Re: The FireFox Add-On Extension Thread

Who has not got Read it Later, which does what it says, allowing to quick bookmark a webpage and simply clicking on the RIL icon to get a list of stuff you'd want to catch up on in a quieter moment [research something maybe], Now added Easy Read, which sublimes the all too distracting hyperlinks integrated in text.

Re: The FireFox Add-On Extension Thread

Dumped probably 1/4 of all the add-ons I had due performance impact [on WCG's Recent Threads page and Sign-out redirect to home page only btw] through Firefox 13.0.1, and looked for some alternatives that would not. This one Location Bar Enhancer does not, and returns the long lost preferred breadcrumb structure to the address/location bar. Want to go back one or more steps in an address path... just click the element, as what Linux Nautilus for instance offers.

enjoy

P.S. The performance impairing add-ons [in particular combinations], which as said only seem to affect WCG forum browsing of certain pages... why on earth is that?:

BOINCstats
All-In-One Sidebar (author knows and claimed it was fixed)
Bookmark Fav Icon Changer
Caffeine Security (some rate this more as a risk than a security enhancer)
Easy Read
Fox Splitter (sob as it allowed to view 2 or more tabs at the same time)
FoxTab 1.4.4
Nightly Tester Tools
Remove it Permanently (for instance if you don't want to see the sig graphics of members... loading was faster than blocking would you believe)
Text Formatting Toolbar (Easy BBcode applying to format posts quickly]
Scribefire Next 4.0 (deep sob) Redemption & Joy... again a certain add-on combo caused it to be obstructive. Full speed now.

Re: The FireFox Add-On Extension Thread

This one may be of interest to the privacy aware and the performance conscious: Cache Status https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/cache-status/ It gives status bar information on disk and ram cached data volume and comes with a button to clear either or all instantly. This was the purpose add-on that did not interfere with some other such as Smartest Bookmark bar [would no longer unhide]. Running FF 13.0.1 now.

Anyone running Private Browser session frequently / always... don't bother. The data gets erased soon as you return to normal browsing or exit Firefox. I hardly use this feature.

Re: The FireFox Add-On Extension Thread

Time to do another tip on add-ons. Few know that if you type about:memory in the address bar, Firefox will generate a very detailed memory usage page of everything FF is hogging, but few can read that without taking big effort. To make is simpler, someone developed a condensed memory report with bars for each main FF component called about:addons-memory. When installed just type the name of the extension in the address bar and voila. To my surprise, with v19.02 'only' 81MB and 5 tabs open, and 6 tab groups in background [Linux 13.04]. How to get to groups...Ctrl-Shft-E.

Get it here: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addo...s-memory/?src=userprofile

It's a restartless add-on... works instantly.

Enjoy

http://newzon.net/

Compare prices for Amazon products while shopping at Newegg.
NewZon is FREE on Mozilla's official Firefox add-on site.
Shopping at Newegg™ has been a staple for the computer enthusiast for years, and comparison shopping those same exact products at Amazon™ can sometimes be difficult. Built with the computer hardware enthusiast in mind, our NewZon™ extension for Chrome and Firefox makes comparison shopping products at Amazon while at Newegg very simple. NewZon can accomplish this in several ways, while keeping your privacy and browsing experience at the forefront.
NewZon will add an accessible NewZon button to your browser that will allow you to search for the product at Amazon. This can easily be turned off by the user at any time in the NewZon extension options found by right clicking the [N]™ icon (mentioned below).

Re: The FireFox Add-On Extension Thread

Three more, particularly aimed at the Ubuntu Unity interface users [yes I think it's superior to W8/Metro-Modern].

1) UnityFox which adds a download counter to the Firefox icon on the left hand launchbar
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/unityfox/?src=userprofile (It's another one that does not require you to restart Firefox.
2) Location Bar Enhancer, previously fell out of grace with me due incompatibilities with other must have extensions, but it's working again, and low and behold, yet another "Restartless" add-on.
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/ui-enhancer/?src=ss
Get your addressbar shown in nice bread-crumbs style [like Nautilus can have too]. Click on a bread-crumb address segment and you get transported to the location up in the address... to me a major navigation enhancer.
3) And if you have to restart for whatever reason there's the "restartless" restart add-on:
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/restartless-restart/?src=ss

All from the official Mozilla add-ons/extension website... practically zero risk someone sneaks you a little Trojan :O (Yes a few have been used to act as a vehicle to pass you a keylogger and other assorted stealing your data activities, so be sure to know you get them from a trusted location!).

Re: The FireFox Add-On Extension Thread

Certainly an interesting Add-On, which Mozilla in another place in Firefox actually lists as 'Extensions' for a reason I've not researched [legacy I suppose], an 'add-on' that makes fonts on all sites the same you want it to be: No Small Text. Worked, but rendered by Smartest Bookmarks Bar [a must to me], inoperable. Wrote a brief review for the maker, so maybe he'll fixes it in his next update. for now reverted to NoSquint which allows storage on a per-sitre bases of zoom setting for text and graphics separately. Got WCG at 110% for text. Graphics at 100%, else small distortions develop such as on the badges.:(

Re: The FireFox Add-On Extension Thread

If you're a fan of retro computing like me then you could try the Overbiteff extension.

This adds support for the Gopher protocol back into Firefox. Gopher was "the web" before Sir Tim Berners-Lee actually invented the WWW.

Or if you have a linux machine most distros have a gopher client available in the package manager that you can run straight from the command line.

Have Fun!

Re: The FireFox Add-On Extension Thread

I guess I can try some of the add-ons now that I've upgraded to v12 (and I know it's not the latest! biggrin ).

Re: The FireFox Add-On Extension Thread

So you are offline / out of hotspot reach and fire up the webbrowser to lookup a previous visited page still in cache and you of course get an error / blank because FF is not good at auto-switching to offline mode. Get "Work Offline" and put the switch icon next to the address-bar: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/work-offline/?src=userprofile . If off-line at startup, the browser shows a pop-up right bottom to say that you're working off-line for your cue.
