Re: Minnesota Crunchers

Going from an I3 to an I7 is a nice jump. I would not go for the "K" version unless you were interested in overclocking. Besides, the 8700 is about 30 bucks cheaper than than 8700K. The high end I5's are not hyperthreaded so the work done by the I7 8700 which is hyperthreaded will be greater. The I5 8400 is cheaper by over $100 so I guess get what you can readily afford and don't worry too much about being on the bleeding edge of performance. I have one machine with an older model I7, an I7 2600K, with which I am very satisfied. I don' use it as a 24/7 machine, nor do I overclock it, but it does crunch just great in addition to handling a number of other uses I have for it. I probably have it on about 12-14 hours per day. It runs at about 50C (122F) under full load so it does run nice and cool.
Cheers

Agree with Joe. I like to stay on the front edge performance wise but my i7-2600k is also just humming along fine and its hard to get rid of it and upgrade.

I've had some systems mining crypto, but going to bring them back here for a while for March and the Spring time. Should be a nice contribution increase. Would be nice to get back into the top 100.

Always glad to have your full power back. Do you really make any money after the cost of electricity and equipment on any of the cryptocurrency mining ? Just curious. I have no intention of doing any of it, but I kind of follow what is going on in that market. I do see there are now over 100 different crypto projects available which will certainly diffuse all the mining efforts.
Cheers

Honestly its not profitable to mine crypto for most. Like you said, hardware and electric costs just as much as the profit you'll generate. The problem is, the more the currency is worth, the harder it becomes to mine due to the increased number of users mining, so your "share of the pie" becomes smaller.

The hope is that the crypto you generate will appreciate in value over months and years, and someday you'll be able to sell what you mined for a much larger profit than it was worth when you mined it, if that makes sense. Its a bettin' man's game, not for everyone.

Well, we could certainly tell you switched some machines back to WCG. Nice kick.
I see tonight they are closing schools all over the state. They must be figuring even if they got the kids to school in morning, the problem would be getting them home after school. Better safe than sorry I suppose. The latest I see for the St. Cloud area is 6-9 inches (15 to 23 cm) of heavy wet snow. The winds are up tonight so we will see what tomorrow brings.

That would be about an inch more than we got in St. Cloud. The bottom 2 inches of the snow is all slush because it was so warm when it started. That makes for a miserable time trying to shovel it or snow blow it. I got things shoveled out this morning. I blew snow this morning also but had to set the blower up about 2 inches to avoid plugging it with slush. That did well enough so I can get out of the driveway. Once it warms up again it will be a watery mess again as I have a gravel/dirt driveway. There is still some light snow falling yet this morning.

I just ran across an interesting article about the cost to mine Bitcoin in various countries around the world. You can find it here

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

Good info. It is a very expensive and wasteful process, crypto mining. It should almost be illegal, except in the case where you can do something good like WCG, if perhaps our ppd were worth something in dollars.

There are some good things from Bitcoin and the alternative coins, such as decentralization meaning a country can't just decide to print more of it or prevent transactions from one person to another, or tax it. You are free to do what you want with your "money".

Anyway the computing power is much better spent here. :)

I agree. I support the research to the extent I am financially able. I might as well use some of my disposable income to do something good.

That's to rich for my blood/pocket book. I'll stick to WCG in hopes to cure diseases.

How's it going team? Have an itch to build another dual processor cruncher. Never built a AMD system. Anyone know who is crunching with AMD EPYC processors?
