But, of course, we do, Punchy@BC
----------------------------------------![]() At Grand Hotel we would never dream of separating our guests from their best friends! Never, never. And we shall see to it that you’ll get a steady flow of tiramisú and ice cream coming your way ![]() You can always shave it off with another cross(your)country bike trip ![]() Did you get tested for Leiden V as I mentioned ^^^ futher back, Punchy? Added: If your dogs are the Greenland dog/Siberian husky sort, they'll like last night's menu - which you yourself obviously don't ![]() ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Dec 21, 2017 8:29:24 AM] |

I forgot to ask if the Grand Hotel allows pets. I have 4 dogs that would like to come along for the trip. They will be happy to eat as many hot dogs as you can find. I'll stick to tiramisu and ice cream ;-) Would worstenbroodjes suit their tastes, Mr. Punchy@BC? These are great to grab as a snack, a hot food lunch item or just because! Don't mind the Dutch word worst as we pronounce the 'o' in 'worst' in a different way (actually the same as in 'hot' and 'dog') and worst means 'sausage' (not in the case of a worstenbroodje - we use minced meat instead). If you see the word 'worstkaasscenario', you'll notice that it looks similar to worst case scenario and that's exactly what it means! Dutch people like to play with language. Various types of worst and kaas (cheese) are (not the only) typical items on your Dutch breakfast-table.We've plenty of worstenbroodjes available. If you like, mevrouw Kleine Zeemeermin will put 4 worstenbroodjes, for your dogs to try them out, in the oven. How are we doing in the races? Mevrouw Kleine Zeemeermin, I'm afraid our faulty frontdeskcomputer has given up the ghost. It didn't send one single result anymore to WCG headquarters since two days ago.
----------------------------------------Wait! - I've got an idea. We have got a Fairphone lying here at the frontdesk. The repairwoman left it here for emergency reasons and said we can use that device, should anything happen to the frontdeskcomputer. Wouldn't that be ideal for you, mevrouw Kleine Zeemeermin, a Fairyphone? Good news: when in Harlingen I was able to save a few Tony Chocolonely's chocolate bars! Our Grand Hotel guests will gladly appreciate them, I'm sure. Nice news: one visitor brought her laptop to our office and said she wanted a dual boot machine, so our repairwoman placed Linux Zorin OS on it. Zorin OS is an alternative to Windows and macOS, designed to make your computer faster, more powerful and secure. [Edit 1 times, last edit by adriverhoef at Dec 22, 2017 1:09:43 AM] |

Just a very quick reaction from your overworked room maid, cook, receptionist, dog walker, you name it.
I shall address your two post 'shortly' as they say. Shortly! A quick scan seemed to reveal that you want me to do something like baking. I may be wrong. A close scrutinizing will tell, but let me state just in case - in all cases: I don't bake, captain. I cannot bake. I make bricks ![]() And Upstairs Yvonne who does cannot do it long distance from Andalusia. I shall and will be back - with my overtime statement But you have had your share van tegenslag, so of course .... But NO baking ![]() |

I am pleasantly surprised, mevrouw Kleine Zeemeermin, you used the word tegenslag correctly in a sentence, a Dutch word in an English sentence, so now you must know 'de betekenis van tegenslag' (the meaning of adversity) - I am proud of you! And you probably can tell the difference between hagelslag and tegenslag, too.
![]() So you don't do baking. No problem, can you handle a microwave oven? We have two of them to speed up the process of heating worstenbroodjes, so that they can be served quickly. |

Hagelslag and tegenslag. What is 'hagel' and what is 'tegen'? Hagel (hail) consists of solid frozen water-granules falling down from the sky when it is freezin' cold. Tegen is against. When there is tegenwind, you are running or riding against the wind. Remember Bob Seger's song or take the one way wind by The Cats in the 'opposite' direction (Dutch: richting, Deutsch: Richtung). Don't know how long that will be. In the meantime we'll have to wait for the new computer. The (brandnew) processor is all we need now. It won't take very long anymore, I'm sure.Say, doesn't microwaves deliver soggy worstenbroodjes? Well, it's best to defrost the worstenbroodjes first and then put them into the microwave, else they will probably get soggy. ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by adriverhoef at Dec 21, 2017 6:15:41 PM] |

Captain adriverhoef, you are very productive today. I take it as a sign that you're feeling better. I'll look closer at your most recent installment when I have taken care of Grand Hotel's Thursday Dinner.
This really belongs in the ’FC Language United’ thread, but we have this on hold for the time being, right? Adriano Celanto's Prisencolinensinainciusol with the impossible lyrics ... I almost pretended it was your behaviour over the weekend, captain adriverhoef. A wild man. Your Italian namesake. Important to notice: Namesake. It’s a unisex word. Good for unisex names. How do you say namesake in Dutch? In Denmark we – as you know – don’t try to confuse anybody. We have a strict separation of the sexes namewise. This is also mirrored in the words: ’navnesøster’ and ’navnebror’ ~ ’namesister’ and ’namebrother’. Good Afternoon Base Campers! Winter Solstice Tonight is the longest night in the Northern hemisphere. Denmark is a small country. Still there is an amazing difference of the length of this night depending on where you live. 16 h 45’ at Gedser the southermost point. 16 h 59’ at Denmark’s Meteorlogical Institute in Copenhagen – you could say 14 minutes to the north of the south 17 h 28’ at Skagen the most northern point – almost half an hour to the north you could say from Copenhagen, and no less than 43’ from north to south. A distance of just 259 km/161 miles. ultimaThule’s Helsinki is far more to the north. The Finnish population is said to have a high degree of SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder – winter depression). ![]() Flattering Yesterday I saw my MD. She prescribed a bandage which she hopes will clear the fluid from my leg so I don’t need to invest too much of my savings in those ’tailormade compression stockings’. My left leg is wrapped in a highly organic looking foam rubber dressing with a similarly organic looking elastic dressing wrapped over it. We’ll see how it behaves. Check up and change or whatever is needed on December 27th. No stilettos for the foreseeable future …. ![]() ![]() Christmas 2017 Race You gave the figures, captain adriverhoef. A few comments: We are doing nicely at #12. The distance to Kraland is bigger, the distance to SeriousCrunchers smaller. Kraland IV Challenge Still #2 neatly in front of SeriousCrunchers at #3. Kraland, you have to pedal faster Chores ![]() Rushing out to get what I need for cooking. See you when dinner is ready |

Good Evening Base Campers!
It’s the longest night, it’s dark, but the lights people put up at homes and businesses light up the darkness. Inside we light candles to create hygge. It’s a long night, and I saw the moon was just the thinnest of a sliver. Normally, this will mean frost during the night as warm air is allowed to pass freely into space, when there are no clouds. So, once again, it will be soup. An inexpensive share cropper soup. Leeks, carrots, potatoes, homemade meat balls with a lot of pepper in them and – I never learned what it’s American name is – we call it selleri which is pronounced like celery, only that celery is what Danes call leaf celery. So where does that leave the selleri? Here you have both. What do you call the round one? ![]() OK, we shall have a soup - almost on a stone ![]() and have bread – crusty French baguette today – to go with it. Let’s imagine I made the soup with bones. That would give Punchy@BC’s four dogs something to keep them busy. Which kind of dogs are they, Punchy? We shall have dessert today. We call it apple cake, but it’s not a cake. No baking involved. It’s apple sauce preferably made from Belle de Boskoop apples [Schone van Boskoop bred in the Netherlands about 1850] layered with breadcrums that have been roasted with sugar and butter and maybe some chopped almonds. We also put a few crumbled macaroons in that mix, and on the top of the bowl we put whipped cream – and maybe some red currant jelly, just because it’s pretty. ![]() Captain adriverhoef, Christmas is near. I believe you celebrate Christmas on the evening of December 24th as we do in Denmark, and as ultimaThule does in Finland as well. Our American friends are able to wait until the 25. Tomorrow we are going to have an offspring of today’s food, but for the 23rd I imagined we could serve the traditional Dutch Christmas meal, and for the 24th the Danish one – or the other way around if you prefer. Then on the 25th when the Christmas 2017 Race ends, we could have the American version. I’m not really sure how it goes. As far as I remember, it’s pretty much a repeat of the Thanksgiving dinner with turkey and many, many trimmings. And for dessert? Was there any? Please, American Base Campers, enlighten me ![]() Sure, I’ll do it again, Adri, anytime ![]() |

Captain adriverhoef, Christmas is near. I believe you celebrate Christmas on the evening of December 24th as we do in Denmark, and as ultimaThule does in Finland as well. Christmas Eve (24 December) is indeed the night before the two days of Christmas (25 and 26 December). Wikipedia says "In West-Europa wordt 25 december als eerste kerstdag en 26 december als tweede kerstdag beschouwd" (which Google for some reason translates as In Western Europe, December 25 is considered Christmas Day and December 26 as Boxing Day). What is Boxing Day? (eerste kerstdag = first Christmas Day, tweede kerstdag = second Christmas Day)Our American friends are able to wait until the 25. Tomorrow we are going to have an offspring of today’s food, but for the 23rd I imagined we could serve the traditional Dutch Christmas meal, and for the 24th the Danish one – or the other way around if you prefer. Wikipedia says "Vandaag de dag is het vooral in Nederland gebruikelijk om tijdens Kerst te gourmetten met familie." which roughly translates as Today, it is customary in the Netherlands to cook with family at Christmas according to Google Translate. But 'gourmetten' is not the same as 'to cook'. Gourmetten is a "vorm van recreatief tafelen waarbij ieder aan tafel in pannetjes zijn eigen gerechten klaarmaakt" (a form of recreational dining where everyone at the table prepares their own dishes in little pans). An example for six persons. Some possible ingredients, sitting at the table and another example. Ingredients: Meat / Fish / Vegetarian, Bread- and/or Potatoproducts, Vegetables (to be baked / cold), Various foods. Some gourmet-recipes.Picture tiny little pans and spatulas for each diner to help you prepare your own miniature steaks, slavink (ground meat), schnitzels, and tiny hamburgers on a searing hot griddle. You'll also find garlic sauce, whiskey sauce, garlic butter, and—if you're lucky—pancake batter, resting in the wings on the table, along with some chopped peppers, onions, and a bowl of eggs. Gourmetten is one of the most popular ways to spend Christmas dinner. It is all about convenience—nobody will get bored with all those teensy pans and miniature foods, and our cook can sit back and relax at the table. Every person must cook their own meal. It's easy and it's fun, you have to prepare a number of things, but once you sit down, you don't have to get up anymore and there's another big advantage: if something fails, you can't blame anyone but yourself. Every supermarket is selling ready-to-eat (cheap) meat packages nowadays. At our Grand Hotel we will of course buy our meat at a real butcher and use real butter.
