for this as well. The topic has come up regularly in the forums here. Maybe next year? |
