Dataman, you wanna set a price on that 80 gig hd? Is it ATA, EIDA, SATA? Jonathan, its an 80 MEG hard drive. Probably from one of IBM's first personal computers. Although as I remember the first release only had a 20 meg drive. Oh, you youngsters ... you have no idea where it all started. Glad you made it back! Fire up that monster machine and get to crunchin'. ![]() ![]() |

I can't believe my old eyes missed the MEG there! I remember my first computer was an Apple Quadra 650 with a 33 MHZ (not GHZ) processor and 8 megs of RAM but even that old thing had 230 megs of hd space! What hunk of junk did you pull an 80 meg hd out of? Although now that I think about it, I remember Apple IIes with no hard drive space that ran off those ludicrous 5 1/2 literally floppy disks!

Fire up that monster machine and get to crunchin'. ![]() Well, not to bring up the past, but my very first PC was the IBM Portable Personal Computer 5155 Model 68 introduced in 1984, which was a bit of a rip-off of the computer that started Compaq. It was an 8086 rig built on an "XT" chassis packed into a "sewing machine" cabinet with about a 5" monitor and two 5 1/4" floppy drives. It weighed in at about 30 "portable" pounds. Mine is with one of my sons and it still works! He has IBM DOS 2.0 and Multimate word processor. I think he may also have a VT100 terminal emulation package, but I don't think the Hayes 1200 bps modem is around anymore. He will also have a bit of a problem printing because the old IBM Proprinter is also long gone. He can, however, enjoy passing his hours playing "Liesure Suit Larry" on an amber monitor. I think he still has a bootleg copy of several action games like Centipede. I think there are also a couple boxes of 5 1/4 floppies. ![]() Not really a laptop, was it? Looking at the monitor, this one just got booted as the user just entered the date/time. |
