Re: Minnesota Crunchers

We live in interesting times. I am not sure what to make of the man in charge at the moment. Some of what he does infuriates me and some I like. He would be better if he stayed off of Twitter.
Cheers

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

He needs to be a little more presidential and get on with his promises and quit acting like a little kids who has his toys taken away for being bad. But it doesn't help when you have the whining democrats stirring the pot with marches and a news media cracking him on every turn. Us republicans never did anything remote when Obama was elected and re elected like what folks are doing now. Just nuts. Same partisan politic BS and nothing gets done. Just finger pointing. Lets hope things settle down and the work thats needed gets done and we move on as a nation.

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

Well, I got the two Dell R610's. They cost me a little more than I originally thought. I got them for $75 apiece. One has 48g of memory and the other 24g, which is way more than I need. I will probably get them fired up in the next day or so and see what they will do. I think they have Xeon x5650's in them, but I will find out when I get them running. Then I will get rid of some of the older ones.
Cheers

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

Nice. I built a dually (5650) with them and crunched a bit before selling it. Not to bad of a cruncher. Single or duallies?

Both have dual processors.

Very nice. So we should be seeing a significant increase from your contribution, assuming the electricity cost to keep them running isn't prohibitive...

I threw together a temporary cruncher to help work on the new cancer project from cheap parts off ebay.

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

I was doing some serious crunching when I had 2 dually crunching rigs running but sure eats the electric bill. Be nice if they brought back crunching with a gpu.

Yes , my electric bill has already been higher than I would like it. I did get the first of the R610's up and running. The preliminary results so far look to be about 30 to 33 boinc points per hour per work unit, running SCC. It is running two 6 core hyperthreaded X5650's for a total of 24 threads. Initially I had it on the same circuit as two of my 8 cores, but I popped a breaker so it is now on a separate circuit. One or both of the 8 cores will be retired when they run out their cache. I am going to put my Kill-a Watt meter on the R610 later on and see just what the power draw is. I am guessing the 24 threads will be less power draw than the two 8 core systems combined. I do have it running off of a 16gb flash drive so I am sure that helps a little. I may also pull 5 of the 6 memory sticks and just run with 8gb of memory, if I can.. More info later.
Cheers

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

In other news, AMD's new Ryzen CPU's are available for Pre-order now with a launch date of March 2. Microcenter has them for $499 for a 8 core/ 16 thread 4.0 ghz part. 95 watt TDP so pretty efficient. Of course you'd need a new AM4 motherboard and DDR4 RAM as well.

Still a hefty price but it's supposed to compete with or best Intel's $1,000 CPU's
