Really great crunching numbers..! I'm kind of curious.. those in the top 10.. what kinds of machines are you running to get those types of numbers? Jealous here.. Dr. Mike.. ![]() My Farm: 6 Q6600 quads, 1 6400 duo, 4 P4 duos, 2 P4 singles (36 cores). Currently Crunchin’: 5 quads and the 6400 (22 cores). Will be going back to around 100F by Fri so will probably shut a couple of quads down tomorrow. ![]() Wow.. did you make your own quads? Where did you get them if not? Dr. Mike.. ![]() Are you going to shut down the P4 duos and singles for good? I read that they're not energy efficient enough to be worth running. All some folks have are P4 singles. If energy costs are not an issue for them, I'd hope to see them continue crunching. Perhaps in time they will be able to upgrade but perhaps not. Either way, their contribution is still important and needed. Energy costs are just one factor but for folks like Dataman and others with high electric bills, they have to decide whether to retire their P4s, retire and replace, or keep running them. I'm with you on this one Keith, but if you have a decent server farm started, it's simply not cost-efficient to run the slower machines. The only reason my roommate runs his p4 at all is because its his only computer. When he gets a new one, that old pc will go offline permanently. |

The only reason my roommate runs his p4 at all is because its his only computer. When he gets a new one, that old pc will go offline permanently. I started with one P4 single too in '04. I’m not going to start up the P4’s in the fall. I probably will bring up the one machine with the Pentium D chip. Slow but faster than the P4’s. I’ve been giving surplus equipment to my local elementary school for years and now they don’t even want P4’s. They want C2D's or better. The quads are all commercial off-the-shelf machines: 4 HP’s, 1 Dell and 1 Gateway (AKA CRAPway ... its down again due to crashing “issues”). No argument here. If all you have is 1 or 2 P4’s ... run them. But, in my opinion, if anyone is going to add machine(s) or run a farm, I recommend Q6600 or better processors. You can offset the price of the machine with the reduced electricity within a few months (at least at CA prices). Running 14 cores of P4’s costs me about the same as running 22 cores of Q6600’s and, at standard clocking, it takes the P4 chip ~3 times as long to do a given WU than the Q6600. Runs slower and costs more per unit of run time... not a good deal! And the prices of Q6600 machines are dropping rapidly as better processors come out. PS: Since I shut down the P4’s in late May and have been adjusting what I run due to the heat in the foothills, my electric bill dropped over $150/month. I’m going to use that money to buy a half of tank of gasoline and Two tacos. ![]() EDIT: Twice for 'fat fingers". ![]() ![]() [Edit 2 times, last edit by Dataman at Jul 23, 2008 8:21:50 PM] |

Quads are really childishly easy to OC to 2.8 ghz (11.2 overall ghz). You see absolutely no compromise in performance or heat. And with such a conservative overclock, you are almost certainly not going to seriously compromise the lifetime of the components. You gain 1.6 ghz per q6600 for a cost of basically 0 dollars. And if you listen to Blizzie, apparently you can get these Q6600s to 3.2-3.3 ghz stable (assuming you have some technical expertise). That would push your machine to a whopping 13.2 ghz overall! If anyone is considering building a new quad, I seriously recommend www.ibuypower.com. Their customer service is not quite "top notch," but their prices are considerably lower than Alienware, while still providing the same plethora of choices for equipment. I built a decked out gaming machine for about $1600. You could build a basic quad on their site for less than 700 (who needs graphics?). Or you could try this barebones site I'm interested in trying. http://www.portatech.com/catalog/viewitem.asp?ID=25351&O=25461 According to them, you could build a very fast very good cruncher for about 600, less if you want to install your own hard drives and cd drives. I might make one of these a summer project! [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Jul 23, 2008 8:49:06 PM] |

Agreed, when you're farming a crop of servers, these are the sorts of issues you get into. Also, you probably aren't too concerned about the money to replace an old machine with a new one. Must be nice! Now I'm jealous too. ![]() |

After paying $4 even for a tank, caught a $3.99 price before I got stuck with $4.05. Just got a tankful this morning at $3.91! Couldn't believe that. Seeing a fair amount of $3.95-$4.02 now. Oil's dropped a good bit lately. Maybe it's not a short blip. Heck, schools start back here first of the month! Gonna have to adjust to my daughter being in kindergarden that starts at 7:30 (the bus stops by at 6:45 when she starts riding that in time). Geez, get the high schoolers up at those hours, not the little ones. Actually, I'm halfway happy with energy costs right now - for me anyway. The dual-fuel HVAC system I put in for the downstairs has been great. Normally, I'd go thru a full 330 gallon tank of propane in January - about $400-600 dollars these days. Propane for January this year was about $100-125 but electric did go up some. Still, rough answer looks like I've cut that cost in half plus the electric bill for the summer AC has been noticably less too. This next bill will be interesting to see. |

Must be nice! Now I'm jealous too. ![]() My problem has been I buy a quad to replace a P4 ... then keep the P4 running too. @ Jonathan: You are right, OC'ing does more work but I don't like the time/hassles associated with it. I don't like Okra either ... but some people do. With the 5% (or more) price increase in electricity PG&E has planned in October, lots of California crunchers will be looking at their electric bills. It would be encouraging though if one of the DC projects actually found an alien or cured a disease though. I read the projects' status reports and am still waiting for that Eureka moment. Mostly they just talk about results being "promising", "encouraging', "interesting" and my favorite, "helping us to refine our model". BTW: Did they ever find the largest prime number? A little daily sarcasm from the Dataman ... ![]() ![]() |

I never thought I would say $3.91 was cheap. Last I paid was $4.46.9 and the Saleen wants the $4.69.9 hi-test. Propane is a ripoff too here but I only use it for the water heater. When it needs replacing, I'm going to replace it with an on-demand type Europe has been using for decades. I figue it cost $200/year to burn a pilot light. ![]() |
