Re: Un-official Grid.org Refugee Transition Center.

Well, the first results are in... first points gathered...
BOINC is really very nice!

WCG gives me new energy on the crunching front... I´ve been reading the forum this morning and it all sounds very good. (no negative remarks to WCG whatsoever...)

Maybe 2 simple questions:

1. Up to now (read: during grid.org) I had multiple pc running the client with only 1 account. Is it better to create one account for each pc?

2. My main pc at home is a AMD64. It runs a 32 bit XP version. Is it better to upgrade that to 64 bit XP? (and is debian-AMD64 maybe an even better choice?)

Maybe 2 simple questions:

1. Up to now (read: during grid.org) I had multiple pc running the client with only 1 account. Is it better to create one account for each pc? Do you really need it if Device Manager > Device Statistics gives points per active device (default view is those of last 14 days)? Creating your own 'subteam' structure at WCG is only possible if you have become a registered WCG partner. Many colleges do that, so show as one member name, but have extra subteam statistics!

2. My main pc at home is a AMD64. It runs a 32 bit XP version. Is it better to upgrade that to 64 bit XP? (and is debian-AMD64 maybe an even better choice?) There is no benefit as all the sciences still compute in 32bit. Some claim that Linux is quicker, but that can only be because it may have less overhead than Windows. Most new projects start out later on Linux or Mac, so if wanting to participate with e.g. HPF2 with graphics, Windows is where it runs.

Re: Un-official Grid.org Refugee Transition Center.

I sympatize Courine...I felt the same way - in shock at the closure, and further, surprised myself at being so sad about grid.org shutting down.

For me personally, participating in the UD grid project gave me a sense of connection with other people, and satisfaction in the knowledge that I was doing something worthwhile.

I'm glad I found world community grid...I've already setup my PCs with the WCG/UD client.

Hello to all!

biggrin Re: Un-official Grid.org Refugee Transition Center.

So the Grid.org Doomsday is over. Got first results, same agent, same CPU score, it`s like I have moved to new place with my old good furniture and stuff, well, OK, it has different color, but from client side, it looks very familiar.

Hello to all!

Couldn't have said it better myself. While I'm still mad at the way grid.org went away with so little notice, I'm glad that I'm now able to participate in the WCG community!
