Re: Minnesota Crunchers

Congrats team! applause
With winter approaching, more computers will come on line. With my dual xeon, and my hex gaming rig, am now crunching 30 threads. Hoping amd will drop the price of that monster chip during the holidays coming up.
Anyone on our team crunching with that monster chip?

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

Seems pretty quiet out there. We had a slight power outage last night. Of course, that knocked everything out for me. I do not have any ups on anything. Luckily everything was able to come back on line without any corruption anywhere. I hope everyone had a nice thanksgiving (wherever you are, yes I know it is only a U.S. holiday). I used the warm weather yesterday to put my snowblower on. I may actually start to put up my Christmas lights now too. Just about 38F (3C) this morning so still pretty mild. Much better than last week.

Edit: That power outage caused two errors on one machine which caused about 8 hours worth of crunching to end up in pending validation status. It could have been worse. at least they will eventually get validated.
Cheers

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

Have a generator? I purchased one about 5 years ago when those straight line winds came through. Outage lasted 3 1/2 days. Learned a few years ago if your generator has a 220 socket and you have one in garage, just shut main breaker off, plug in cable to both sockets, fire up generator. Spreads load throughout house. Just have to watch what is on so you don’t pop breaker on generator. Mine is a max 5500 watts. Saved my bacon a few times.
Thanksgiving for us was Saturday so we could get all the kids here. Think my hearing is worst now. 7 grandkids screaming and crying. Good time though. Hope everyone’s turkey day went well. Stay safe folks.

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

No generator here. I have toyed with the idea for a number of years, but maybe it is time to actually do it. There are some nice looking deals out there. Maybe for the holidays.
Cheers

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

I picked mine up from northern tool. Their frame, honda engine. $1000 bucks but it runs flawless. Did get home depot big one but returned it 2 days later as it would not start. Found out online they had allot of problems with that model. Don't get that Chinese junk thats out there. Theirs cost are cheap for a reason. Would have liked to get a pure honda generator but they just cost to much. But they are the best. I got the second best. Just make sure you get one with a 220 hookup. If you have a 220 in your garage, works great hooking through that instead of running extension cords through the windows.

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

I had final exam for a course I am taking at St. Cloud State. I am glad to get out of the way. I think I did OK with it. Final grades aren't due for about 2 weeks so I am pretty sure it will be some time after Christmas when they are posted. I don't have doubt about passing the course, as I have a pretty solid "B" so far. It was a good course and gave me some more tools to use when I substitute teach. I will take the followup course during spring semester. The Professor already gave us the readings for that course. I have started them and I believe the next semester will test my brain more than this semester. The professor has a good teaching style and has generous office hours. That is why I am taking the professor next semester.
If the course is tougher, I will probably spend more time at school, so I will be shutting down my systems more often, so my production may suffer a bit. Unless, of course, I get a chance to upgrade any of my rigs.
Cheers

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

How's it feel to be in school with the teeny boppers? When I went back in 2007, felt weird to be around all those kids. Think I was the oldest one there. Was hoping AMD would have dropped the price of that monster 64 threaded beast. Would sell my dual hex system before I build another one though.
