Re: Eat, Drink, and be Crunching (Team HomeBrewers Welcomes You)

.......

As for our team stats, we did a bit better today, which pushed us into #112, and we should pass Spain to move to #111 in two days.

Thanks.

Bill Velek

So, finally the brewers will take their rightful place as "better than Spain"

Maybe if I can personally manage some success here in Arkansas, then there will be more interest. By the way, Fred, do you think you could provide a link to www.2plus2is4.com on our official team website when you get a chance. Still working on my site to smooth out some wrinkles. Takes a lot of time.

Of course, Bill. If you want to give me an overview paragraph, I'll put the full text plus link in an insert box.

Getting people's attention these days is very hard. Everyone is running so fast just trying to either keep up or get ahead that anything not having an immediate impact tends to get pushed off. If you shoot 10 girls in a schoolhouse, you get a lot of attention. If you show how to make 10 girls better citizens by schooling, you get ignored.

Don't be discouraged, you won't reach 90% of your fellow citizens. It's always been that way, and it continues to be, despite the best efforts of our laws to lower everyone to the "lowest common denominator" in schooling, examinations, job requirements or qualifications.

Ten percent of our nation owns most of the wealth and power, just like it's always been (as in Europe and everywhere else). The remainder are slaves, just like we've always been - in this case, not servants of masters, or slaves on a plantation, but slaves to money, to a culture that says not only should we all have it all, but we should have it RIGHT NOW, so go out and buy it RIGHT NOW and put in on your credit, we'll loan you all you can handle and then more. Our culture has been taught to "look down on" people who don't keep buying new things, adding to the peer pressure (fit in or be excluded - and it's uncomfortable being the outsider)

The more children we produce, the more handles the market has to grab on to, since children can be taught to be the ultimate consumer before they ever get a chance to know better. Attempting to reverse the trend in children is an heroic effort, and every success gives the child a chance at freedom from blind consumerism. That's the only change in American society and modern society versus the old "caste" systems: Anyone has a chance to be free. They just need to be taught to see clearly.

Thanks, Fred. I'll get something prepared pronto. Right now I'm in the middle of brewing an IPA, one of my favorites. Got a very late start, but I had been planning this and then ran into some other things I had to take care of ... like my central heating unit wasn't working, so I had to fix that first. <sigh> Dadgum priorities that mess up a good brewing day. crying

Will get back when I can -- probably tomorrow.

Cheers.

IPAs are definitely tasty, good luck on your brewing!
Sorry to hear about the breaking equipment. That's always a pain (and there's always more work than expected).

Cheers

Re: Eat, Drink, and be Crunching (Team HomeBrewers Welcomes You)

Good morning everyone. Finally have a little time to post and I'll cover a few things.

First, how is this for a cover paragraph, Fred.
"Recruitment to grid-computing projects is handicapped by widespread apathy, suspicion, and mistrust; these are caused primarily by public ignorance and misunderstanding. Project '2 plus 2 is 4' is a lobbying effort to have laws passed to require that our schools teach our children about grid-computing -- how safe and secure it is and of the many interesting ways it can be used to help mankind. With some education and encouragement to become better citizens by helping the grid, we should see a much quicker growth in membership in all grid projects."

Second, I did a parti-gyle on Saturday. I brewed my IPA, and then I re-sparged and used my last runnings to make a lawnmower beer; hope I didn't over-sparge, but we'll see in a few weeks. Both are fermenting away nicely now.

Third, our team is still doing well, and made a great posting last night with 80,509 to move us to #109; we could make #108 tonight, or will for sure by tomorrow. It's always good to see those large spikes because they are needed to bring our averages up high enough to meet our goal. We have just 30 more postings until our first birthday. I figure that when we can pass team "USA -- Grid Lock", then we will make it into the Top-100 for sure; they are #95 right now with 13,180,326 points and averaging only 2,259 for the past two weeks and only 2,138 this past week. Using the higher average, that should give them 13,248,096 total, so basically we need to reach 13,250,000 which will get us across the line by the skin of our teeth. That means we have 30 days to post 2,091,635 points, which is 69,721 per day. Our daily average for the past 14 days is 72,683 and we've actually improved because our average for the past 7 days is 74,964.

The other current Top-100 teams that we will also pass in the process are: "Italian grid", "Champlain College", and "IBM - BeNeLux" -- none of which will be able to remain ahead of us even if they continually post their hightest post from the past two weeks. And even if we only pass three of the four, we still stand a good chance of making it into the Top-100.

Enough with the stats. I've made a few refinements to my main site -- www.velek.com -- including adding a link to a very good podcast by Dr. David Foran.

Well, I've taken enough of everyone's time.

Cheers.

Re: Eat, Drink, and be Crunching (Team HomeBrewers Welcomes You)

Here is a new estimate, based on the average daily postings for all concerned teams for the past week, and the number of days that it should therefore take the HomeBrewers to pass that team:

Bush Non-Supporters United -- 4
BOINC Synergy -- 7
IBM Grid Team -- 5
GrenouilleTeamFrance -- 8
IBM Toronto Software Lab -- 8
China Grid Team -- 18
IBM - BeNeLux -- 17
Champlain College -- 13
Italian Grid -- 22
USA Grid Lock -- 26

Since we are ranked #108, then we should pass the 8th team -- China Grid Team -- in just 18 days to finally reach the Top-100, 9 days before our first birthday, and on our birthday we should actually be ranked #98. That is assuming that all teams continue this past week's performance over the next four weeks. Anyway, FANTASTIC EFFORT, team. We have done very well. cool

And please don't forget to support www.2plus2is4.com.

Cheers.
