Re: Minnesota Crunchers

Just thought I would put up a summary of our point results from years past.
2005 2695
2006 114100
2007 38,658,108
2008 95,845,578
2009 222,036,671
2010 270,453,234
2011 317,276,018
2012 867,532,362
2013 1,155,037,480
2014 403,010,130
2015 352,531,157
2016 310,279,361
2017 410,699,847

As you can see it was in 2012 and 2013 when the GPU project Help Conquer Cancer was running. 2017 was still our best year on CPU only. Good crunching all and keep up the good work.
Cheers

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

Ahh those were the days back in '12 and '13. Surprised there hasn't been any GPU accelerated projects since. Perhaps its more of a headache for the techs, or no one has come up with a viable project. It's hard to believe as languages exist to help developers run projects on GPU (CUDA, Open CL, etc.) Maybe we'll see something in 2018.

Also heard the rumor of CPU slowdowns due to security problems and the required patches to fix them. Hope that doesn't put a damper on our efforts.

Anyway here's to another good year and whatever it brings. Peace.

got a AMD ThreadRipper 1950x tossed 32GB of RAM at it - need to get a new video card for it.

Congrats. That is one beast of a CPU for WCG and multi-threaded workloads.

I recently put together a Xeon system from used parts. Unfortunately found out after the fact that the motherboard doesn't have a PCIe-x16 slot, go figure! (its a workstation board). So I can't use it for my main rig because I need good graphics! I know there are x8 graphics cards out there and also external graphics cards, but not gonna mess with it. I'll keep my trusty i7-2600 for gaming and every day tasks for now.

Also tried Sgt Joe's idea of using a USB pen drive for a Linux boot drive for it and works just fine albeit a bit slow for install and stuff (I'm used to fast SSD's). Not a big deal for a dedicated cruncher though.

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

I dug my old ARM development board out of a drawer, installed Android, and got it crunching 4 cores. It has WiFi so it just runs without any keyboard, mouse, or screen. Just sitting on a desk plugged in crunching on the Android projects. It uses the old Galaxy S3 ARM processor. Its performance is not too shabby over the past few days now that it has stablized.

That should be a nice rig. Let us know how well it performs for you after you have had it running for a while.

Even though the there is a lack of graphics capability in that rig, with the workstation board and the Xeon you should have good 24/7 reliability. Let us know how well it does after a while.

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

This has turned into a beautiful day. It is about 29F(-2C) and the sun is out. It feels wonderful. I took the dog for a walk and thoroughly enjoyed the sun and the warmth.

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

Make sure you focus the Vikings angst on harder crunching... I bumped my CPU % up a few for the next couple of days to help "walk it off".

I wish I could bump up my crunchers, I always have all of them running at 100%. I like the Vikings, but I don't like all the hype that goes with them. If there was less hype by the all the media outlets maybe people would be less disappointed when the team lost. Some people need to put the team winning or losing a game into some realistic perspective. I hope your angst is OK.

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

Minnesota should not have built a new stadium until they won a super bowl and earned it. Should have let them move when talked about 5 years ago. Typical vikings though. Always choke when the pressure is on. I gave up on the NFL in general years ago. Watch hockey when I get a chance. Pretty cool when a player gets face planted on the glass.
