I think I speak for everyone when I ask for an update on the networking side of things. What is missing for WCG to have a functional website and BOINC download/upload service?

See this post by Christian (cubes) in the "2022-09-15 Update (Networking & Workunits)" News thread. Lots of interesting details (at last)... Cheers - Al. Unfortunately, it has been crickets since, but the site problems came back... Ralf [Edit 1 times, last edit by TPCBF at Oct 6, 2022 4:31:50 PM] |

Even babysitting is not working anymore, so bad is the situation right now. Several of my 126 cores are running dry in a few hours, because no new WU's are able to download, even after hitting Retry hundreds of times the last few hours.
And of course, no communication AT ALL about when this problems will be fixed.... |

It's so bad that I don't touch the retry button anymore and continue on other projects and that after being on standby for 345 days. I've been wondering why for a long time? why can't they get it done in that data center. after so long am a layman in this field, but there are others who should know |

I have implemented a script that which retries the connections every 20 seconds.
This seems to help somewhat with downloading work units. They are still very, very slow, but it is progressing better than manually hitting retry every few minutes. This seems to be the only usable way to prevent my computers from running out if work. |

Not to sound like a broken record, but I don't think WCG is run by Krembil IT but 100% by Jurisica Lab, which is just one research lab at Krembil, and they probably have to fight for IT resources from the larger organization.
----------------------------------------I say this in frustration, since we were told that Krembil/UHN is the largest university-based research institution in North America, but I've seen labs with more dedicated full-time system admins and database admins and network admins. So this likely just seems like they bit off more than they can chew and simply do not have complete buy-in from Krembil IT as a whole. With due respect to Cyclops (I feel your pain!), why weren't those dollars used on a system administrator than a "communications intern"? Edited to Add: I put this post in the wrong update thread. Oops.

Some clarification from either DR. Jurisica's Lab or Krembil would put this matter to rest. Cheers

OK, this has gone completely off the rails.
I blame IBM. If you had a beloved dog or cat that you couldn't care for anymore, you would find a good loving home for that pet. You wouldn't just give that pet to someone that might abuse/neglect that animal. IBM pulled out of WCG for business reasons. Fail enough. But it was their responsibility to find a good home for WCG. They didn't Krembil/Jurisica Lab are WAY in over their heads. They don't have the budget, equipment, nor expertise. What amazes me is that the "projects" stay with WCG when they could go to other BOINC sites. Admit it, this site is dead. Pull the plug and bury it. |
