35. Special title for project staff in forums When a member of the project staff responds in the forums, they are given the same post count derived title as general members (1-19=stranger, 20-49=newbie, 50-?=member, etc) If they had special titles such as moderator, admin, staff, etc, then when they posted a reply, it could be identified as a post from the project staff. Perhaps there are many such posts in the forums, but we can't tell who is providing an official response and who is a peer.

OK, there is a way to run the client as a service or on the second processor but does anybody know a way to check the progress of the task (since there is no icon in the task bar)?
May be it is easy for the guys from WCG to write a little program which can do this? |

37) When you click on my statistics or any other link to this site from the client it just claims an already open Explorer instance, taking me from a page i was looking at. Can you make it open it's own instance?

38) The World Community Grid Agent Help File needs to include 2 topics that are really part of the OS.
A) It needs to explain how to hide (and recover) the Grid Agent Icon in the Task Bar. http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=764 B) It needs to explain how to select/unselect screen savers (and point out that screen savers are NOT a requirement to run the Agent). http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=712 39) A project specific change for the Human Proteome Folding Project should be a link to information on the web site about the protein image showing in the Application View and the screen saver which should, in addition to the current information defining the colors used, emphasize that it is a REAL representation. The link should be either on the Application View (most appropriate) or in the Primary Task Information screen (probably easiest). |

Thinking over my suggestion 39, I realize that the current ‘Learn about this Project’ line on the Grid Agent is all that is needed – IF the section of the FAQs that it goes to is updated with a list of links to additional detailed information about the Application View and the Screen Saver, since these topics draw so many queries.
Some additional information is required in the Software Requirements page. Instead of just saying Virtual Memory must be enabled, it should specify the 300 MB that Rosetta takes. We had a query from one man who had specified a fixed 256 MB page file on his Windows 98 system. This is application specific, so some additional rethinking on how to display this will be required in the future, but right now a quick edit on one line of the Software Requirements is all that is needed. More application specific information should be given explaining just which processes are going to show up on Task Manager so that paranoid System Managers will have an official list to check against. Since people are going to be interested in the information displayed on the Grid Agent, we need a section in the FAQs that explains all this, particularly the diagnostic test assigning a Processor score, with some discussion of the way CPU Time is computed, which explains the logic behind the diagnostic test. And of course, some discussion of Storage is called for, since people keep trying to allocate 10GB !! [In general, we need some Bold Face warnings about too little or too much storage allocated. Some of these warnings should be repeated in the System Requirements page.] This could lead into more discussion of CPU Usage as displayed by Task Monitor, with a special paragraph on Pentium 4 Hyperthreading and 50% Usage, but also a sentence tossed in to cover multi-processor systems. This entry in Software Features – Software FAQs needs more information about file permissions. “ How do I set up my system so that the agent starts for several or all of the users that log in? You can place the World Community Grid icon into each of the user's startup folders (in Start Menu->Programs->Startup), which will make the agent start whenever those particular users log on. You can also place it in the startup folder for "All users" which should make it run for everyone. One way to get to these folders is via: My Computer -> Local disk C: -> Documents and Settings -> All Users -> Start Menu -> Programs -> Startup, for example. “ If the installation program is downloaded and run from My Computer \ Shared Documents does it install there so that All Users have file permission? Viktors made an important post explaining how the Work Units are designed to work in this thread: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=783 So this information should be added somewhere in the FAQs about the Human Proteome Folding Project. This answers a number of repeated queries. Finally, I want to say nice things about the changes being made in the Forum by adding Official Titles to people who are making responses to queries. However, a lot of these responses are going to be missed by people who do not laboriously read through all the threads. To get the biggest bang for a buck, there should be some posts in the Start Here: Community-maintained FAQs forum. For example, a much edited daily blog to which Grid officials could append their answers to common queries. A simple paste of their posts here could keep everybody reassured that all was well and answer questions once (or a few times until the answer was really clear and complete). |

Definitely one of the most valuable features would be allowing multiproc machines to utilize all (or a bitmask of all) the CPUs.
I run the tool on a 8 proc machine but stopped just because it's worthless... Now that dual- or more proc machines are getting more and more popular there will be increasing demand for such feature. |

Just in case it hasn't been already mentioned:
The fastest "device" on our team belongs to my wife; I will do better at gaining her cooperation if the "agent" can run withoug pre-empting the screensaver - she would much prefer to see her family pictures flash across the screen. Many thanks (I'm writing this under her username.) Regards, hubby |
