Re: Minnesota Crunchers

The company I work for blocked WCG at the firewall. Looks like we are going to take a big hit in the point/hours/WUs from here on out. angry
8 or 9 members of our team works there and had permission to run it on there personal PCs.

I am guessing it was not the IT Dept. that made the decision. Really too bad. Any chance the powers that be that did make the decision would ever change their mind ? If nothing bad had happened so far, why would they think it needed to be blocked ? I don't suppose there is a public Wi-Fi spot close enough so you could bypass ? sad sad

Our IT manager caught someone loading boinc on one of our Linux servers. I will try to change the mind of management but I think it's over. I will probably drop from 60 to 80K in point per day to a 1000 or less a day. Still calculating it.

Can you just run an HTTP or SOCKS proxy on your home computer, and then tunnel through that from work?

Everything on the internet here at work requires going through the corporate HTTP proxy, however WCG works just great through that.

They don't use proxy servers they use content/protocol filtering firewalls. You can't even surf to a site that has the word proxy on it. Public proxy servers are are also blocked. I would need to vpn through to somewhere. Not worth it. Don't know if I will be working there very long anyway. angry

I've been told this was a final decision. No more discussions.

Run an HTTP proxy on your home computer and address it by IP. The traffic would look like any other HTTP (web) traffic. Unless they use a huge whitelist and block everything else, this should work.
