Re: WCG web site clinic

Whoever has the FTP account is the person who can publish to the website and make changes to it. I could offer out more than 1 FTP account it's all a matter of trust and working together on the same source code

At this point in time there seems to be only 2 people interested in publishing original pieces: Didactylos and myself. Depriens has offered to translate original works into Dutch. I propose the following scheme or something similar.

Give Didactylos and me FTP privilege to the website's root. We'll work out between us what gets put in that folder. We'll put a link to the Dutch files on the home page. Dutch files will all be kept in a different folder. Depriens will have password to the Dutch but not the original English. Didactylos and I will not have password to the Dutch. That way 3 can work together with little chance that 1 can accidentally over-write or link to files by accidentally typing in the wrong path.

On the other hand, I would not mind just attching my files to 1 project manager who then handles the actual publication. Whatever the others want is fine with me.

(I could make regular backups wink)

With a bit more time and effort I could make it truely wikiable (if there is such a word) at some point in the future. But let's make the basic content fixed first and work the wiki through a suggestions type mechanism (A Blog)

Lets hope it works its way into the DNS system thro tonite

Backups are always necessary but anything that reduces the need to rely on backups or restore from backups is a good thing biggrin

MediaWiki looks like a nice way of allowing many to contribute. I had never heard of it until Didactylos mentioned it so I honestly don't know much about it. Just did a quick read on it prior to this post, that's all.

Re: WCG web site clinic

It was developed for wikipedia. It's not a trivial install, though.

However, I think a couple of my fellow UFies are up to speed on it.

Re: WCG web site clinic

I like the idea of having lots of people contribute but I don't know if the wikki model as exemplified by Wikipedia serves the purpose. I think wikki is good when trying to build an encyclopedia of knowledge for the world and the ultimate goal is to assemble all knowledge.

I believe our goals are much simpler. Our focus is WCG so our topics are fairly limited. I think a traditional website will achieve our goals with the least amount of work and hassle.

Now, there is the issue of who decides what material gets published on the site. There the wikki model excels, no doubt about it. It allows full peer review and voting. That's all good stuff but if we need an arbitrator to decide whether material is factual or we have WCG itself.

So we're left with rejecting/accepting articles on the basis of style, grammar, clarity of expression, etc. No problem. If nobody else want to be the editor/publisher then I'll do it and deal with whatever flak I get for accepting some articles while rejecting others. A better way would be to have a committee of 3 (small and no ties) to review submissions but we may not get 3 volunteers to accept the job.

Re: WCG web site clinic

www.wcgwiki.org --> If you can read this then the World Community Grid WIKI site is up and running :-)) cool cool

Should I wait with translating until Dagorath's page is completely finished? I guess I should, because translating the final version will be easier to keep in the same layout.

And it will probably take a while before I have finished the translation, of course I would like some others to check the translation for errors before I submit it.
Further I think it would be the easiest if one person does all the upload work, especially since I don't know _anything_ about HTML or websites. blushing So it would be easiest to submit it in plain text or something so somebody can put it into the right order to upload.

Re: WCG web site clinic

Okay, that's bad news. Hopefully he will return soon so we can continue with this great initiative.

Re: WCG web site clinic

Hi Depriens

So far you are the only person to navigate the DNS servers of the net to find www.wcgwiki.org even I can't reach it yet

DNS is one of the great idea's of the net but very frustrating waiting for that info to cascade through all the servers.

And now a brief interlude until normal service is resumed and we get on promoting this great project.

Are we at 200K yet?
