I think I remember you told that Radio Veronica was the Dutch equivalent to Radio Merkur in Denmark.
Come to think of it: Why did they think they had to control music to that degree?  ’The Kid’ video shows pictures of the ’Veronica’ sitting on the beach. Did she get out to sea again? When did that happen? Here you have ’Når mørket falder’ ~ When Night Falls - unfortunately not of a good quality. The refrain says ’ When the night falls all cats become grey’ with Ulla ’Sniff’ Neumann, daughter of the guitar player Ulrik Neumann of the ’Swe-Danes’.  Thank you for the cats; I’m a cat person owned by at least five during my liftime  - cats are so lovely that I gladly share my pancakes with them  Oh, those gourmetten really looks lekker, Adri. I look forward to this evening’s banquet at Grand Hotel. So nice of you to think of it. My eyes are crossing – and I bet BladeD’s are as well – just some 25 to go, which is bad enough. Yes, Børge Mogensen furniture was/is very popular, and our tables are very small. Our lamps often are Louis Poulsen Homes are broken into because of them – you can see them though the closed curtains  |

I think I remember you told that Radio Veronica was the Dutch equivalent to Radio Merkur in Denmark. I think it wasn't the music that they wanted to control. The offshore radioships were popular outlaws. One of the most popular programs on Dutch radio was the Top 40. (It still is, actually, nowadays on Radio 538 (http://538.nl).) The national institutionalized broadcastunions scared away young people - they wanted to listen to popmusic. There were two national radiostations in the sixties: Hilversum 1 and 2. Because Radio Veronica was too popular and H'sum 1 and 2 weren't (strange, with all that religious and sports programs), they decided to create Hilversum 3 for young people … in 1965 - the same year as the first Top 40 was broadcast on Radio Veronica. Still they didn't get it: each day a different broadcastunion with a different idea about how to fill the day with 'light music'. And yes, again, with religion and sports. Sigh.Come to think of it: Why did they think they had to control music to that degree? In the end, after Radio Veronica and Radio Noordzee had to close down and stop their transmissions in 1974, Hilversum 3 became more popular. ’The Kid’ video shows pictures of the ’Veronica’ sitting on the beach. Did she get out to sea again? When did that happen? On 2 April 1973 there was a devastating storm that stranded the Norderney ship of Radio Veronica. At 2:36 of that video you're hearing "We zijn van ons anker geslagen, enne, verschillende deuren zijn eruit. Er loopt geen water meer binnen, enne, de reddingsboot is langszij" (We have been knocked off our anchor, and uh …, several doors are blown away. There is no water running in, and uh …, the lifeboat is alongside) and at 3:17 "Luisteraars, goedenavond, hier is nogmaals uw technicus Ruud Doets, uh, tot onze spijt moeten we onze uitzendingen staken omdat we … te dicht het strand naderen, we gaan zometeen van boord" (Listeners, good evening, here is your technician Ruud Doets again, uh, to our regret we have to stop our transmissions because we … are approaching the beach too close, we are about to disembark). Man, it still makes me cry when I'm hearing the technician's report from that video. Here is more footage. (Note: the ship drifted into territorial waters where transmissions were illegal, so the crew/technician had to hastily throw the transmit-crystals overboard in order not to be arrested with a ready-to-use transmitter on board.) Two weeks later, after several efforts to get the ship floating again, in the early morning of April 18th, the day of the big demonstration that was planned to help Radio veronica, the Norderney was pulled loose and dragged back to its position, about six miles off the coast, outside the territorial waters. In the meantime the transmissions had been temporarily restored with the help of colleague Radio Caroline and could be heard on that radiostation. Yes, in Dutch we say "Als het donker is, zijn alle katjes grijs" (When it's dark, all cats are grey) and I love Felix domesticus, too, in particular the European Shorthair types and alikes. Mr. Wagenaar, president of the NOS at the time, the Dutch broadcasting foundation: "Piraten zijn nu eenmaal oncontroleerbaar voor de staat, er kunnen altijd nieuwe komen, winst maken is immers aantrekkelijk, en … het is zo, … dat … de wettige omroep bepaald belang … heeft … bij het feit dat de piraten verdwijnen." (After all, pirates are uncontrollable for the state, new ones can always come, for making a profit is attractive, and ... it is so, ... that ... the legitimate broadcaster has a particular interest ... in the fact that the pirates disappear.) I am about to think that "The crowd called out for more" is dedicated to the offshore radioships … and we're back at Procol Harum and our Grand Hotel!  |

Good Morning Base Campers!
Hopefully you have had all the food and drink you wanted. If not Grand Hotel has one last banquet in the state room before we consider this trek to captain adriverhoef’s little neat team over.  I never cooked a Christmas ham, so I hope you’ll forgive me if is isn’t the orthodox fashion. To me it looked good. And I see the pie, Mevrouw Punchy@BC made for us. I think I finally got to get the pecan pie that the Popeye’s had discontinued in Washington, D. C. Our challenges are finished – we did so very well - and it was fun. We shall have the final results later today, I believe. Everything was perfect – even the tumultous part was perfect. What should we have done without tanner2 falling by the wayside? We had PecosRiverM arriving just before curtain fall, lifting us even higher. You EVGA-boys – dogs, penguins, orangutans, polarbears, Northeastern Indiana, and OlddanIT, all of you so reliable. yodap even stayed on in spite of having given notice. ultimaThule, you let yourself be lured – I hope you liked it, so you will do it again sometime – but now you will go home to Capt. Joe in Minnesota. I promised him to return you unharmed. Are you unharmed? I’ll keep an eye on you – it’s always dangerous to make promises on the behalf of others … Captain adriverhoef, I have had so many good temporary captains in my life, but you, you have made this trek a fairy tale for me and I think for the entire crew. This is always the sad part. The goodbye. The empty stalls in your stable. I wish that you will have some new permanent members. Somehow we forgot to emphasize that enough along the way. My own plan is to move to My Online Team, where keithhenry invited me upon my return to WCG. My stall with top40.nl will be occupied from time to time because and because top40.nl will be one of my home teams along with Kraland and of course Crunching@EVGA. For making this trek a fairy tale, for all your music, for all your contributions and your attention to detail, for having created Grand Hotel, for everything you did, I would ask you to, please, accept Base Camps highest order, the Rosie.  Thank you, Adri.  I’m so glad I abducted you from KliK’s thread and got to know you. Please make yourself at home in this Base Camp thread, it's all yours, use it as your soapbox, advertise for new permanent members - you have freedom of speech here. Maybe you would like to trek with one of your underlings at some future Base Camp trek?  |

So schön kann doch kein Mann sein - it works in Chrome; I don't know why it doesn't in IE, Adri Now on to a story I just heard on the radio which might interest you. It did me: Knud Romer - Danish author perfect in German because his mother was German, radio host, and former marketing man His masterpiece was the Brabantia brand. When Brabantia landed on his desk it was a Dutch company with a giant and completely messy line of all kinds of household products from salad spoons to ironing boards to mail boxes. The design was not what you wanted to write home about, Knud Romer claims. Sitting at night, sniffing one kilometer of cocaine, listening to Black Sabbath while leafing through the products catalogue, he came across a garbage bin. With a 20 year guarantee. Romer exclaims that this was the USP - a Unique Selling Point. The message has to be a one liner. One message, one value. Everything else is noise. And that USP came from the garbage bin. All Brabantia's products and those of their competitors as well would end up in that garbage bin before it died. So the key word should be 'solid' Brabantia - solid company! There you go. Think Brabantia, think robust products - no buy and discard: Nothing is durable any more. Products disintegrate as do human relationsships. Solid is the value, you get with Brabrantia products. That is the message Knud Romer wanted the customers to think and dream. His props were an old tree, an old face telling a thousands stories, a golden wedding anniversary, even a rock. And then they raised the prices by 20% just to underline the solidity - a solid success all over - and where I used to live I dried the clothes in the wind on this. And it was expensive and it was solid .... |

It Ain't Over Till It's Over - by looking at this summary it seems that today is the last day of the two challenges in which we are taking part. Why else would 31-12-2017 be the last day of this many (twelve at this moment) challenges? So we are running till 25-12-2017 23:59:59 UTC has been reached.
