Re: Eat, Drink, and be Crunching (Team HomeBrewers Welcomes You)

For some reason, our record of daily points is beginning to look like a rollercoaster -- up and down quite a bit. I don't know what is causing that, but as long as we can at least keep our average up (which is 67,064/day this past week), then we will still reach our goal of #100 by our anniversary -- most likely ON our anniversary.

Based on the averages for the past seven days for each of the following teams, I project points and position on 11/21/06 as follows:

#99 -- China Grid Team -- 13,166,689 -- now #104
#100 -- HomeBrewers -- 13,094,967 -- now #120
#101 -- Italian grid -- 13,025,767 -- now #95
#102 -- IBM - BeNeLux -- 13,013,531 -- now #101
#103 -- BOINC Synergy -- 12,993,301 -- now #107
#104 -- Champlain College -- 12,461,224 -- now #97
#105 -- IBM Toronto Software Lab -- 12,401,430 -- now #100
#106 -- Grenouille TeamFrance -- 12,206,381 -- now #99

As we can see, we will be passing four teams currently in the Top-100, but China Grid, GEG.uOttawa.ca, and Czech_National_Team will all take the other three spots in the Top-100 ahead of us.

Of course, that can change dramatically in the coming weeks, and we can see how close the race is: we'll be just 71,722 points behind China Grid (1,464 points per day), and only 69,200 points ahead of Italian Grid (1,413 points per day). Therefore, if we could just recruit another couple of members very soon, then we should stand an excellent chance of winning.

Cheers.

I think the correct link should be:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/HomeBrewersTeam/

Strange that I took it from the browser and pasted it, but it didn't work.

In any case, it's been changed to the suggested url.

thanks Dave

Re: Eat, Drink, and be Crunching (Team HomeBrewers Welcomes You)

Thanks Bill, I will make the changes to the web site.

I'll "recruit" a power supply to replace the one I stole from myself to put in a customer's machine (no he wasn't interested in joining WCG - I asked!) and finally put "my" machine online after months of having parts borrowed from it.

I've also got an older Athlon machine (1600+?) I just got back which I'll try putting online to see if it gets any performance worth the electricity.

Hi V_R!

Well, back to coding...

Re: Eat, Drink, and be Crunching (Team HomeBrewers Welcomes You)

Well, HomeBrewers, as of tonight we are ranked #118, and the Top-100 is getting mighty close. If we can achieve our recent average performance, we should not only move into #117 tomorrow night, but also pass 10 million points. I'll have to have a special beer to celebrate. biggrin

Thank you to everyone for your commitment to this great cause.

Cheers.

They look fine to me; you need to quit drinking BudMillCoors; that stuff will blind you wink ... and learn to homebrew. cool

Your new "rig" -- do you buy all the parts separately -- case, power supply, motherboard, etc. -- and then assemble them? If so, what are the advantages other than that you obviously have a custom system? Is it expensive to use that approach?

Cheers.

Yeah, i buy the parts generally from the same place to save on the shipping costs. I got the bits from a uk onlne etailer called Overclockers UK

It does not always come out cheaper than buying a pc from say pcworld but the quality of parts is MY choice not theirs! You see most shop bought pc's cut corners somewhere maybe the motherboard or RAM because they use cheap crap to keep the cost down and profits up.

If your interested, This is a link to my 'home forum' and the thread about it. smile

I'd suggest you check out www.NewEgg.com here in the US. I get just about all of my parts from them. The biggest challenge there is deciding which of the 400 of each kind of part to buy so that they make the fastest systems. If you are interested in a computer, I can (or I'm sure V_R can) suggest a list of components which are usually considered "most reliable" or "best deals". I was just noticing they are selling an AMD 4800+ dual core processor for $230 on special, which makes a basic system about $450 with shipping, and a top end probably about double that. There's also an Intel Presler core Dual 3.4 (with the 2MB cache per core, the only way to go with an Intel chip) for $186.

I just bought my power supply from them for $20 (400w from a respectable company) - compare that to $89 at Best Buy. You have to watch it, though, Newegg also sells a "fancy" one for $149 which isn't worth the money.

I'm waiting for the Christmas shakeout, with the Intel Conroe series processors ("Core Duo" is the marketing name) hitting the market in full force, we'll see some dropping prices on the older technology.

Cheers
