Mevrouw Kleine Zeemeermin, I just read in the newspaper that the Danish blackmetalsinger Amalie Bruun aka Myrkur is coming to our Grand Hotel on 20 January where she will perform her song Siren, isn't that nice? She will also have an acoustic folkset with a female choir in TivoliVredenburg (in Utrecht) on the same day. Do you think her show will be like this one?

Yes
![]() ![]() You know I'm into more peaceful pitter-patter plitter-platter music, so I just secured a ticket for my local music man Bjarke Falgren's concert with British Ana Silvera come March ... The video was made on the island of Møn some 40 miles to the southeast of me where you among other things find Denmark's answer to the White Cliffs of Dover ![]() |

Mevrouw Kleine Zeemeermin, today I took an early flight to Denmark. That's where I spoke with singer Myrkur. She directed me to two interesting historical sites that I visited:
Danish radiohistory ![]() Radio Mercur ![]() Can you just imagine that Avisen wrote: "Den nygifte Otto Brandenburg var så populær, at da alle klappede og trampede i gulvet, kunne han ikke høres fra højtalerne"? Funny: Myrkur, Mercur. Before I left Myrkur she asked Kati Ran to assist her and then they performed Himlen blev sort (the sky became black) on some sort of lyre and/or nyckelharpa. Now that we're talking on the Fair(y)phone, mevrouw Kleine Zeemeermin, at the frontdesk I have left another Fair ![]() As for your health, mevrouw Kleine Zeemeermin, would this shop or this (same) shop be something for you? |

What a treat you treated yourself to, captain adriverhoef. Did you get to meet your Danish colleague Jørgen de Mylius? I'm sure the two of you could have talked yourselves all the way into 2018.
Funny, I have never been aware of that museum, so now I have made a note of it in my 'Idea Bank'. I know another one, though which may have borderline interest to you. The Post & Telegraf Museum. Recently they found an original 'Enigma' machine in their basement. This particular museum has a neat top floor café ![]() where you can enjoy the roofs of the old inner city of Copenhagen. Are you still in Copenhagen? We could have a coffee there. There is something Norse mythology about this Myrkur, and the word has roots far back Nyckelharpa means 'nøgleharpe', which I don't know what is, but 'nyckelharpa' is Swedish. Thank you for the frontdeskfairyphone. I have so many scraps of paper with writing in pencil ... ![]() PecosRiverM has Base Camped a lot of times and is experienced. I cried for him everywhere without seemingly getting his attention ![]() but all of a sudden: Here we go ![]() PecosRiver hails from the PecosRiver banks of Texas and the 'M' is the brand the family used for branding their cattle at their ranch. As far as I know he's as American as can be. If my memory serves me, he is married to a very beautiful woman who has ties to Mexico. But maybe he would like to introduce himself instead of having my fragile memory doing it ![]() Yes, he is a dedicated cruncher. Look here ![]() As far as I know PecosRiverM subsides on coffee. Hot, black, and strong. ![]() As for your shopping suggestion, Adri, I considered using this ![]() ![]() I'm fine. ![]() My bandage and I took a shower with a garbage bag wrapped around that leg ... ![]() Not all that convenient ... ![]() ![]() ![]() Well, rushing off to secure one of Kringlebagerens delicious black breads before nightfall ....exercising that leg at the same time ![]() Which by the way reminds me that PecosRiverM is a baker (if he still is) with the largest bakery in Texas - and I believe in the whole of USA. You know I'm into more peaceful pitter-patter plitter-platter music Yes, I should know that, I'm sorry, I grew up with all kinds of popmusic.Maybe tomorrow, maybe tonight, After having Tea, we could try a short children's song, if you could wear Not Just A Flower In Your Hair, so we can perform together before our Grand Hotel guests, on the special Christmas evening? (Are you angry, pick a rose And put it on your hat It's an old story But it still works well Wear a flower in your hair And be fond of each other Just sing lalalalala Lalalalalala Lalalalalalalalalalalalalala!) The video was made on the island of Møn some 40 miles to the southeast of me Miles? Seamiles or airmiles? Are you swimming across the Danish seas or flying across the Danish skies ![]() - Danish work ethic - An Italian, a Frenchman and a Dane are sitting in an Italian bar. "The legs of our bar stools look so short," says the Italian, "not because they really are short, but because Italian women have such long legs." The Frenchman adds: "I can easily comprise the waistlines of my mistress with my hands, not because I have such big hands, but because French women have such slender waistlines." Then the Dane replies, "When I go to work in the morning, I give the lady a nice slap on the ***. When I return home, I still see the print of my hand. It's not because Danish women have such fat butts, but because we work so short." That's what I read in my newspaper today, mevrouw Kleine Zeemeermin. I'm just reading it, mind you? A few more quotes: - There is a country where the bikepaths are just as decent, the gardens are equally raked, the drizzles equally rattling, the men equally unbalanced, the women equally robust and the communication equally outspoken. Sociability (gezelligheid) is called hygge. If we leave out the smørrebrød, the little mermaid, the pipe smokers, the helmets on the bicycle and the ø, the æ and the å, there is no country in the world that looks like the Netherlands like Denmark. - Are the Danes happier? Why? Maybe there is a somewhat stronger sense of community, more small-scale, more space too: five million people instead of seventeen on the same piece of land, it makes a difference. A Dutchman living in Copenhagen says it like this: 'If you are not in the traffic jam to the beach in good weather, you will be much less annoyed by your fellow man.' Danish happiness also has to do with the Danish welfare state. It has traditionally been more generously proportioned than the Dutch and has been less stripped down over the past fifteen years. 'The feeling that not everything depends on winning or losing, that there is a good safety net when you fall, it turns out to be important for happiness in almost every study. It is striking that European welfare states are so under attack: they always come out best from happiness research.' - Income differences are small in happy countries, working weeks are short. There should be a good balance between work and leisure. 'Trust is the cement of a society. Example: in a few years time, more than 30 percent of Danes started drinking organic milk. In Italy that would never have been possible, they would have thought: 'there is something behind it, they are trying to cheat us'. Denmark is also a leader when it comes to environmentally friendly energy. In the past, the outside-world knew us from bacon and porn, nowadays from wind energy and organic agriculture.' - Striking for outsiders is the uniformity of Danish interiors, enhanced by the ubiquity of objects from the same twentieth-century Danish designers. People living at 55 degrees north latitude between the North Sea and the Baltic Sea all own chairs by Børge Mogensen and lamps by Arne Jacobsen - it is a law that can almost measure itself with that of gravity. - Denmark is non-fiction! It lies in the middle of the world and … its beauty is: it has a lot to offer the world. *edited to appropriate forum language - ErikaT [Edit 1 times, last edit by ErikaT at Dec 26, 2017 2:09:38 PM] |

Miles, Adri. Miles as in American miles. Car miles. One mile ~ 1609.34 meters ~ 1.6 km. I forgot I should have written kilometers.
Did you know that the Americans have approved a law changing into metric many, many years ago? They just don’t have implemented it yet. ![]() Did you know that in Massachusetts they have a stretch of Interstate highway (I 495) where the signs say km just to show how confusing that is, I think? Have you noticed that Capt. Joe of Minnesota Crunchers always states distances in miles as well as kilometers? Good Afternoon Base Campers! Our Base Camp Crew We expanded overnight. PecosRiverM joined us. Once again: Welcome to you ![]() We are very pleased that you decided to donate the results from your crunching farm to top40.nl Team Base Camp I asked TLD who has been a Base Camper forever and now crunches faithfully with SeriousCruncher if he could create a team for Base Camp. We have Base Camp HQ, but the ghost captain went AWOL without leaving the key. So now we have a new Base Camp team - A place to park when not treking is the very nice description TLD gave. There is but one member. TLD took care of that, too. Thank you so much, Ted, for doing all that work and guiding me as well. Our challenges Christmas 2017 Race We are #11 and proud of it just 125,000 points ahead of SeriousCrunchers at #12 and Kraland sits firm on #13 no less than 2½ mio points in front of Chicago-IL-USA. We may have a hard time reaching Vulture Central III who are some 700,000 points ahead of us. But that's OK. We have done far better than expected. Thank you to everybody who has pitched in. Kraland IV Challenge We are #2 with a safe distance to SeriousCrunchers at #3. Kraland at #5 is ahead of Chicago-IL-USA here as well. Very neat crunching as you can see from the Results stats Dinner We shall have meatballs in a celery stew (the round one which I don’t know the name of). We boil celery dices in the water we saved from cooking our meatballs and make a gravy from that soup into which we mix the celery and meatballs and sprinkle with parsley. Simple, inexpensive and honest food. We shall have newly baked black bread from Kringlebageren with it. For dessert – I actually had not calculated with dessert – but I guess everybody else likes dessert as much as Punchy@BC so I took some cakes home from Kringlebageren since I was there anyway, and I also got some Danish woorstbrootje (pølsehorn) for Punchy’s little dogs) Denmark Thank you for the very nice words you found about Denmark, captain adriverhoef. Yes, the Netherlands and Denmark are alike (as far as I could tell on a week long roadtrip). I would say that the Netherlands are more orderly, cleaner, better organized trafficwise, and to this day I still don’t understand how you manage not to come across as crowded. Three times as many people in the same area! It’s amazing you have room for fields and recreational areas. In my opinion and to me, the reason why Danes are one of the most happy peoples in the world, is trust – as you also mention, Adri. This is going somewhat downhill, but think about it: More than a millenium ago, the Vikings sailed to so many destinations with products from Denmark in commission from people in Denmark and with orders to bring back what was on the shopping list from those back home. All they had was a handshake. Everything was based on one man trusting the other man to keep his promise. This has been passed on to us today. Not long ago I posted a picture of a man's way of selling his honey in the middle of a forest. You could take your honey and put the money in the box. Another remnant from the Viking age is that women had a high degree of equality. I may sound as a feminist, but it’s a fact that in countries where women are respected and valued on an equal footing with men, everybody thrives. Just look at Vietnam to mention one such country. The Viking women were trusted with managing the farms and what have you, while their men were trekking at sea. ![]() And of course we have a safety net as a welfare state. We pay a lot of taxes, but we don’t pay for schools, university education (on the contrary, you are entitled to a monthly income from the government) and our health care is free. What I went through with my leg recently and still do cost me nothing out of my pocket. To me being ill and not be able to pay for health services and medicine must be a nightmare, and I have a good friend in a country without ’socialized medicine’ who has this kind of challenge. Give me ’socialized medicine’ anytime. And I could go on. OK, jumping down from my soapbox. |
