Re: Eat, Drink, and be Crunching (Team HomeBrewers Welcomes You)

Hello, everyone. As it's said: "All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy", so I figure I ought to post something about homebrewing for a change. On Tuesday I brewed two batches of beer -- an American Amber and an Oatmeal Stout. They're fermenting right now. I also bottled an IPA and a 'lawnmower' beer (second runnings from the IPA and I used some old hops that I wanted to get rid of). The IPA tasted pretty good for uncarbonated beer, but the lawnmower beer is nothing to brag about; still, for an after thought that was just thrown together, it'll be good enough (I'll no doubt enjoy it as much as a commercial beer).

Well, that's enough to bump us to the top again, and it's thundernig outside so I'd better get this posted before the power goes out suddenly.

Cheers.

Well folks, it looks like it's time to throw in the old towel. There's no way we can push to the top 100 by your birthday, so Gromit and I will be heading back to our home teams.

Thanks for the beer and the great recipes. I'll be trying some of them out before too long. smile

Keep in touch.

Re: Eat, Drink, and be Crunching (Team HomeBrewers Welcomes You)

Thanks for all your help, Dick_Dastardly and Gromit. We made a good run at it, but the handwriting is on the wall. We came close and should get closer, and if it weren't for Fred's misfortune we would have succeeded. And even with his computer problems, we still would have made it if it weren't for the greatly improved performance of the three teams that came up and passed us from behind. But that's great, because what we really want to see is more crunching for mankind, even if it is from our competition. We can still be very proud of our team, though. Thank you to everyone.

We are currently #104 and should make it to #103 for sure, and depending upon how much we lose with the departure of Dick and Gromit, we might still make it to #102. Here are the teams we could still possibly pass, based on points averages for the past one week:

IBM - BeNeLux - now ahead by 44,353 with an average of 31,261 points/day. We need to average 36,806 to pass them by our birthday, which we should be able to do.

China Grid Team -- now ahead by 136,836 with an average of 37,837 points/day. We need to average 54,942 to pass them, but I think we averaged only 50,538 without DD and Gromit, so that looks doubtful unless we manage a big boast somewhere along the line; maybe Fred will be able to get back in time for just the last few days.

Italian grid -- now ahead by 362,421 with an average of 24,815 points/day. We need to average 70,119 which looks nearly impossible at this point.

Cheers.

Yikes!! Maybe not; we posted only 35,004 last night. I hope that was just a VERY bad day. Anyway, we can see how great of a difference Dick_Dastardly and Gromit were making. We thank them again for their contributions.

Hang in there, team. Let's at least beat BeNeLux. cool

Cheers.

Re: Eat, Drink, and be Crunching (Team HomeBrewers Welcomes You)

Well, looks like we are holding steady at #104.

Bill,
I did some brewing last week as well. One beer, a Schwartzbier; transferred some meads (to make room), one plain and one plum; and brewed up a new batch of Cyser (Apple Mead). The Cyser from last year was so good I don't want to run out!

Thanks to Gromit and Dirk_Dastardly for the help!

Fred,
Did you get a chance to do any sight seeing while you were in SA? Seems like when ever I am on a business trip I am such a hurry to get things done and get back home that fun never fits in!

Dave

Re: Eat, Drink, and be Crunching (Team HomeBrewers Welcomes You)

Dave, the only Schwartzbier I've ever had is one made at Vino's -- a brewpub in Little Rock. I've had it a few times, but can't remember much about it except that it is very dark, naturally.

I've been busy brewing, too. This past weekend I bottled two batches and also brewed two batches. What a lot of work. I bottled a batch of Oatmeal Stout and a batch of American Amber; I brewed a batch of Sierra Nevade Pale Ale (clone), and a batch of Brown Ale. Went to a party on Sunday and took half a case of IPA and half a case of what I call Pacific Northwest Pale Ale -- actually, it was just the second runnings from the IPA (partygyle) that I juiced up a bit with sugar and used Cascade Hops which I understand are very popular in the Pacific Northwest (ergo the name I gave it). Considering the use of table sugar and some rather old hops, it actually came out very nice. Both beers met with grand approval at the party. Now I'm anxious to compare my P.Nw.Pale Ale with the Sierra Nevada, because I think they will be somewhat similar, although I didn't add as much stuff as in the Sierra Nevada.

By the way, I made a fresh starter for the batches I just brewed, but due to the late hour I really didn't feel like cleaning the two carboys I had just drained, so I dumped the fresh batches in on top of the yeast patties -- and then added the starter, too, since I had already made it. I normally wouldn't use a starter if using a patty. What an explosive fermentation I'm having now. Everything was bubbling nicely and then the next thing I knew I was having to clean krauesen off of the ceiling where one carboy blew the air lock off. Both carboys are now sitting in pans with foam cascading down the sides. I just hope I don't lose too much beer. crying

As for our team, I've lost all the wind out of my sails. Still crunching, what little I'm able to contribute, but have shifted my focus to my other project, below.

Keep up the crunching and the brewing. cool

Re: Eat, Drink, and be Crunching (Team HomeBrewers Welcomes You)

Well, I may as well make a belated post to acknowledge that our team did NOT reach its goal of Top-100 by our 1st birthday, and, in fact, we are now drifting in the opposite direction. As the creator and original captain of this team, I am still very proud of what we have accomplished; we managed to reach #104, and got very close to #103 before the trend reversed. Tremendous credit and thanks goes to our current captain, Fred B, who contributed perhaps as much as half of our points (I'm too tired to check the stats right now, but it was a LOT). He also picked up the banner when I was absent for awhile, and I do appreciate all that he has done, such as setting up a website for our team. Unfortunately, poor Fred ran into some problems at a time when he couldn't do anything about it, and he has expressed much regret over that. Well, Fred, don't worry about it, friend, because things happen, and you have pulled far more than your weight. I was glad to turn over the position of captain to you, because you definitely deserved it, and I have no regrets about that. In fact, I am posting this as an encouragement to you to carry on, since we haven't heard from you lately (I know; you are out of country), ... and especially since I might very well be scarce around these parts myself. If it turns out that you can't manage, or are no longer interested in serving as team captain, I think that Dave the Brewer is a good choice to take over, if he is interested. (For what it's worth to the WCG, I nominate Dave if Fred can't be contacted and the admins deem the position vacant.) In any event, if I do decide to leave the WCG forums, please be assured that I will still remain a member of this team via BOINC, which will permit me to split/share my crunching with our team and any other project I join. Of course, my crunching contribution is fairly minimal, but it's the thought that counts, isn't it? smile Anyway, "HAPPY THANKSGIVING" to all of you (I know; some of you are not from the U.S. and therefore don't celebrate the holiday, so "PEACE BE WITH YOU").

Cheers, and keep on brewing.

I read this and thought to myself...it's time to get this team into the top 100 and maybe bring that smile back to billvelek's face.
