In other news, AMD's new Ryzen CPU's are available for Pre-order now with a launch date of March 2. Microcenter has them for $499 for a 8 core/ 16 thread 4.0 ghz part. 95 watt TDP so pretty efficient. Of course you'd need a new AM4 motherboard and DDR4 RAM as well. Still a hefty price but it's supposed to compete with or best Intel's $1,000 CPU's According to the leaked price lists, it looks like the 1700 (not 1700X) priced at $329 might be a better value for only a marginal performance hit. I have not seen any benchmarks for the top end 1800X leaked yet, so who knows. Cheers

I started the second R610 today. The two R10's together take 500 watts which is not too bad for 48 threads. I did take some of the memory sticks out of both of them. In the one I left two 8 gig sticks and in the other one I left four 2 gig sticks. Even at 24 threads, it is not approaching using all the memory in the one with 8 gigs left. It looks like I should get about 16000 BOINC points per day running SCC. I set the second one to MCM1 and I will see in a couple of days how well that one does. My two Dell 2950's and one 1950 are now going into retirement even though they still work just fine. More later.
----------------------------------------Edit: I got a little bit of a bonus. One of the R610's has twin X5650's and the other one has twin x5670's. I had thought they would both have x5650's. Cheers

Looks like I'll be getting a 5 year on both SCC and HSTB within a week of each other, thanks to the new influx of work for the latter.
Was thinking to trade my i7-2600k for one of those new AMD CPUs but will hold off for now. The Intel rig still runs great after all these years at 4 ghz. |

I must have had a some type of power glitch or internet glitch with my servers in the shed. Two out of the three of them threw a bunch of errors and invalids overnight. One rig was running FAAH2 and most of the units went invalid which makes me think it was an internet problem, because that is what happens when the trickles are blocked. All seems fine now as a some additional ones have since validated. One other one threw a bunch of errors with the message it could not get some files, but now seems to be running well. The third one had no problems. Maybe it never tried to connect when the problem occurred.

Really not happy today. There is something really funny going on. I needed to call a service company to come out and fix something. I had contacted them last week and set up today so I could be here when they came. When they had not shown up by early afternoon, I called. I got a random lady in the same small town. I thought I had mis-dialed so I called again dialing very carefully. Same lady. Ok, I thought I would try the 800 number for the business. Same result again. So I thought I would try the 800 number from my landline, thinking there was a problem with the cell phone provider. Same lady. I apologized profusely for bothering her and said I would call the telephone company next and ask them what was happening. I get to the service desk at the phone company and explain the problem and ask them to call the business. The service tech at the telephone company tries to call the business and gets the same poor lady I had already bothered several times. He agrees there is a problem, but he does not know what it is and does not know when it will get fixed, nor does he have any alternate phone numbers for the business. So I guess I will try again tomorrow and see if I can get this business out to fix my original problem, if I can get a hold of them.
----------------------------------------On top of this, my router hung overnight and some of my machines ran dry before I noticed and rebooted that little stinker. Tomorrow will be better. Cheers
