Re: Minnesota Crunchers

It looks like it took until March 16 to get back to full production. There was a couple of days which were full of pending validation, but that seems to have passed and there is now a close to normal amount of just a couple of pages. So far the Debian version of Linux Mint has proven to be trouble free with no glitches. Hopefully it stays that way. I think I still have back to Linux Mint 16 running on a system and it has not shown any problems. It is out of support, but the only thing running on it is WCG, so it can stay for the time being, but if I do need to upgrade it I think I will go with this newer version.
Cheers

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

Thanks for the tech update Sarge. I really enjoy hearing about the teams hardware.

Same. I've just brought a couple of Samsung S8s online and have 2 more on order. I'm hoping WCG continues to support projects that can run on
Android.

Glad to be of any service I can.
Let us know how those S8's work out.

I should have given a welcome to SD Surfer. I do wonder where he/she may find to actually surf in Minnesota. Wait for some big waves on Superior perhaps ? laughing

Haha thanks! I'm more of a web surfer than a real surfer😁, and in Washington State. Glad to be on the team, really like how people talk about their setups and so on.

About my S8s, I was running them flat out and now one of them has warped and the back is peeling off so I'm retiring that one, stepped the other one down to 80% so hopefully that one does better, got 2 more on the way and will try those at 80% as well.

These Android octacores are really helping me to beef up my contribution without much investment or expertise, as long as they work. Hopefully they will last years instead of days if I get the load right.

I recall in the somewhat distant past a thread with a discussion on overheating and battery problems with phone crunching. Since I don't use phones for that purpose, I did not pay that much attention. If I can find the relevant thread, I will post a link. You may be on the right track with going to 80 %.
I have never been to the State of Washington, but may get there someday. Might drive, or take the Empire Builder just to watch the scenery. Flying would be faster, but you would miss all the sights in between. Won't be going much of anywhere until this Covid business in under control.
Cheers

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

SD Surfer, were are you getting the S8? Is it a single board computer (SBC) or are they just some phones/tablets you repurposed?

I've been getting used Samsung S8 phones on Ebay for ~$110, I've made 2 orders of 2 each and the vendors vary as they seem to run out of lots. "Dealscaly" sent me my first order and they arrived well packaged and as advertised, my other order hasn't arrived yet.

I was so impressed with my first 2 S8s, the cost/runtime ratio was great until one of them showed signs of trouble @ 100% runtime crying .

Prior to that purchase, I was plugging all my mothballed Android phones and tablets into WCG, was really surprised with my Samsung S9 phone (octocore) that I became more interested in this type of crunching. I have an old S7 that is only a quadcore and gets very hot very quickly, so that's still unplugged as are some others that didn't impress. I've started out buying S8s because people want too much for the S9s.

I have to admit these Android octcocores have renewed my interest in WCG, for my tech level and interest they have been an easy and relatively affordable way to badge hunt while I explore options to replace my 5 year old PC.

I have some concerns about safety from overheating batteries and whatnot, so I'm not running them at 100% anymore but so far so good, I'll make a post if anything crazy happens.
