Sold the dell hex system. Surprised it took an hour more to crunch covid than my AMD and i7 4930. Contemplating getting a 12 core AMD to replace the hex. Surprised this motherboard came with only one fan hook up besides the cpu fan hookup. Running rock solid though. On par with my 4930K cruncher.

Surprised this motherboard came with only one fan hook up besides the cpu fan hookup. Running rock solid though. On par with my 4930K cruncher. So, how long do each of them take ? My Xeon 2665 takes anywhere from 3.7 to 4.2 hours, probably averaging about 4 hours or so. Not quite as quick as my I7 2600K (stock) which takes about 3.2 to 3.8 hours, but the Dell T620 with the dual Xeons is running 32 threads versus the I7 at at 8 threads. Both are several generations old, but still respectable performers. I am sure the newer chips are considerably faster. I hope you got a respectable price for the hex system as they still pack a punch. Cheers

I am sure the newer chips are considerably faster. Ryzen 5000 series chips are taking 1.5-2 hours for a Covid work unit. Quite happy with my 2 systems although no doubt they were more expensive to build, having new parts. |

Both of my current systems are on par with FlynRyan. The dell took a hour more. Both the Dell and the AMD running Ubuntu. My gaming rig (4930K) runs Win7 pro. Made a little cash on the sale.

So to make a long story short, the newest chips are about twice as fast as the systems from about 7 to 8 years ago roughly speaking. Impressive, and interesting.

I have now been able to upgrade one of my servers. I retired the dual xeon 5650 and replaced it with a dual xeon E5-2665, a Dell T620. Congrats Sgt.Joe on the new system and glad everything came back OK from the power outage you mentioned last week! Out of curiosity, if you'd be comfortable sharing, what have you been seeing in terms of results and points per day for the new dual xeon E5-2665 system and how much electricity does the system draw under load at the plug?Haha thanks! I'm more of a web surfer than a real surfer😁, and in Washington State. Glad to be on the team, really like how people talk about their setups and so on. Welcome SD surfer! (From the second-newest member of the team : ) I'm with you that I love the hardware specifics we sometimes get into here!My latest system is an Intel i7-10700F with 8 cores/16 threads. When running 24/7 when I'm not using it for anything else, it seems to produce ~75-80k PPD and returns ~135-145 OPN results per day. It looks like the average run-time of the OPN results are ~2.7-2.8 hours each. When the graphics card (a GeForce RTX 3060 Ti) is fully idled, the total system power draw at the plug is 101 watts. So it seems like this system is in the range of ~30,900-33,000 points per kWh of electricity used. I was pleasantly surprised that it wasn't further behind the efficiency numbers FlynRyan shared back in December for the AMD Zen3 5900x 12c/24t of ~35,800 points per kWh. I'd love to get one of those Zen3 chips sometime in the future (after the chip shortage and corresponding somewhat-inflated prices gets a little less crazy). |

Cheers When sandy bridge came out, intel moved the memory controller to the chip from what I remember. Would say anything above ivy bridge processors will give you a good return. AMD seems to be fairly good seeing what mine is doing. Looking at 12 core AMD, am seeing around $460 for the chip. I'll wait a bit hoping the price comes down a little but probably not for awhile with the shortage going on. If I can find a deal on any 12 core, intel or AMD, I will jump on it.

If you have installed the March patches, it might be worth a quick look at your own machines as this issue has been reducing my Windows 10 systems' output by ~8-12% since March 11/12th after I had installed the March patches and rebooted. Unfortunately I can't shift all of my Win10 systems to Linux so may look for a different AV/anti-malware solution if this continues... I'm starting to look at replacing my old bucket that runs the Core I7 Skylake, or at least put it on full time crunching duty and upgrade to a nice spiffy AMD as well. It's a shame they're backordered but oh well. Reading Sgt. Joe's reply to you, will also look at getting a Kill A Watt, want to get a real understanding about energy per point, etc. ----------------------------------------
