I have now been able to upgrade one of my servers. I retired the dual xeon 5650 and replaced it with a dual xeon E5-2665, a Dell T620. I got it up and running this afternoon so I do not yet have a full days results, but so far it seems to be doing just fine. I am only one of its power supplies as I usually do. This beast has two 1100 watt power supplies. I originally tried Velocity Linux on this machine, but even though Velocity loaded just fine, I found out it does not have BOINC in its repository. So I loaded Linux Mint 18 on it as I had a DVD image handy. I did try to boot this machine off of a USB, but could not get the BIOS to recognize the USB as a boot device. There probably is a way, but I could not find it in a timely manner. So, I went with the DVD. This should be a little more power efficient than the Xeon 5650 machine, a Dell R610. And it gives me an additional 8 threads. I paid a lot more for this machine than I usually do, but it was still a bargain as it was brand new. It even came configured with a factory install of Red Hat Server, which I am not currently using, but might try in the future.

Thanks for the tech update Sarge. I really enjoy hearing about the teams hardware. The guy I bought the machine from got it in an auction by some company that closed a field office. They had not even taken it out of the box. It came configured with only 1 cpu(low end Xeon 4 cores/4threads) and 4 gigs of memory. I had it upgraded to 2 cpu's and 16 gigs of memory. Cost me a little over $250. I thought it was a bargain. I told him to keep me in mind if he ran across any other machines that would be upgrades to what I have. Cheers

Nice find Joe. Keep me in mind if you find more of those. I shut down my Dell cruncher with the westmere hex in it. Crunching open pandemics took an hour more per wu than my AMD or my i7 4930K gaming cruncher.

Nice addition, Joe. Those high core count Xeons are getting very reasonable in price.

Nice addition, Joe. Those high core count Xeons are getting very reasonable in price. I know about how many machines I can support, so I am continually on the lookout for any machines I can get which are better than what I already have. When I spot something which is better and the price is what I think is good, I will pounce. What sometimes I don't understand is why a business would invest in this hardware and then either abandon it or let it go for a song. Their loss and my gain I guess. Cheers

Evidently, somewhere around 10:00 PM we had a power outage here. Knocked most of my systems off the air until this morning. From the clocks which needed to be reset, the outage only last a couple of minutes. When you have some machines which run just off the live USB, you need to re-install Boinc and manually re-connect to the project. So, I will be down about 50 to 60 days of production today.

Finally got my newest system back on line. I tried to re-install Linux Mint 18 on it, but it would only work in 640x480, which makes the BOINC windows so big you can not get to the bottom to save any new settings. I monkeyed around with it for too long and finally bit the bullet to install a newer version. In installed Mint 20 LMDE 64 bit and that did get me to the proper screen resolution. It is now back to full production.
