Follow Internet Explorer Proxy settings option
I think it would be good to have an option to get WCG to follow the proxy settings set in Internet explorer. I'm in locations with and without proxy servers on a regular basis and need to change settings in WCG all the time, while the Internet explorer settings are set automatically already by IBM Access Connections Thanks, Rene |

Also, IE is not a reliable way of detecting network proxy settings. Instead, if this could be implemented, we would need to allow the proxy settings to be set by the network connection tool (in your case IBM Access Connections), just like you set other applications when you connect with it.

How about supporting unattended installs? We have a lot of PC's (100+) that are supplied with an OS image over the network regularly. It is very time consuming to install WC agent on al those manually and the agent gets wiped every time a new platform is installed.

Joost Moonen (nl59056) The current install package from United Devices does not support this, but it is something we're looking into.

I can't remember if this was suggested somewhere in this thread, but today I noticed that an update to UD.exe caused the firewall on that mostly unattended PC to wait for about a week for someone to allow it to access the net and get a new work unit, so that cost me a week's CPU time. :(
----------------------------------------i used to pay attention to the agent but now i'm down to one machine and I don't get to it very often. (had to deinstall from my laptop for heat) Some sort of notification/subscription would be useful for cases when updates are going to cause firewalls to halt the agent. I see the thread about the update in the other forum, but I haven't been checking the forums lately, andhaven't been checking the agent lately, and a way to get an email or something pushed out to me where I will see it would help. Maybe not a common enough problem to warrant the time to set it up [Edit 1 times, last edit by joatmon at May 12, 2005 6:50:55 PM] |

5. Adjustable max processor load - Prevent CPU/Chipset overheating, mostly with notebooks. It runs one thread on my P4 machine at almost 100% and the other at 10%. This causes the fan to come on full blast after a few seconds making my quiet machine quite lould. I guess I'll have to remove this program again, wait another few months, and see if someone fixes the problem and then reinstall it once more. Shame really, as I'd like to contribute to the project. Kind Regards, Shane Cook. |

Hello Shane,
Evidently you did not read the post in Member News about the new throttle feature added on 7 May 2005: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=2684 mycrofth |

This is what it is supposed to do. We are using the CPU cycles that your machine normally wastes and using them, effectively running your CPU at 100% while the program is running.
----------------------------------------This is covered as on our FAQ: CPU Usage The P4 anomoly (seeing 1 "CPU" running at 100% and the other "CPU" basically idle) has been discussed in depth here in the forums. Basically, the information in the Windows Task Manager is just plain incorrect. It's not really Windows' fault, it's the way Intel is tricking the OS into believing you actually have 2 CPUs. Nevertheless, your CPU is running at 100% regardless of what the Task Manager tells you. If the heat or fan noise is really a problem for you, there are a couple of options: * create a profile and have the agent run only during certain hours (e.g. nighttime while you are sleeping). * The latest version of Rosetta has a rough CPU throttle. You can use that to lessen the amount of CPU time Rosetta will take. Not that using this feature will slow down your computations quite a bit as it's not a linear tradeoff. More info on the CPU throttle feature can be found in the Community Maintained FAQs: World Community Grid CPU Throttle Feature

33. WCG Agent for Linux, MAC, Solaris, etc not everyine runs windows Answered here: Software FAQ. 34. Delete or reuse a device if you reinstall the software on a PC, you have to create a new device, even if it's the same name, and there's no way to either delete the previous one or reuse it on re-install I'm not 100% certain, but I believe this is currently a limitation of the UD software. Any ETA on linux client? |
